In the glorious private setting of the Flete Estate, Holbeton, Devon (PL81LW) we are hosting a Long marathon/Baby Ultra-Marathon distance race, its actually 29.5 miles. It involves 2 estuary crossings at Burgh Island and the Erme Estuary before finishing in the pretty village of Holbeton.

Courses are now designed so you can expect a lovely mix of private footpaths, coastal path, bridle paths, country fields and Woodland. However, the marathon incorporates the South West Coast Path on both sides of the estuary including a beach section at Bigbury-on-Sea and a run across the causeway to the privately owned Burgh Island.

On marked paths to the west of the island, we take you up to the top of the island, you descend and cross the causeway to continue the South West Coast Path further westwards climbing some awesome hills before racing the tide at Wonwell beach, across the estuary and running across Mothecombe beach. You then follow a circular route, continuing on the South West Coast Path for a few miles and on to the village to finish to pick up your well earned medal.

Course Details

The 15.5 mile, long half-marathon, primarily beautiful Woodland trails with the tranquility of the estuary in close proximity, for the first 7 miles and then across the estuary. It may only be 7 miles until the crossing but there is still a tide to race because the start time of 12:30pm gives you exactly 2 hours to reach the Crossing area, and an aid station. This is based on running at 4mph and there are only a few hills prior to this and once over the estuary you join the South West Coast Path that involve some typical coastal path ascents. Then you continue inland to bridlepaths and footpaths and back into the Woodland on the Flete Estate. The total ascent is approximately 613 metres. It is not an elitist race and we hope to cater for all speeds of runner.

The 8.5 mile Woodland Trail also includes a crossing of the estuary. The route is primarily 2 beautiful woodlands areas on both sides of the estuary. The start time is 12:30pm. A Race The Tide event medal will waiting for you at the finish. An aid station will be at 3.2 and 7.3 miles with water, coke and some snacks. Total ascent 242m.

  • Did the Long Half marathon in 2019

This was a lovely course - my first ever river crossing!! The support from the start and aid stations was great. The support on the beach (where the crossing was), was fabulous and the supporters made me feel like a 'real' runner!!
The course was well sheltered, which was great as it was a very hot and sunny day, but this would have been equally beneficial if it was cold and/or windy.
The finish line support was super, as was the whole atmosphere. Very friendly and encouraging runners, supporters and organisers.
Fantastic aid stations and finish line station with a super medal!

My first trail run, had a blast! The course was very tough - quite a different experience to road running. I would recommend this to anyone, but bring better shoes than I did!

  • Did the Long Half marathon in 2019

Loved the race - it had a great course and one of the best finisher's medals I've received. I'll definitely go back next year, maybe for the ultra!
  • Did the Long Marathon=Ultra! in 2019

I found it to be a well organised event, however the atmosphere was a little lacking but perhaps you would expect that for a smaller event
  • Did the Woodland Trail in 2019

I've never done one of these before, but frankly I was astounded by just how much fun I had. I will definitely be signing up for another!
  • Did the Long Marathon=Ultra! in 2019

Just an amazing race! My first ever ultra, and it didn't disappoint. One of the most beautiful courses that I've ever been on as well as a very nice group of runners. I'll definitely go back next year!
  • Did the Long Half marathon in 2019

Really beautiful race, well marshaled, but certainly a toughie! The hills in the course are no joke - a mate of mine did the ultra and my legs hurt even thinking about it - but it was well worth the effort!
