The 2019 edition will be a point to point swim starting in the harbour of Charlestown and finishing on the beach in the harbour of Polkerris.

The route will take you across St Austell Bay from east to west passing all the Carlyon Bay beaches plus Spit and Par before finishing at Polkerris.

Hopefully, you'll be rewarded with a clear flat calm turquoise sea and lots of ocean wildlife en route. And as always a massive swim-five from the Mad Hatter crew at the finish will await every competitor from 1st to last. What's not to like?

Each competitor will receive a coloured swim hat and a special commemorative medal. Male and female prizes for overall 1st, 2nd, 3rd and AG winners.

Registration will take place at Polkerris and we will transport you to the start unless you have your own transport with family/friends. You will only be able to take that which you need on the transport so please plan on what you need to take and what you will leave in the baggage store at Polkerris.

What’s Included
Each competitor will be given a token at registration for a FREE hot drink from Polkerris Beach Company.
Raceday Logistics
We will be supplying a FREE coach journey from Polkerris
to Charlestown for the start of the swim. This service is for
competitors only and is a ONE WAY journey so please make
sure nothing is left on the coach as it will not return to Polkerris.

There will be a final check-in process just before you go
down to the beach for final swim attendance numbers.
ALL competitors must check-in and attend the race briefing
on the beach as this will contain essential information.
We will collect any shoes left at Charlestown and transport
them back to Polkerris. These will be placed in the yard for
your collection after the swim.

There is a large car park on the right before entering the
village. It is £1 per hour up to 3hrs and £4 for an All Day
ticket. The beach is only a five minute walk down the hill.
Additional parking can be found if you follow the road after
turning right for Polkerris (and not turn right again for the
village). This is a simple field and the charge is £2.50 per
day via an honesty box. The beach is a 4 minute walk via an
uneven track that is not suitable for buggies, wheelchairs or
those unsteady on their feet.

Brilliant event as always. A beautiful swim, which was clearly marked. Best medal I have ever received! Definitely one for the diary!

Wow! What an incredible event this was. The 5km swim along part of the UK's most beautiful coastline was a real treat to swim in. The event was so well organised. This was the first time I had met anyone from the MadHatters group and I can honestly say that never have I felt so welcome to a new group of friends and a sports club. The kindness and helpfulness of the MadHatters community is something I can't describe. I am definitely going to be joining them for future swims - because of the beautiful are but also because they are all such a great bunch of people. Thank you all X

Although i've just turned 60 this is only the 4th organised sea swim i've taken part in and certainly the furthest!
I enjoyed everything about it. The location is stunning and the organisers are professional and very friendly.
I can't think of anything that could be done in the way of improvement and i'm looking forward very much in taking part at Mad Hatter events in 2019.

So I did the 5Km last year which was an out and back route. This year totally different from one beach to one just over 5Km away. Unfortunately due to typical British weather the first date was not safe and so the date was postponed. However on Saturday the sun was out and the sea was calm. I was very nervous at doing this one as I had a bad race at my last swim event (Not a Mad Hatter one) but thankfully the two Johnnies reassured me I will be fine. As always trying to sight the big buoys was not happening but thankfully you could sight using the water support who were on SUPs (could have done with a few more as the field got really spread out). Was totally exhausted at the end but thankfully Martin helped me out of the water and one of the John Wisner made sure I got my cake! And boy what a stunning medal! Will definitely be signing up for next year.

This event was superb in terms of the logistics, location, support and the whole experience! I enjoyed the distance of this event and its unique location. The Madhatter events are always first class events and I have always enjoyed their events in the past. The people organising this event are friendly and the prizes and awards are outstanding and unique! I thoroughly reccommend this event if you want to have a go at some long distance open water swimming whether you are a novice or an experienced athlete!

Not many sea swims of this distance around and it was in a lovely setting. Well organised and friendly event, although it could be improved in a few small ways. Great photos afterwards too! Quite expensive.

A longer coastal swim set on a beautiful part of the Cornish coast. Easy to navigate out and back course with plenty of safety cover. Nice cafe and pub on the beach for spectators. A grand day out!

First time doing the distance, lots of support from organisers and the sea safety group. Always someone close by if any problems. Great course, great views of the beautiful Cornish coastline. Rare but exciting oppertunity to either race, or take it easy and enjoy! Recommended.

As usual lots of encouragement and support from the mad hatters with good prizes for winners and those that have persevered and tried their very best!Beautiful course, well marked.Great end to the year's events.

Simply brilliant.  I hadn't comitted to register for this race and to ensure everyone's safety and provide better conditions the race date was changed.  Registration on the day was simple and straightforward.  Conditions perfect thanks to the date change, the excellent local knowledge of the team definately came into play here.  Water support and course settiing out great.  Well done again Madhatters.
