Event summary

This historical first edition was sold out with 2200 enthusiastic athletes! With its mild climate and 3000 hours of sunshine per year, Portugal has always been the perfect destination for family holidays. Now, these welcoming conditions are part of the IRONMAN 70.3 event series. With a history of over 650 years, Cascais is just a 20 minute drive from Lisbon International Airport and is located between Sintra—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—and the Village of Oeiras. Athletes will experience the best Cascais has to offer, starting with a one loop swim of 1900 meters in front of the Fortaleza da Cidadela, the most spectacular bay in Portugal. With its starting point in Cascais, the single 90,1 km loop cycle course runs alongside the ocean, through to Oeiras, Algés, Belém and returning in Alcântara, a fast and flat part of this beautiful landscape. The course also covers stunning natural scenery in the Sintra forests, returning to Cascais along the Guincho Beach road "where the land ends and the sea begins." The two loops of the 21,1 km run course start in the Hippodrome, taking athletes through Cascais Village, Marginal road and the seaside promenade (Paredão), the perfect inspiration to finish the race. Running between Cascais, Estoril and S. Pedro, competitors will be cooled by sea breezes and cheered on by spectators from the many restaurants. Historic houses, palaces, and fortresses of bygone times over one of the most beautiful race courses ever designed for a triathlon. It's sure to be of the most amazing experiences of an athlete's lifetime.

I enjoyed the race a lot. Personally I found the bike service good but not very well organised: I believe I have spent more time queuing up for the service than the time I employed to complete the race… read more
