The Milne Bay Military Challenge is a charity endurance event which is held once a year in the National Parks of Toowoomba where participants can enjoy the breathtaking views of the Main Range and Lockyer Valley.

The challenge course has been created for those wanting to set the best records, run as an individual, run with family members, university friends or school friends, or just share some fun with friends or work colleagues.

The event includes three routes of increasing difficulty of a 7km run/walk or a 15km run/walk, and, for a gruelling test of endurance, a 30km run/walk.

The challenge is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Toowoomba South and its satellite club, Rotary Edge, and raises funds for local charities. This event will be back for the third year on the 28th April 2019.

Course Details

What to Expect from the Course:

The 7km, 15km, and 30km courses offer an amazing scenic route through the Toowoomba range.  There will be checkpoints offering an opportunity to stop for water and snacks, as well as volunteer support to keep you motivated.  First Aid members will be stationed at various checkpoints.

Jubilee Park Trail Section:

Continue along Jubilee Bridal Trail which as this point includes some parklands with houses off to your left.  At the junction of Jubilee Bridal Trail and Tristania Trail, take the track to the right and continue down Tristania Trail.

Continue along Tristania Trail until you get to the large clearing, continuing along Tristania as it descends.  Ignore the track junction off to the left signed Bridle Trail, Harvey St 500m as this is the return route.  Continue to the right along Tristania and under the high tension power lines.

Further down the hill ignore the Sandstone Ridge Trail on the right and stay to the fire road.  Continue down the main fire trail until you arrive at the bottom of the hill at Checkpoint 1 (J) which is situated in the picnic gazebo shelter.  There are toilets located at this checkpoint and water to refill bottles.

Return, retrace your steps up the main fire road and turn right into Crebra Trail.  Follow this trail as it loops back out to a junction of Crebra Trail and Tristania Trail.  Turn right under the high tension power lines and retrace the route back up the hill for 300m then turn right up to the hill marked with the sign “Bridle Trail Harvey St 500m’.

Continue up Jubilee Bridle Trail and through the steep section with a couple of switchbacks under the high tension power lines.  At this point which is just below Harvey St, the trail splits and then rejoins – keep to the right.  Note: the route then travels very close to Harvey St and at the end of Harvey St is a gazebo and a council drinking tap if you are short on water.

Continue south along Jubilee Bridle Trail as it winds along behind houses in an open parkland environment.  Ignore the number of road entrance gates on your right and stay to the main fire trail.  The trail comes to a close a the end of Woolridge St where it bends left and descends slightly to intersect with the outgoing course.  Turn right here and retrace the route back to Bridge St and cross over section.

Follow the directions of the traffic control personnel and cross Bridge Street and enter Redwood Park.

Redwood Park Trail Section – approx. 6km

Turn right off Bridge Street at the entry to Redwood Park and head south down a steep descent for 150m. At the bottom, turn right and head southwest along Redwood Bridle Trail.

Ignore the trail that branches off on the right at approximately the 800m point of the Redwood Bridal Trail.

Continue along Redwood Bridle Trail for a further 400m and take the Eagle Nest Trail on your left. Do not follow the Redwood Bridal Trail that deviates slightly off to the right.

Continue along Eagle Nest Trail for approximately 900m ignoring any trails going off on the left until meeting with the junction of Grass Tree Trail on the right. Continue straight on for approximately 90m and turn left to continue East on Grass Tree Trail for approximately 600m to arrive at the Picnic Ground and Checkpoint 3. Note that emergency vehicles can access Redwood from the Range. 

Leaving the picnic area cross Gatton Creek and head north up Redwood Forest Walk.

Ignore Ferntree Gully Walk Trail that branches off to the left and continues right up Redwood Forest

Walk and continue through the old Zoo fence at the gate. Continue following the trail until you come to the track that ascends steeply for 150m back up to the entrance of Redwood Park at Bridge Street.

For 15km participants turn right and return to the start area and for 30km participants turn left and repeat the course for a second lap.

Travel

Where To Park

On race day park along Campbell Street and Wirra Wirra Street.  There will be very limited parking at the start/ finish line, so we recommend you ask someone to drop you off.  They can Cheer you on as you cross the start line and finish line!

Please be careful when parking and crossing the roads.  Do not park or block any driveways or cars, nor park on Council’s nature strips.  Lock your car and do not leave any valuables in sight. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

TACAPS Carpark off Wirra Wirra Street (opposite the kindergarten) is restricted to sponsors, event coordinators, and first aid members as space are limited.

What Do I Need To Bring – Compulsory Equipment:

What to wear checklist  –

  • Sunhat
  • Well-fitting walking shoes or trainers
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket
  • Sports top or we encourage all participants to wear the Milne Bay Military Challenge t-shirt.
  • Shorts or hiking pants

What to bring checklist –

  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks, fruit and nut bars, bananas, etc
  • Towelette or small quick dry towel
  • Minimum of two (2) mobile phones per team (preferably on two different networks with one on the Telstra Network with the same phone numbers given to the Event Organisers as registration details.  Race Officials may send out SMS alert messages or call in case of an emergency to these phone numbers.
  • Hydration bladder, 1-litre water bottle or you can use your free water bottle which can be filled on site.  Participants must have the ability to carry a least 1 litre of water in bottles or a hydration bladder.  Water and Tailwind will be available at all checkpoints, however, cups will not be provided.
  • Your race number bib is preferably worn on the front of your shirt.
  • Please put the following emergency contact number into your phone contacts list – MBMC Emergency Number: 0490 524 560.

FAQs

Minimum age requirements for Events are as follows:

  • For all 30km events, the minimum age is 13 in a year of the event (with appropriate physical training)
  • For all events – Participants under 18yrs of age must be accompanied by an adult (18 or over) in a team and approved by the organiser with a signed Waiver Form by a parent or guardian.
  • For all 15km events, the minimum age is 10 in the year of the event (with appropriate physical training).

Will There Be First-Aid Stations On The Course?

First Aid members will be located along the routes and at the Start line and Finish line.  If you are feeling unwell please report to the nearest official or medical personnel as soon as possible.  If you see a fellow participant in distress, please report the incident by contacting our MBMC organisation ordinator’s phone number: 0490 524 560 or see the First Aid member

In an emergency, call triple zero – 000.

Can I Wear Headphones?

For your safety and the safety of all participants,  wearing headphones is not recommended while participating in the race. However, if you do, keep the volume down at a safe level so you can hear other runners and instructions from event personnel. It is important for you to be aware of other participants coming up behind you as well as being able to hear potential wildlife animals or even snakes. The important thing is paying attention to everyone’s safety and maintaining basic race etiquette with other participants.

Will I Get A Finishers Medal?

Not a medal, but you will receive a Milne Bay Military Challenge t-shirt and water bottle at registration check-in and a digital results certificate. Medals are not offered as we try to ensure our event costs are largely covered by registration fees, meeting that all funds raised will go into supporting our charities and community projects.

What About Snakes And Wildlife?

As this is a trail race there is always the risk of coming across wildlife including snakes.

What to do if you see a snake?

If you see a snake while running, do not panic! Back away slowly and carefully look for a way around. Also be sure to shout out “snake” and point out the location so other participants are aware and can carefully get around it. Snakes will generally leave you alone if they are not provoked. Simply left alone, snakes will continue on with their life, they do not actively seek out confrontations with any of their natural enemies, humans included. The number one reason people are bitten by venomous snakes throughout this country is because of the attempt to catch, kill, or tease them when we find them.
