What you need to know about Running

Running is the world’s most accessible sport. Park runs, colour runs, 5k, 10k, half marathons, marathons and ultras — all you need is a pair of trainers and off you go. Running events are hugely popular on Let’s Do This and it’s a sociable sport, so get some friends involved and achieve something extraordinary.

If you’re starting small, the 5k and 10k events are great fun and definitely worth doing even if you’re training for a bigger challenge further down the line. Getting used to the atmosphere of an event is important. You’re so much more likely to hit a better time if there’s a crowd cheering you on, people in fancy dress and a big celebration at the finish line.

On the go since 2004, the Mens 10K Glasgow has firmly set itself as THE run for men in the west. The life expectancy of a man in Scotland is, shockingly, still the lowest in Europe and three years less than in England and Wales.

Suicide, in addition to other mental health problems, continues to be an issue of high significance to men in Scotland. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people (18-34) in Scotland and almost three out of four suicides are by men. Our aim is to help change this, little by little and the Mens 10K is how we are doing it!

Starting and finishing at Staveley Recreation Ground (LA8 9LN), the 5km Kentmere Sport Trail, 10km Kentmere Trail Run, 17km Kentmere Trail Race and 17km Kentmere Trail Challenge courses follow well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of most of the southern Lakeland fells. The trail climbs out from Staveley above the Kentmere valley, before returning along the valley itself past idyllic tarns and through ancient woodland, climbing Reston Scar before the descent back into Staveley village. Underfoot conditions are quite variable and there's a bit of everything! Short sections of tarmac, grassy footpaths, stony bridleways with some stiles to climb over near the end, all add to the unique nature of the event.

A carnival atmosphere is guaranteed for both spectators and competitors, with live music, race commentary, food and drink all available at the start and finish. So, whether you're new to trail running, an experienced athlete, or simply looking for an unforgettable day out in the Lake District, a family-friendly, festival atmosphere and some amazing trail running awaits you!

The SILVA GL3D is an adventurous three-day mountain marathon with a unique, relaxed and friendly atmosphere that attracts both runners and long-distance walkers. Over the years the event has built up a dedicated following of participants who enjoy the challenge of three long, consecutive days in the hills.

Participants can choose from either the Expert, Wainwright, or Caf course. Participants simply enter the event, and then choose whichever course they prefer on the day e.g. Wainwright for all three days, Wainwright then Caf on day 2, or any mix-and-match combination. All participants still share the same overnight camp. The Caf Course is specifically aimed at experienced walkers and slower runners.

Rather than complex navigation, the emphasis is on long mountain journeys, spectacular scenery and enjoying an amazing mountain experience. Participants should expect mostly mountain trails and footpaths, along ridges and through valleys, rather than contouring and bogs. We start and finish in the same location just three days apart! So that participants can get maximum enjoyment, we transport their overnight equipment between each camp.

Participants should be prepared for 6 to 12 hours on the hill each day, be competent mountain runners or walkers with the ability to navigate and be totally self-reliant. The first day is generally a little longer and the last day a little shorter. The friendly nature of the SILVA GL3D means that many solo participants join into informal groups to share each day on the hill. Although some participants race, there are no prizes, just the respect of your peers for finishing!

The relaxed atmosphere of the event is best summed up in the flexible starting arrangements; each morning participants simply pack up their kit (which is then transported) and set off between 0700 and 0900. The faster participants start last, whilst the slower participants start earlier. Free hot water is available both mornings and evenings and a complimentary cake (or hot drink), or optional beer, at the end of each day's running... it is usually well deserved!

Keswick Half Marathon is said to be one of the most scenic half marathons in the country. The challenging course takes you around Derwentwater with an extra loop into the Newlands valley.

The race was set up by Keswick Rugby Club in order to raise funds for the club and the youth coaching program. We are one of only a handful of small clubs in the country to have a full-time rugby development officer who spends the majority of his time in the local schools. The half marathon is one of the events that help to fund this coaching program so your support is greatly appreciated.

Come and take part in this very popular annual event. The route is a circuit of Derwentwater, with a loop into the Newlands valley, probably the most scenic 13 miles 192.5 yards in the country.
