Stage 1: Vineyards to the Mountain, October 2nd

Details: 28.5km, with 2,400m of total elevation gain.

On the Island of Pico, you start at sea level in Madalena at Lajido da Criação Velha in the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture Landscape. From there, you will climb to Portugal's highest point, the Pico Mountain (2351m).

Stage 2: As Fajas, October 3rd

Details: 28.8km, with 1700m total elevation gain (and 2,120m descent)

The island of São Jorge has a spine of volcanoes running through it, and has numerous Fajas, which are flat areas of land between the mountain and the sea, formed by cooling lava. You start near the parish of São Tomé, initially crossing the fajas on the south coast, before climbing to top of Piquinho da Urze (max elevation 711m), before descending towards the north side of the island, through a special conservation area.

Stage 3: Volcanoes Marathon, October 4th

Details: 42.6km, with 1960m total elevation gain (and 2,010m descent)

On the island of Faial, the course takes you from the West to the East coast. Starting on alien terrain by the Capelinhos volcano, Portugal's youngest piece of land. The course covers 10 dormant volcanoes, passes through bridges and tunnels, and finally descends into the city of Horta to the stunning bay.
