  • Did the 50 Km in 2018

Convicts & Wenches is a beautiful and scenic run never straying far from the coast line. The scenery of isolated beaches, rugged headlands and breathtaking ocean views keep you engaged from start to finish. There is not a dull moment and it is difficult to say with certainty which part of the course is my favourite. I have ran this race for the past 7 years (5x 50km and 2x 25km) and I keep coming back for more.
  • Did the 12 Km in 2018

My fellow wenches & I had the best day out!! We are still talking about how its one of our favourite events!! Beautiful scenery, well organised, great photography! & a fantastic atmosphere, already registered for next year with an idea to top our costumes this year

  • Did the 50 Km in 2018

To me one of the best longer races for either someone starting out in Ultra Marathons or experienced runners trying for faster times. 6.25KM Laps are pretty much ideal as with aid stations on course really all you (or your crew) need is one spot for your specific needs. Running on paths with no cross roads or driveways (around a park) means you only have to concentrate on your own running. With a number of different events lots of people out there whether that be to chat with or race against so the laps don't seem as many. Very flat course, tiny bit of undulation is enough to just vary your stride which is helpful i find.
  • Did the Supermarathon in 2017

Its run on a dead flat 6.25km course so if you're after a fast time its ideal.Good for your crew. They just sit in Runnaway bay stadium put their ft up and wait for you to come through

  • Did the 325k in 2018

Perfect course for runners stepping up to greater distances due to the water station close proximity , aid station and support crew every 25kms. This really sets up for a solid foundation to make sure you finish well. Bonus is its really well makes and pretty much impossible to take a wrong turn
  • Did the 325k in 2018

I had never used poles before this race but I'm glad I brought them along. The first couple loops seem fine without them but in time you will wish you had them. Helpful hint would be to bring your bat and balls and be ready to play.

  • Did the event in 2016

I participated in the Great Ocean Road Half Marathon in 2016. The Half Marathon for this event is 23km as this is the distance from Kennett River to Apollo Bay. The Marathon event is 44km, so be prepared to run an extra couple kilometres! Also the event has a bit of elevation due to the undulating nature of the great ocean road, the view is more than worth the hills!Pros:
*The Scenery! I'd argue this event has the best scenery out of any event in Australia. I loved running around each bend and seeing a panoramic ocean view!*The Buses - The buses provided to get you to your respective start lines are an absolute godsend, they are extremely well organised and take the stress out of parking.*T-Shirts/SWAG - Both the T-shirt and Medal provided for the event are amazing quality. The t-shirt is Mizuno branded and is of a high quality.*Expo - I enjoyed the expo setup for this event, it felt like a sunday market set up just for runners. It product range was a bit limited, but it was nice all the same.*Race Management - This event is well organised and it shows. The weekend is full of various running events, and it's great that there are options for the whole family.Cons:
*Aid Stations - The aid stations themselves are well stocked and the volunteers are brilliant, however there seemed to be a missing aid station in the Half Marathon. It did throw me out a little bit, so just something to keep in mind in preparation.*Race Photos- I hate to be nit-picky but I was a little bit disappointed with my race photos. An event on the Great Ocean Road Marathon feels like a prime opportunity to get an awesome race photo with the amazing ocean view in the background. Unfortunately all my photos seemed to have been taken at the finish line so I didn't end up with the photo I was hoping for. Ah well there's always next year! :)Overall the Great Ocean Road Half Marathon is an amazing event. I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone!
  • Did the event in 2015

    Registration:
Easy, online registration which closed a couple of days prior to the event. There was on-site registration for all events on the Saturday. Expo:
A little different to normal race expos since they mailed the bibs out to Australian residences. All international runners did need to pick up at the Health and Wellness Fair. All exhibitors were outside in the park running alongside the main street in Apollo Bay, and had tents set up from the main sponsors of the weekend (Tom Tom, Mizuno etc.), as well as a huge range of food vendors. Additionally the Apollo Bay Saturday markets were running which allowed access to some amazing locally made produce/goods. Swag:
No swag at all for anything less than the Marathon, the bib gets sent through to you in the weeks prior (if signed up by a certain date). For those competing in the Marathon, there is a “gifts” pickup which looked to be some sponsor products and a Great Ocean Road Marathon shirt. Course:
The course starts and finishes on the main street of Apollo Bay, which is also the finish line for the Marathon and Half Marathon the following day. The 6K is a simple out and back, heading inland rather than following the ocean. It’s certainly an interesting and scenic course as we head away from the beach, and downhill (gotta remember that for the route back!) into open farm fields. The road is well sealed, and closed to traffic both ways. That said, it is unpredictable on the side of the road which can open you up to injury, so it’s best to stay on the road. The course has a turnaround point which utilises a cross street, funnelling runners into this street and past the only water location on course then joining back onto the main street for the remaining 3K. There was one point near the end (with about 200m to go) where the course did get a little confusing but thankfully the traffic marshals were able to lead me on the right track. As you come down to the finishing chute, the course is un-fenced up to 50m before so you do have to be wary of any spectators at the side (or even crossing) as you run down the clock. Once finished you pass over the timing mats (each race is timed) and straight to the medals. The medals look to be the same with the exception of the ribbon and a small inscribe at the bottom mentioning the race distance. There is a water table set up as you exit the runners chute, no food offered for the 6k.

What you need to know about Ultramarathons

An ultramarathon is any running race longer than a traditional marathon of 26.2 miles. Most of them take place on trails, often surrounded by spectacular scenery, and involve continuously stuffing your face to keep your body going mile after mile. At the extreme end, ultras can involve running more than 300km over multiple days through mountains, deserts, jungles and snow. But if this is your first ultra, you might want to start with something a little shorter, like a “gentle” 50km.
