    About the event
    From the organiser

Located only six miles from downtown Salinas near the town of Monterey, Toro Park is a vast, sprawling venue covering almost 5,000 acres. With punishing hills, fields and prairies as well as many picturesque wooded areas, its easy to understand why this venue is a favourite amongst Spartans.

This courses terrain is so diverse that it was initially a Beast in the early days of Spartan Race, but it packs enough punch to easily host a gruelling Super. With miles of different trail routes, the race directors will be sure to take full advantage of variety and unleash a hailstorm of twists and turns.

The magnificent views from on top of the many peaks are worthy of a quick rest to appreciate the stunning sight of the outlying Northern California. The weather can be deceptively warm without humidity, so remember to hydrate well for the dry and dusty peaks. Be sure to look out for the local wildlife as Toro Park is teeming with critters watching you sprint to the next obstacle.

This was a great race. It was my first marathon and everything went really well. There's no big hills, but be prepared for long inclines. Things I liked:
The start and finish are at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. You finish on the beach next to the boardwalk. Since the finish was on the beach, my wife and son had something to do while waiting for me, plus the quick dip in the ocean was just the ice bath I needed. You have ocean views through most of the race. There's plenty of affordable hotels in the area. Things that could have been better:
There was a lack of real food at the aid stations. There was water, Gatorade, and gels. It's a road race but there were a few miles on a dirt trail.

Where do I start? I've been lucky to run over 100 road marathons, and Big Sur is the most beautiful and magical! I participated in the Boston to Big Sur in 2014, 2 marathons 6 days apart. I had a tough time after Boston 2013, as I was headed to the finish line on Boylston St. when the bombs went off, so 2014 was still emotional and sad for me. Big Sur was therapeutic and made me enjoy finish lines again, so I had to return and enjoy the mesmerizing location.
I made my own challenge, 3 marathons in 2 weeks, as I don't participate at Boston anymore. I ran 2 marathons before heading to Ca. I wanted Big Sur to be the final prize, and it didn't disappoint.

I arrived at Midnight Friday ( 3am EST), but I was so excited and couldn't sleep. I went to the 7am shake-out run with the Treadmill running store, and the Champ Adam Roach. It was so much fun, I just wanted to keep running.
I then volunteered working at the Expo for 4 hours, meeting wonderful people.Sunday we got up at 3am, to get the 4:00am bus to the start. The energy was amazing and energetic! The weather was perfect! So much support out on the course, and the most beautiful views in the U.S.! Amazing volunteers at the aid stations, drumming, Bixby Bridge and the piano player. I didn't want to get off the course. I mean, what hills? You don't even realize it, since your so distracted by the views and happy energy everywhere.Finish line/Post Party: So much fun! Goodie bag as you cross, then hot soup, beer, massages, and more.EVERYONE who runs need to participate in this epic event! There's a distance for everyone. Oh, I wish I could attend every year. So magicalI highly recommend this race to all! Bring the family and friends. So much to do in the area.
    • Did the event in 2018

Big Sur offers the marathon it is most known for as well as a 21 miler, marathon relay, 11 miler, 12K and 5k. Entry into the marathon is done by lottery whereas the other events fill up on a first come, first serve basis.
Communication from the race is just enough- every few weeks with all need to know information. Just before the race, they send out a very detailed participant guide answering any lingering questions runners may have.
      Bib Pickup-
Bibs were picked up in the Monterey Conference Center. Runners were sent a QR code by email and that plus a picture ID were all that was needed to pick up your bib. When I went on Saturday, there were little to no lines. Then you went and picked up your bus ticket for race morning transportation before heading downstairs to pick up your goodie bag and race shirt. Again, there was no line and all the volunteers were super friendly.
      Expo-
The expo was mid-sized with a few vendors, largest being the merchandise for the Big Sur Marathon followed by Hoka One One. The race merchandise booth dented my wallet pretty good. There were also numerous large canvases which presented good photo opportunities if you were willing to wait in a short line.
      Race morning-
As the course is on Highway 1 and they close it to cars, you have to be bussed to the start unless you happen to be staying in Big Sur. My ticket said arrive by 4 and leave by 4:15 but we didn’t even board the buses until after 4:30. Then it’s a drive to the start, if you get car sick, take a Dramamine. Once we arrive and unload, it’s still a bit of a walk to the starting area where we dropped off our gear bags and lined up to start. There were plenty of port-a-potties scattered around.
      The course-
The marathon route starts at Big Sur Station and winds North along Highway 1 to Carmel. It takes you between the trees and along the ocean. The views are awesome but you will work for them. There are hills throughout this course, the most significant being the one from mile 10 to mile 12. I am weird though and didn’t mind the majority of the hills-Mile 8 and the beast from 10-12 not included- I almost rated the elevation a 3 but realized that most people wouldn't consider 2200 ft of gain a 3.
Musicians/ DJ’s are sprinkled throughout the course as well giving runners something else to look forward to. Most notable would be the man playing the grand piano just after crossing the Bixby Bridge at mile 13.1.
There were 11 aid stations along the course with water and Gatorade Endurance. After mile 10, most had fresh fruit as well and 2 stations had Gu’s. Towards the end, one station was offering fresh cut strawberries like BSIM events usually do. Most stations also usually had Vaseline and basic medical supplies if needed. Overall- This race was awesome. Every mile brings you something new to see and the views are amazing. Even on an overcast day like it was for me. Race day wasn’t my day, I ended up contending with some major back pain for the last 10 miles but it was all worth it crossing that finish line. Big Sur is definitely a race for your bucket list and one I will try to do again.

Everything you've ever heard about Big Sur is true. It's absolutely stunning. You'll likely not find views like this anywhere else in the country in a marathon. Picturesque. That said, the course is difficult. Big hills. Long hills. Tall climbs. From mile 9.8 to mile 12.2 you'll go up over 500 feet. The second half of the race is rolling hills that are likely bigger than most people can train on.The race is a lot of fun though. The organizers do a great job of putting entertainment on the course, and the few fans that have access to the course are extremely friendly and supportive. And the strawberry lady at mile 23 has the best tasting strawberries ever.
