The Aoraki Mount Cook Marathon is a road running event held in early October each year, with the next event taking place on Saturday 5th October 2019 in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand. The event offers challenges for all abilities including a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km and 5km road running events – Something for everyone!

The Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is in the South Island of New Zealand near the towns of Twizel and Lake Tekapo. Aoraki Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain stands 3753 metres above sea level and the Aoraki Mount Cook village lie within the park. The park covers a little over 700 km² with Glaciers covering 40% of the park area, notably the Tasman Glacier on the slopes of Aoraki Mt Cook.

All events in the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park encompass breath-taking scenery – Runners and walkers follow the main Mt Cook Road that meanders its way amongst awe inspiring lake, mountain and glacial landscapes – quite possibly one of the world’s most scenic road marathons!

All events will follow out and back courses starting and finishing at the Mt Cook Lodge in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village. Runners and walkers can look forward to amazing mountain views alongside the shores of Lake Pukaki. You’ll be surprised how different the scenery is running in different directions…

Race Numbers and Race Packs can be collected on Friday 4th October 2019 between 4:00pm – 8:00pm at The Mt Cook Lodge / Chamois Bar & Grill located in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village.

Race items can also be collected on race day at The Mt Cook Lodge / Chamois Bar & Grill, – start line after 7:00am up until 15mins prior to your respective race start time.

If traveling to the event on race day – please allow enough time for travel, park and walk to collect your race items and warm up without rushing… Save your energy for the race!


An optional pre event dinner buffet is available at the The Mt Cook Lodge / Chamois Bar & Grill,in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village between 5:30pm – 8:30pm on Friday 4th October 2019. Additional Tickets for friends and family can also be pre purchased online at the time of registration at a special race rate of $30. Tickets will be contained within participant’s race packs. *(must be purchased at the time of online registration)


Participants are responsible to carry their own food and hydration for the duration of the marathon – however, water and sports beans will be readily available at EIGHT checkpoints located approx every 5KM along the marathon course.


All amenities are available at the Mt Cook Lodge in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village.


The Prize giving will take place approx 2:00 pm on Race Day at the Chamois Bar & Grill / Mt Cook Lodge in the Aoraki Mount Cook Village.


There is a plentiful variety of wholesome food and snacks as well as hot and cold drinks available at the race finish – Mt Cook Lodge / Chamois Bar & Grill, Aoraki Mount Cook Village.


In the unlikely event of an emergency, first aiders will be located around the course and at the START/FINISH. Qualified personnel will be assessing participants during the race to make sure that everyone is in a fit and good physical condition to continue.
