About Half Marathons in Australia
You'll find that most major cities will host a big half marathon at least once a year. You'll also find lots of smaller events organised by local running clubs and race directors in various parks across the country. What are the best half marathons?
Aside from the festivals, there are one or two famous standalone events too, the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon being the largest example. The SMH Half has a cap of 10,500 participants and applications close weeks before the event begins, so you'll have to be on the ball if you want to enter. How far is a half marathon?
A half marathon is 13.1 miles or 21.1 km long, exactly half the length of a marathon. The average half marathon finish time across Australia over the last few years is about 1h51m for men, and 2h05m for women, which is a lot faster than the global average. Yes Straya. If you're wondering how this fares against the worlds best: the men's world record for a half marathon is 58m18s, and is held by Kenyan Abraham Kiptum and the women's record is 64m51s, set by Joyciline Jepkosgei, also from Kenya. The records were set at the Copenhagen Half Marathon in Denmark and the Valencia Half Marathon in Spain respectively.
How long do I need to train for a half marathon?
Training for any long-distance event takes time, and you should make sure you build up your training gradually to avoid injury. If you're starting from a position where you're not running regularly, you might want 12 weeks of dedicated training in the run up to your half marathon. If you are already in the habit of running, and 8 week plan might be appropriate, and experienced runners may only require 6 weeks to get race ready. Check out our 8 week training plan.
