Newcastle's iconic Australia Day harbour swim will return next year after the management team gained approval to run the event. There were fears the trans-harbour swim would never return after our club was forced to cancel it in January last year due to safety concerns and increased marine activity.
Club president Callan Nickerson said the swim had been running for 24 years and had only been cancelled twice. Its a really uniquely Newcastle event and we wanted to ensure it had a future, he said.
The swim is great way to kick off your Australia Day and not something that we wanted to lose. You dont get to swim across the worlds biggest coal port every day.Up to 400 swimmers from across NSW and Queensland are expected to compete in the ocean swim on January 26.
The Port to Port takes place over four days in New South Wales from Thursday 23 May to Sunday 26 May 2019. Racing in wave start format there are challenging climbs, thrilling descents and all the best single track we could find in the area, combined with some spectacular scenery.
Last year saw many improvements that riders loved and for 2019 were keeping the same stages but adding new trails and tweaks to make your ride even more epic. Our awesome course team have been busy out on the trails putting together new alignments, lots more single track, a little less climbing and basically more of what you love!
The race is suitable to riders of all levels with a decent level of fitness. Theres an awesome social atmosphere at the end of each stage and at the end of each day you get to kick back and enjoy the excellent food, local beers, wine and everything the region has to offer.
