Route information
CELTMAN! Extreme Scottish Triathlon
The eighth edition of the CELTMAN! Extreme Scottish Triathlon, part of the Xtri World Tour, will take place on June 15th 2019 in Wester Ross, Scotland.
Centred around the stunning Torridon mountains we will take you on an adventure unlike any other.
Make no mistake - when we say this race is extreme we mean it. Read the race information carefully before entering as you may have to endure cold water, strong winds, driving rain and difficult conditions on the mountain with low visibility.
SWIM 3.4K in cold, deep and jellyfish infested Atlantic waters
BIKE 202K on incredible scenic (and often very windy) Highland roads
RUN 42K through an ancient drover's pass and over the Beinn Eighe mountain range
ASCEND over 4000 Metres during this epic day
Swim 3.4 K in Loch Shieldaig:
Since 2012 the water in Loch Shieldaig has been below the seasonal average. This appears to be an ongoing trend.
The extreme nature of the temperatures led us to shorten the swim course from 3.8K to 3.4K. Even with this shortened distance the athletes suffered badly from the cold.
In 2013 a severe storm added to the drama with strong Southerlys pushing the competitors off course.
We strongly advise cold water training for this race and to wear a heatseeker vest under your wetsuit.
Ride 200K on incredible Highland roads:
The stunning CELTMAN! 200K bike route takes you along some historic single lane roads and wide open highland A roads.
Although we do not have any mountain passes to boast of the route includes 2000 metres of climbing and being coastal is affected greatly by our varied weather.
It is common to find a strong headwind on the last third of the course, just when you thought you could relax!
**
Run 42K over two Munros:**
The CELTMAN! run is unsurpassed for it's challenging nature and beauty.
In Scotland any mountain over 3000 ft (914.4 metres) is classed as a Munro. You will attempt two of these during the race on the Beinn Eighe range.
Spidean Coire nan Clach ('Peak of the Corrie of Stones' in Scottish Gaelic), is the highest point on the main ridge itself. It stands at a height of 993m. You do not go to the absolute summit of this peak due to the technicality of the climb but you go as far as the trig point.
Ruadh-stac Mòr ('Big Red Stack' in Scottish Gaelic) is on one of the spurs off the main ridge of Beinn Eighe and stands at a height of 1,010m.
Weather permitting (it's often cloudy) you will have the most incredible vistas.

FAQs
does that affect my chances in another?
A: World XTRI Tour races don’t share notes – all applications to all the ballots are treated independently and equally (within the bounds of any selection T&C’s each organiser has).
ChevronLeft
What if I get offered a place in more than one race?
A: There’s a period of a few days after we announce the results of the CXTRI and other World XTRI Tour ballots, and before we take payment If you’re lucky enough to be selected for more than one race, you’ll have chance to decline entries during that period (you'll need to email us).

Can I have more than one supporter on the mountain?
A: No, we have a strict policy of only one support runner on the final mountain section. This supporter must also carry the mandatory safety kit and stay with the runner for the duration of this part of the course. This is for safety and tracking reasons. The mountain is dangerous, the weather unpredictable and we do not want to have people on the mountain we cannot account for. This policy will be enforced at the mountain safety checkpoint – T2a.
ChevronLeft
Can I have extra support T-shirts as I have more than one in my support team?
A: No, we issue one supporter T-shirt which is used an access pass to the transition areas. You can of course pass it between different members during the day but only one supporter is allowed in the transitions.
ChevronLeft
Is my showerproof jacket sufficient for the mountain?
A: No, you must have a fully waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, we will not allow you to enter the mountain without this and we will test it at kit check. Is a phone/
ChevronLeft
watch compass OK?
A: No, you must have a manual compass. Phone batteries and GPS signals can fail. It is imperative to have a “proper” compass and be able to use it.
ChevronLeft
Can I bring and carry my own survival bag rather than yours?
A: We would recommend you carry the one we provide, it is lightweight and designed for British conditions. If you have an alternative please talk to the kit-check crew.
ChevronLeft
Can I have a support runner between T2 and T2A?
.
ChevronLeft
Can they be on a bike?
A: Yes you can but they must also carry the mandatory kit. We do not allow bikes on the new run course as some of the trails are not roomy enough.
ChevronLeft
Can I use trekking poles on the mountain?
A: We do not rule against this but remember, it’s extra gear to carry.
ChevronLeft
Do I need a triathlon license?
A: No you do not, because we’re non-sanctioned, there is no personal accident cover for athletes but everyone is covered for 3rd party PLI under the Celtman Ltd. policy.
ChevronLeft
What is the minimum age for support runners?
A: They must be over 16 but please note this is no run in the park, the mountain is a serious environment and your support runner is there to “support” you. We do not want situations where the supporter has to be taken care of by the athlete.
ChevronLeft
Do I have to come to registration at the prescribed times?
A: Yes, it is important to work to our timetable. In exceptional circumstances we can accommodate for you – please contact the organisers if you will have a problem. info@cxtri.
ChevronLeft
comDoes my support runner have to personally bring their kit to the kit check?
.
ChevronLeft
Can I bring it for them and have it checked?
A: We must check both the athlete’s and support runner’s kit. If the supporter cannot make registration then we can check the kit in their absence. Please note the support runner MUST attend the safety briefing.
ChevronLeft
Can you help me sort out accommodation?
A: Unfortunately not, please use one of the many hosting sites available.
ChevronLeft
What are the dates for future races?
A: We do not announce the following year’s date until shortly after the race due to varying factors but as a guide we are usually in mid-late June.
