Between February and October, there are five Grand Slam Challenge rides throughout the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, and Fleurieu Peninsula as part of the Grand Slam Challenge Series. Participants can ride in one, two, three, four or all five of the rides. Each ride combines two different loops of between 40km and 80km, all starting and finishing in the one location. There is also a Mini Slam for those looking for something a little less challenging, in which participants complete only one of the two loops.

Build up your fitness and increase your endurance throughout the year to complete the ultimate Grand Slam Challenge in October, or join us for one or two rides of the year. Meet new people, or meet up with old buddies, the Grand Slam Challenge rides are as much about the challenge as they are about the people you meet.

There are several opportunities for volunteering throughout the year. Whether you are interested in gaining administration experience in our front office or working on single and multi-day events in roles ranging from ride or traffic marshals, managing refreshment stations, providing logistics support, driving support vehicles or one of many other roles, we have something for you.

Please visit the official event website to download a volunteer application form.

What time do I need to register by on the day?
At the start location/registration desk collect your Grandslam Rider ID which needs to be attached to your shirt or your bike. This will enable you to access the refreshment stops and then needs to be handed back at the finish so we know that you have finished your Grand Slam/Mini Slam ride. Registration opens from 7am (or from 5.30am for GS#5). For Mini Slam riders - you can select to ride Loop 2 and have a later start time of 10.00am (no later than 10.30am) should you wish to have a sleep in!

I have registered for the Mini Slam but would like to ride the Grand Slam?
No problems! You can choose to ride both loops or just one depending on how you are feeling, etc. The ride is the same price for 1 loop or 2. No need to let us know beforehand. Please advise us when you register on the day what distance you wish to ride/have ridden

Where is the pre-registration?
The start locations in each town will be signposted as you drive in. Plenty of parking is usually available. Just allow yourself time to park/gear up and pre-register by 7.45am for the Rider Briefing (or 6.15am for GS#5)

What sort of food/drinks are included?
Refreshment stops are normally midway on each loop. You will see signs pre-warning you of the stop. Here you can enjoy a tea/coffee or water/hydration product/fruit juice - biscuits and fruitcake/bananas to refuel! Lunch is available after Loop 1. You can make your own roll - plenty of fillings to choose from! And the famous apple slice will all help you recharge after your Loop 1 or before you challenge yourself further on Loop 2. There are vegetarian and gluten free options available - just indicate this on your registration form.

What if I have mechanical problems?
Pull your bike to the side of the road/turn it upside down and call one of the support mobile numbers listed on your route sheet/map. There are ride marshals who may be able to assist or the support vehicle can collect you and your bike should you be unable to finish. Please note: we recommend that you carry at least a small tool kit with spare tube/tyre patches and you know how to use them. Please refer to the 'Be Prepared' resource for more information on how to making sure that both you and your bicycle are in top condition for the ride.

Are the roads closed?
No - the Grand/Mini Slam series is an open road event. You will be sharing the road with traffic - so usual SA Road rules apply including riding no more than two abreast and then only when safe to do so. Otherwise ride single file, particularly on narrow and winding roads. Be aware of your position on the road and how visible you are to traffic - both oncoming and approaching from the rear.
The route is clearly marked with Bicycle SA red arrows which are easy to follow. Copies of the map and route notes are available at registration and in the interests of your safety, please take a copy with you.
Be rider aware and warn your fellow riders that you are overtaking - a simple comment "Passing" is recommended. Please do not litter - take your rubbish home with you!

Do I need to let you know when I have finished or if I withdraw during the ride?
Yes! So we know not to send out a search party for you, please sign back in when you return from each loop. This will enable us to keep track of how many riders are out on the circuit and help ensure everyone has returned safely. If you decide to withdraw part-way through the ride and go directly home or have someone collect you, please call the telephone number for the Grandslam Base which will be printed at the bottom of the route notes.

An 80km ride through undulating countryside gaining about 900m over the distance. Participants were well supported by signage, refreshment stops every 20km and contact details in case of mechanical breakdown or other incidents.

Very enjoyable ride in the hills. Well organised and friendly people all keeping active.Look forward to the coast to coast.Happy cycling.
  • Did the 100km in 2019

I had a really good time I thought it was a great easygoing atmosphere, well organized. I did it by myself though and although that was a bit daunting for a first timer everything was so well organized it didnt matter.

I'm so impressed with the level or organization and the effort made by the volunteers to organize the course and the refreshments stops. This was a great course, nice mix of hills and plenty of shade. The baby goats were super cute too!

The event organisation was great as always by bikeSA.Personally, I felt that I could do the first round no probs, but didnt take into account my lack of regular training. I should have stopped at 1 loop, but went on to do two. Felt like giving up at 20 kays to go, but persisted. In the end felt a great sense of achievement, but did feel the pain with some cramps in the legs.A great, and brilliantly organized ride, dont underestimate the challenge, and remember to check in after the first loop if youre doing two. Highly recommended!
