About 10k events in New South Wales

5ks and 10ks are great entry level events and also hugely popular within the wider running community. 10ks serve as excellent warm-up events for the longer formats too. And again, like the 5k, you'll find a 10k race at most large scale running festivals like the Sydney Running Festival. These running festivals create an amazing atmosphere with lots of runners, music and spectators, and they're family friendly too.

What are the best 10k events?

The largest event in this category is the Sun Herald City2Surf in Sydney, which last year attracted over 80,000 participants. However, it's technically 14k, taking you from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach, but we just couldn't leave this one out. However, if that extra 4k is a stretch too far, then the City2City events are definitely an even 10 kilometres, we promise.

How long will it take to run 10k?

For the casual but regular runner, finishing within an hour is pretty decent. Newbies should allow themselves a little more leeway, set yourself realistic targets and remember to enjoy yourself during the race. That said, if you're interested, the men's and women's world records (for road racing) stand at 26m44s and 29m43s respectively, held by Leonard Patrick Komon and Joyciline Jepkosgei (who also holds the record for the women's half marathon) - these are ridiculously fast times, hats off to anyone who can get within 10 minutes of this!

How do you train for a 10k race?

We've built a 6 week training plan to get you up to speed. Set your training goals with reference to your current fitness and running experience. Challenge yourself, and have fun with it. But if you're finding it too easy and want to push yourself, why not check out our half marathon and marathon event calendars.
