What you need to know

Use this year's Beach to Brother trail running event as an excuse to visit the impressive and stunning Mid-North Coast!

The Beach to Brother Marathon is just one of a few distances offered on the long weekend of Sunday 6th October 2019. Also on offer is a Half-Marathon, a 10km Dash, a 5km Fun Run, and a Team Relay Marathon (up to 4 persons). All of these distances are based on the beautiful Mid-North Coast of NSW; they start in various beautiful locations along the marathon course, and all finish atop North Brother Mountain one of the most scenic lookouts on the North Coast, located in Dooragan National Park, Laurieton.

Both the individual and team relay marathon events start at Town Beach, Port Macquarie; the half-marathon starts at Lake Cathie Beach; the 10km run/walk starts at Camden Haven Beach, and the 5km run/walk starts adjacent Laurieton Pool.

The courses have been designed to provide a similar challenge to races such as the Six-Foot Track Marathon, the Coastal Classic, and the Raffertys Resort Run. The four distances all offer a great challenge to runners/walkers of every ability. Other than the 5km run/walk, the runs all encompass beautiful beaches, coastal paths and trails, and as was named by competitors in 2016 the hill from hell at the end! The four distances on offer all provide both mental and physical challenges in amongst some of the most beautiful and scenic coastline the Mid-North Coast has to offer.

Book in for an awesome challenge; bring your friends and family along to compete or spectate; then, relax in paradise!

FAQs

Nutrition and Aid Stations

Aid stations are limited on the course; therefore, it is compulsory that all runners in the marathon, team-relay and half marathon events carry either a bottle or hydration pack with the ability to carry a minimum of 500ml of fluids.  On course checks will take place; individuals identified as not carrying the 500ml of fluids may be disqualified.

October can get quite hot and humid in the Port Macquarie region; therefore, carbohydrate free electrolytes will be provided as the main fluid source on the course.  This will be in the form of Hammer Nutrition Fizz.

In addition to the on-course nutrition, it is strongly advised that runners have a race plan prepared.  If you feel you have a need for a specific brand/flavour/strength of sports nutrition then plan to be self-sufficient to satisfy these needs while also knowing what is available in general along the course to draw upon or supplement as needed.

In addition to the fluids provided at aid-stations, there will also be a limited supply of fruit and snakes/lollies

The Finish Line

The peak of North Brother Mountain only has one narrow and steep-winding road for 5 kilometers and very limited parking on top of the mountain. For the safety of all persons at the finish line, this road (Captain Cook Bicentennial Drive) is closed during the event.

As there is limited parking space atop North Brother Mountain and given the narrow and steep-winding road that provides access in and out, we encourage people using the road to walk against the traffic at all times, and consider using the courtesy shuttle bus.

Courtesy Shuttle Bus

A courtesy shuttle-bus will be provided for competitors, spectators, and general users of the park.  Coaches will be provided to return competitors and spectators from Dooragan National Park back to all start locations. NOTE: there is a cost associated with using the coach, and tickets are required to be purchased.

Team Relay Information

  • The Enriched Health Care Team Relay Marathon provides an opportunity for a minimum of 2 (two) and a maximum of 4 (four) team members to participate in the event.
  • Each person must be 17 (seventeen) or over on the day of the event.  Each person must run at least 1 (one) leg of the event.
  • Runners must decide prior to the event which order they will run.  Runners can run more than 1 (one) leg of the event consecutively.
  • There are opportunities to swap at 5 (five) checkpoints, approximately 8km, 12km, 21km, 32km and 37km.
  • Only 1 (one) person can complete any leg of the event at any one time, including the final stage up North Brother Mountain.

Rules & Conditions

  • Runners must carry a water bottle or hydration pack (or similar), with a minimum capacity of 500ml, to refill at aid-stations.  To be environmentally friendly, no cups will be provided at the aid stations.
  • All runners for the Marathon, Team Relay Marathon, and the Half marathon must be 17 (seventeen) years or over on race day.Runners from the age of 9 (nine) can compete in the 10km Run/Walk.  It is compulsory for any runner under the age of 12 (twelve) to be supervised at all times on the course by an adult.Runners from the age of 7 (seven) can compete in the 5km Run/Walk. It is compulsory for any runner under the age of 10 (ten) to be supervised at all times on the course by an adult.
  • Winners will be determined by the fastest time recorded on the MYLAPS timing system.
  • The Race Director’s decision is final.
  • Runners are to show respect for the environment, landowners, local communities, other recreational users, and fellow competitors at all times.  As this course is on public lands and National Parks, recreational users are to be offered right of way at all times.  Failure to comply with this will result in not being allowed to participate in the future events.

  • Did the 10k Dash in 2018

With two knee replacements I was stoked that I did it. It was harder than I thought and I was suffering vertigo but the fact that I finished a(and not last) I couldnt have been happier. The view at the top was amazing and I think everyone did an excellent job organizing it. As I had not done anything like this before and came from Nambucca Heads I was a bit confused as the were to register. I had sent an email a few days before but no one answered it. I just went to the surf club and asked everyone and before long the girl arrived for registration. I wasnt aware you were suppose to register the day before but in the end it was all good. Cheers
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

I was ok with the information provided prior to the race, however I know the area. I did hear of other competitors who were surprised at the intensity of the incline up North Brother Mountain at the end.
  • Did the Marathon in 2018

And also 2017 and 2016.Overall there was improvement in relation to the aide stations and also the trail marking this year. The beach was not very forgiving this year but that's part running in nature. More trail and less beach would be welcome. Increased number of shuttle buses down the mountain would be welcome.
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

No. Info pack was good. A few more detailed maps and elevation charts would be good.
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

Paying good money to enter the event I expected age categories in results. The course was dangerous in parts with no markers on road sides & has potential for a fatal accident. Once again bib numbers should be printed with race number if you enter before closing date (I treasure my race numbers before a prize & it looks trashy in photos for my sponsors).
  • Did the 10k Dash in 2018

    Conserve energy for the mountain.
  • Did the 10k Dash in 2018

There could have been more food options at the top of the mountain. There could have been some watermelon or fruit at the water stations. Maybe organise a food van that does coffee and food for spectators, vollies and competitors at the top of the mountain.
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

The race was awesome, along some of the most beautiful coastline NSW has to offer. The organisers gave enough information to prepare for, including carrying water, but that north brother ouch!!
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

Fantastic event. Train hills though! Love this event, have done twice now and will be back again in 2019.
