Course Details

The half, marathon and ultra for this series is held annually in May and takes place at the Bewl reservoir which is set within 1000 acres of the picturesque Kent and Sussex countryside based in Lamberhurst, Kent. All these trail routes follow the clockwise “round the reservoir route” at the Bewl Water Country Park which is the largest lake in South East England and they run through some lovely forested areas and open countryside trails overlooking the lake which comprises of one lap of this course for the half marathon, two laps for the marathon course, and three laps for the ultra. The course is only undulating on certain sections, whilst the remaining route is run along quiet country back roads.

Raceday Logistics

WHEN WILL I GET MY RACE NUMBER AND CHIP TIMING CHIP?
These will both be provided at registration and your race number will contain your electronic timing device. You will be given an envelope containing the race number and a Tyvek tag correlating to your race number. You can attach the Tyvek tag to your bag when you do your bag drop, though you will need to provide your race number after the race in order to retrieve it, so please hold on to it.

Travel

WILL THERE BE PARKING AND WHAT WILL THIS COST?
The car parking spaces at the Bewl Water Visitor Centre are very reasonably priced for both competitors and spectators, the fee for all-day parking will just be £2.00 per car and there are plenty of car parking spaces available, so please bring change as this is payable at the main entrance to the Visitor Centre.

Kit List

WHAT KIT WILL I NEED ON THE DAY?
This is predominantly a trail run but it includes sections along the roads on quiet country lanes so it is advisable to wear trail shoes as conditions underfoot can be muddy on stretches. I would also advise taking a hydration pack or bottles so you can maintain your electrolyte intake throughout the race and take gels and food to assist you with your race nutrition too. Some areas are quite exposed too so a cap, gloves, and lightweight jacket might come in handy too.

  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

I really like the course itself, around Bewl water. Mostly on a trail, with only a few patches properly wet/slippery, it's a very enjoyable run.I personally liked the absence of distance markers. Disappointed with the food available at checkpoints but that's personal preference.Very disappointed with the finish though. There was barely anything, no celebration and no indication of your time...The start was also a complete shamble, with most runners not knowing where to go after the first mile...
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

Terrible! It was a hard route due to the combination of trail with road, however, the views along the route were great. The GPS tracking shows the route was a mile over the 1/2 marathon distance, the race started 1/2 hour late due to not enough people checking runners in, the course was over crowded but the worst part of the day was getting to the finish line to be told they had run out of medals!
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

The hills are very steep towards the end make sure you train for that. All the hills were right at the end of the course so brace for it.
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

The information before hand was helpful. More info about how narrow and uneven the track is (ruts from bikes, water to cross, thick mud in parts) its more than just looking out for tree roots Id say. Id also describe it as hilly in places not undulating as I think was in the pre race info.

Turn up very early to register as the queues were ridiculous. Best get to the start line in good time too as there's no warning when they start the race or which one they're starting. Road shoes will be fine unless it's been raining a lot before the race.
  • Did the Ultra in 2018

was well informed by the race organiser
  • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

That we would have to queue so long for registration we would have got there earlier.
  • Did the 10K in 2018

I enjoyed the actual run very much, a great course with lovely downhill fnish!
  • Did the 10K in 2018

Start delays due to registration queues foe the 1/2 marathon could have been better organised but overall a good morning. People running ultra and marathon had to avoid other runners and visitors/spectators so maybe better segregation of running and waiting g / walking areas would be advantageous. Will go back in 2019 as fantastic venue.

Hermes are great. A really relaxed and supportive atmosphere. They leverage some nearby air cadets to help with the aid stations which works well!
