They say Arran is Scotland in miniature. From dense forests and coastal scenery in the South to crumbling castles and dramatic mountains in the North, the Isle of Arran delights at every turn. Welcome to Ultra Tour of Arran a 2-day off-road running adventure from Rat Race the UKs favourite adventure sports crew.

We do events differently. And for this one, we love the notion of setting sail to a location over the water where you will feel a million miles away, but where you are in fact within easy reach of the mainland. With a simple 55-minute ferry crossing and a bundle of easy logistics thrown in, we encourage you to raise your clan and bring them over with you, enjoy our basecamp vibe, camp, run and be merry.

We know youll love Arran, and its not just the running. The island itself has a lot to offer with its own whisky distillery, artisan cheese, great food, history and a lovely ambience. And the running? Well, this wee piece of paradise has it all: Dont let its size fool you though packing a 50km Ultra each day over a 2 day weekend you will rack up 100km with serious vertical gain.The mountains are high, the glens deep, the forests enchanting and the coastal scenery stunning. Chose to do Day 1 only or the full 2-day Ultra Tour, operating from a central Basecamp location with all the trappings of a Rat Race event good food, great amenities, friendly staff, Saturday night entertainment and of course, a well-stocked bar.

Overnight parking will be available at the base camp area or close by,  We strongly recommend parking on the mainland at Ardrossan Ferry Terminal and coming across as a foot passenger, to connect with our free shuttle bus to basecamp. Parking is available however and will be subject to a charge. You will need to buy a ticket from Registration and park in the designated area to avoid any additional charges. The ticket will be £20 for the weekend or part thereof and will be valid all weekend. There are additional options for those who wish to bring Campervans and ‘Park and Pitch’ options too. Or take the hassle out of the travel and use our pre-pitched Glamping options.


Ardrossan is located some 40 miles south of Glasgow and is easily accessible from the motorway and main road network of the UK. It is the main ferry terminal for Arran and whilst there is a crossing that serves Lochranza on Arran from the Mull of Kintyre on the mainland, we 100% recommend the Ardrossan – Brodick crossing.

The crossing takes 55 mins and is operated by CalMac, on large, modern boats with catering, shop, seating on board and multiple vehicle decks plus space for 1000 foot passengers per sailing. There are up to 10 sailings per day and you can book vehicle and foot passengers in advance, once the sailings schedule has been released, usually 6 months out from the event. THERE IS NO ISSUE WITH FOOT PASSENGER AVAILABILITY at any time, given the extremely high capacity.

Vehicle spots do sell out on some sailings closer to the sailing date, so you should prioritise those bookings when sailing become available, although they are extremely unlikely to sell out for all crossings and they will only ever sell out much closer to the sailing date. If taking a vehicle, we would advise booking your ferry travel as soon as you can after booking your event entry. For Foot Passengers, the advice from CalMac is that this is really not required and space will always be available. Of course, the earlier you book, the more piece of mind you will have.



There is a car park at Ardrossan Ferry Terminal with space for 500 vehicles. You cannot book in advance and it is £4/ first 4 hrs and £3 per 24 hrs thereafter. If it is full (unlikely) then there is extra on-street parking in the town, which is adjacent. The foot passenger fare is £7.50 per person, return. On arrival in Brodick, we will have a free on demand shuttle service operating for you and your luggage. Head for our minibus at the port and it will take you to the Ultra Tour Basecamp.


This is fine and the fare is reasonable: £30.20 return for a standard car and £7.50 per person return for each passenger inside. When you get to the island, there is parking offered for the full weekend at or near our Basecamp for £20. Weekend parking is limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. It is available to book in advance

Kit List

There is a mandatory kit list below. Your kit will be checked before you are allowed to Register. Random kit checks will be carried out on the morning of the race. If you are missing a mandatory item you will not be allowed to Register or Start. We take the mandatory kit very seriously and it is there to keep you safe. Please take time to read it and if you do have questions, we are always happy to help.

Mandatory Kit list: Waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers (of full-body leg cover), 600ml of liquid at all times, gloves, hat (Rat Rag/Buff is OK), fully charged phone, emergency bivvy and a roller bandage.


How old do I need to be to compete in the Ultra Tour of Arran?
Rat Race require participants to be 18 +.

How long do I have?
The race takes place over 2day, with 2 distinct day stages. Each stage will start at 07:30 and runners have until 19:30 to cross the finish line on both days. Cut off times are in place throughout the course. If you are behind schedule to finish on time there may be short-course options although in all cases we will endeavour to return you to the base camp location using event transport if you fail to meet the cut-off time. Details will be released shortly.

Will there be food and drink en route?
There will be 3 pit stops on the route each day at distance intervals to be confirmed. Pit stops 1 and 3 will have water and isotonic drinks with some sweets. Pit-stop 2 will have some more substantial food items and hot drinks – flapjack, cakes, sandwiches, tea, coffee and other snacks.
