Venue Description and Directions:
The venue for Ragnar Trail Appalachians is located at Big Bear Lake Camplands in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.
Directions: Take Exit 29 off Route 68. If coming from the West take a right, if coming from the East take a left. You will follow this road for about 3.5 miles all the way to Big Bear. Once you hit the guard shack at the front of the park tell them you are here for Ragnar and pass on through.
Venue Address: 450 Big Bear Lake Road, Bruceton Mills, WV 26525
Parking
Parking for this year's event will be similar to last year. Each team will be allowed to park ONE VEHICLE near the camping area. The rest of the vehicles will need to be parked near the guard shack at the entrance to the park. The one car that will be parked near camping will be designated by a Ragnar Sticker, we refer to these vehicles as the Team Shuttle Vehicle. There will be 2 Ragnar shuttles that you can use to get back to the camping area after parking your car near the entrance parking. Please, if at all possible, try to carpool. There is limited parking at the venue and carpooling helps the environment, creates a smoother load in and load out process, reduces your parking fee, and helps to promote team bonding (especially post-race when you razz the smelly runner in the bunch all the way home)! Try and limit your team vehicles to 2, 3 at most.
Event day logistics
Arrival Details - Thursday
Thursday Arrival
Thursday Arrival time will be 3:30pm. Please do not arrive before 3:30pm, the venue cannot accommodate cars lining up prior to the opening time. If you have gear to drop off near the camping area please drive the 2.5 miles following Ragnar signs to the Village area. Follow all posted speed limits while at Big Bear Campgrounds (20 MPH). You will be driving through a residential area where people of all ages will be cruising around on golf carts. Please do not come to the venue past 10 PM. Gates will be closing. No vehicles will be allowed to enter the park after this time. There will be a $10/night parking fee ($20 for Thursday Arrivals, $10 for Friday Arrivals). The parking fee will be CASH ONLY. If there is a medical issue overnight on Thursday, there will be a medic in the medic tent located in the main village area. If you have an emergency, call 911, then go see the medic in the medic tent.
The arrival process: Please read through this and follow along with the layouts below..
When you first enter Big Bear Lake Campgrounds, the Big Bear staff will confirm that you are a Ragnar participant, and you'll be waved ahead to our volunteers.
You will be guided into a line and then make your way up to the Orange Ragnar Tent. It is here that you will pay your parking fee of $10/vehicle/night (Saturday night excluded). You will also receive your Team Shuttle Vehicle sticker at this point. This allows one of your teams vehicles to park near the camping area. This sticker will be placed on the windshield of a vehicle, and will be given to the first vehicle that arrives for your team. All other vehicles park near the main park entrance and use our Ragnar shuttles, or your one designated team vehicle to get back and forth (we prefer that you use the Ragnar Shuttle, please try and limit your driving while at the event).
Vehicles will then drive 2.5 miles down the road to the Gear Drop/Camping/Village area where they will enter the gear drop area.
The Gear Drop Area functions just like an airport drop-off area. Please decide on the map where you and your team will be camping ahead of time if at all possible. The tree'd camping area offers great views of runners finishing their loops, is shaded, and full of excitement. The camping along the landing strip is also awesome and full of energy, but is not quite as boisterous as the tree'd camping can be.
When you enter the corresponding gear drop, you'll pull off to the side, unload your gear and passengers in 5-8 minutes, the driver only will get back in their vehicle and proceed to one of the two parking areas (the Team Shuttle Vehicle area, or parking back up near the entrance of the park). If you are parking in the main parking area near the entrance, we will have 15-passenger vans running as shuttles. Hours are oulined in the race schedule.
* Please note via the orange arrows in the second graphic below, that the gear drop along the landing strip is a one way loop, and pull-offs for unloading gear is only on the right hand side of that loop. There is camping in the middle of that landing strip and on both sides.
Camping/ Check-in
Runners can camp Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night(Saturday night parking has no fee). No one will be allowed into the parking lot, village, gear drop or camping area before 3:30 PM on Thursday or 7 AM Friday. Please keep your team's footprint within a 17 foot by 17 foot space. Some camping areas will be marked with chalk, please stay within the chalked lines in those areas.
Tree Camping: There is a ton of tree camping at this venue! Feel free to use these areas and any other tree camping areas you may find!
Camping is allowed Saturday night. If you don't feel like packing up on Saturday, just hang tight and stay another night. The Ragnar Village will be broken down, and there will not be any vendor or food sales, but feel free to enjoy a final night of camping. We only ask that when you leave Sunday morning you meticulously pick up waste and microtrash around your area, and take it home with you to dispose of, even if you don't think it is yours.
