Fitz’s Challenge, one of Australia’s toughest hill climbing events, returns on Sunday 28 October 2018 to the picturesque Brindabella Ranges in the ACT.

This legendary Pedal Power ACT event offers five epic hill rides – 50 km, 105 km, 165 km, 210 km and 255 km – with something to challenge every rider, from the eager novice to the seasoned climber.

Whether it’s the 50 km Tidbinbilla Challenge with 880 m of climbing or the 5000 m climb of the gruelling 255 km Fitz’s Extreme: prepare to be challenged like never before.

50 km Tidbinbilla Challenge

•    3.5 hour target time
•    880 metres of climbing
•    Grades are up to 12%
•    Participants will be electronically timed

105 km Tharwa Challenge

•    7 hour target time
•    1660 metres of climbing
•    Grades are up to 12%
•    Participants will be electronically timed

165 km Fitz’s Classic

•    11 hour target time
•    2940 metres of climbing
•    Grades are over 12%

Event Details

Raceday Logistics

All rides start and finish at the event hub at Stromlo Forest Park, Opperman Ave Stromlo.

Start times are as follows:

6:00 am – 255 km Fitz’s Extreme
6:00 am – 210 km Fitz’s Epic
7:30 am – 165 km Fitz’s Classic
8:30 am – 105 km Tharwa Challenge
9:00 am – 50 km Tidbinbilla Challenge

All riders must attend a rider briefing ten minutes prior to the start of their ride.

FAQs

Inclusions

Pedal Power ACT will provide you with the following support:

  • Water and nutrition at checkpoints
  • Support vehicles patrolling the courses to assist with repairs (no private support vehicles are permitted)
  • Police presence and motorbikes on patrol on the course
  • Ambulance/first aid on stand-by
  • Emergency phone number of event organisers
  • Signage to provide direction on courses
  • Toilets located at checkpoints
  • Lunch for cyclists riding the 165 km, 210 km and 255 km

As a rider, it is your responsibility to be self-sufficient while participating in this event. You should be capable of performing a basic repair and have sufficient water and nutrition to complete your chosen distance.

Mobile phone coverage is limited on the course. There will be a police presence with motorcycle patrols as well as roaming support vehicles along the course to assist participants if required.

Any human-powered cycle that is legal to be ridden on ACT roads can be ridden in the event. This includes two-wheelers, recumbents, tandems, tricycles, unicycles, kick bikes, three-wheeled racing wheelchairs (for riders with disabilities) and electric power-assisted pedal-cycles (pedalecs).

Tandems with a pilot and stoker are charged a single entry fee, although both riders must register. The second rider can complete their entry form in person on Saturday 27 or Sunday 28 prior to collecting their rider pack.

Fitz’s Challenge is an inclusive cycling event and open to riders 12 years and over. Riders under the age of 18 years are required to be accompanied by an adult.

Rider Packs

Rider packs can be collected the day before the event or on the day of the event:

  • Saturday 27 October from 2 – 6 pm at Abode Hotel Woden, 10 Bowes St, Woden.
  • Sunday 28 October (event day) at the event hub at Stromlo Forest Park, Opperman Ave, Stromlo, before the start of your ride.

All riders must bring their helmet when they collect their rider pack and have it checked for an Australian Standard sticker.
