About Half Marathons in New South Wales
Half marathons (13.1 miles) are among the most popular running events in NSW. NSW has it's fair share of standalone half marathons, and there are some great running festivals, like the Sydney Running Festival and Newcastle Running Festival, with bands and cheering crowds. Then smaller events such as Port Macquarie Running Festival, where the half marathon is the main event.
If you've run a few of these events and are feeling pretty comfortable, check out the marathons in New South Wales, or if you feel you need some practice then 10k runs could be the ideal event.
What are the best half marathons?
It's worth noting that these events are very popular and sell out very quickly, or require ballot entry so get your name in fast. The SMH Half has a cap of 10,500 participants and applications usually close a couple of weeks before race day. On the other hand, if NSW just isn't enough and you're looking to travel the world, take a look at our pick of the World's Top 12 Half Marathons and see where it takes you.
How far is a half marathon?
A half marathon is, you guessed it, half the length of a marathon at 13.1 miles. The average Aussie man can expect to finish in 1h51m, and 2h05m for women, which is a lot faster than the global average. If you're wondering how you might fare against the worlds best: the men's world record for a half marathon is held by Kenyan Abraham Kiptum at a scorching 58m18s, and the women's record is a blistering 64m51s, set by Joyciline Jepkosgei, also from Kenya. Both set at the apparently super speedy Valencia Half Marathon in Spain.
How long do I need to train for a half marathon?
Generally speaking, 8 weeks is enough to train yourself up to half marathon fitness. The best way to ensure you do this efficiently is to follow a training plan. This will help you to build gradually, and also remind you to taper off just before the race, so you're fresh. If you want to add some real motivation to your training, ask a friend along, no more snoozing that alarm!
