The 40th Anniversary Novotel Mountain to Surf Marathon will be held on Saturday 2nd March 2019!

This event is one of the longest “running” marathon events in New Zealand and is strongly supported by the locals, with sponsorship and participation. The event is also the Taranaki Marathon Championships.

This event was designed with the intention of becoming one of New Zealand’s fastest marathon courses. It is a net downhill course all on road starting at the high point of the Egmont National Park gates at approx 460m above sea level and finishing at the Marine Park in Waitara (sea level).

This year they are finishing in Waitara!

Mountain to Surf routes

Set to the stunning backdrop of the the New Zealand countryside. The Marathon starts at Egmont National Park Gates. Racers will run down Egmont Road where they will pass Kaimiro and move onto Bedford Road and then Durham Rod where they will come to Inglewood. In Inglewood marathon runners will be directed through the town and will meet the start of the half marathon. Runners will leave Inglewood via Mountain Road, running to Devon Road (SH3) which will take the runners through Brixton in the process. Arriving in Waitara runners will be directed to the finish at the Marine Park with a view if the Taman Sea.

Aid stations will be located at regular intervals along the course. These aid stations will supply both water and Hammer Nutrition electrolyte (no electrolyte available at 4.5km aid station).

4.5km (water only), 9.0km, 14.5km, 19.4km, 21.1km, 25.3km, 30.0km, 35.0km, 40.0km and 42.2km

First Aid is provided on the course. They will have final say over whether a participant is safe to continue.

Results & Prizes

Every finisher in the marathon, half marathon, and 5km will be awarded a medal.

In the marathon and half-marathon events the place getters overall and in various age group categories will be awarded.

The overall place getters in every race and Taranaki Marathon Champions will be recognised at the prize-giving. Age group winner will be recognised at prize-giving.

The feature Novotel Mountain to Surf Marathon race will have prize money as follows:

  • First Male Marathon Runner: $500
  • First Female Marathon Runner: $500
  • All merit prizes are calculated on “gun time”.

    Major spot prizes will be drawn at prize-giving and winners must be there to collect their spot prizes otherwise it will be redrawn.

    Minor spot prizes will be drawn before the event and can be collected with race packs.

    FACILITIES

    Race Head Quarters;

    Race HQ is located at Novotel New Plymouth. All enquiries should be directed there.

    Gear Vans

    A gear van will be at the marathon start line and the half marathon start line to take competitors gear to the finish line.

    Place your gear in a small bag marked with your name and race number. Competitors are fully responsible for security of their personal belongings at the event.

    Toilets

    Marathon toilets are available at the start line. Please ensure you use them and not the National Park bush areas.

    Toilets are also available at 21.1 km and the finish area.

    Refreshments

    Water and fruit are available to entrants in the Finish Areas – 21.1km for the team event and 42.2km.

    Food and beverages will be available to purchase at the finish area.

    Post-event dinner is also available to purchase from Novotel New Plymouth for $30 with a $1 from every meal supporting our local charity. The buffet dinner will be held before the major prize giving.

    Please join us for happy hour at the conclusion of prize giving.

    Massage

    Post-race massage by Body Smart will be available at the finish area. $20 for 20 minutes. Cash only, no booking required.

    Registration

    Race numbers and race packs will be available for collection from Novotel, New Plymouth, on Friday 1st March (5:30 pm – 8.30pm). Photo ID will be required.

    Cut off Times

    Due to traffic management limitations, and use of volunteers at aid stations, participants have until 1.30 pm to complete the events.

    Runners expected to take greater than 6 hours are asked to contact the organisers and start at 6.30 AM with the walkers to ensure completion of the event.

    Timing Chip and Race Number

    Race numbers must be worn high on your chest and be visible at all times. They must not be cut or folded.

    Your race number has a disposable electronic Timing Transponder stuck on the back. Do not trim or fold the number, or tamper with the transponder in any way.

    The Timing Transponder is programmed to your name, event and the correct start time. Do not mix up your race number with another participant, and make sure you start with the correct event.

    The timing transponder is disposable.

    Pre-Race Briefings

    A pre-race briefing will be held at the start of every event. All entrants must attend.

    Marathon Walkers

    New Plymouth - Novotel Hotel: 5.30 AM, Waitara: 5.30 AM

    Marathon Runners

    New Plymouth - Novotel Hotel: 6.30 AM, Waitara: 6.30 AM

    ½ Marathon Entrants

    New Plymouth - Novotel Hotel: 8.15 AM, Waitara: 8.15 AM

    After the event, buses will depart from Waitara to New Plymouth at the following times: 12.30 pm and 1.45 pm.

    Participants will have to advise when entering if they are intending on using this service.

    No vehicles will be permitted past Kaimiro Hall (4km from the start) after 7.00am. Drivers travelling up Egmont Road must take extreme care as walkers will be on the road from 6.30 AM.

    Spectators

    Spectators are always are encouraged to cheer on the runners. Because the race is run along many country roads the Finish and Starting area are the best areas for spectating

    Eligibility

  • The Novotel Marathon is open to all competitors over the age of 18 years.
  • The Frontrunner Half Marathon is open to all competitors over the age of 16 years.
  • The Novotel 5km Fun Run/Walk is open to all competitors.
  • We recommend that all young children competing on the course are accompanied by an adult.
  • Race rules

  • Entrants under the age of 16 must have signed consent from a parent or guardian.
  • Entrants must give way to traffic at all times.
  • Entrants must obey directions from event officials, traffic management providers, police and first aid personnel.
  • Roller blades, skateboards, bicycles, baby buggies (wheeled conveyances) and dogs are prohibited as are headphones and personal music devices.
  • Walk entrants must only walk. Walkers seen running will be reallocated into the run category.
  • Participants must not be accompanied by anyone not entered in the event, except; In special circumstances, as arranged personally with the race organiser
  • Participants must not run or walk more than two abreast at any time, and on all major roads, must only run single file, passing on the left hand side.
  • All participants must attend the pre-race briefing on the start line, 15 min prior to each start.
  • Race numbers must not be cut or folded and must be worn high on your chest and be visible on the outside of clothing at all times.
  • The organisers reserve the right to withdraw any entrant who, A) does not comply with race rules, or, B) they consider unsafe to continue for medical reasons.
