Are you ready in Scotland?

Thats right, Rough Runner is coming back for the 4th year running! Our inaugural event in 2016 was a great success, soon superseded by our 2017 event, and then even more at our 2018 events in the stunning Penicuik House - that saw over double the numbers and amazing feedback, so we have to come back in 2019!

So were bringing back our awesome, TV game show-inspired obstacles north of the border, although have just moved over to a different, although also stunning new venue, Penicuik Estate, thats right in the middle of a bunch of major Scottish cities. Its an amazing place and it makes for an incredible course.

For those whove been before, come back, take on a long distance and see what new obstacles and fun things we have in store for you!

So go create a team, grab some friends and colleagues and help us to make an absolutely amazing event happen!

Roughian Rascals is also back, but bigger and better, with wet obstacles for the kids! This is a 1 mile course designed specifically for adventure-seeking kids from 7 to 12 years old.

For those that miss the boat you can also get them on the day of the event, but expect to pay a little extra!)
  • Free Roughian wristband.
  • Course Details

Roughian Rascals is also back, but bigger and better, with wet obstacles for the kids! This is a 1-mile course designed specifically for adventure-seeking kids from 7 to 12 years old.

The course will give kids the chance to get wet, possibly a little muddy (weather dependent!), and experience some unique, cool and fun obstacles – in a safe and managed environment.

There will be multiple time slots and we can give you flexibility on your wave to make sure everyone can run!

We have a fully managed car park on site, and we have a traffic management system in operation with AA road signs in place showing where to go.

Car parking is just £5 per car, cash on the gate that covers the cost of operating all this.

    Getting There- Driving:

  • Edinburgh – 30 mins
  • Glasgow – 50 mins
  • Perth – 1 hour
  • Dundee – 1hr 20 mins
  • Dumfries – 1hr 20 mins
  • Your best option totally depends on where you’re coming from, but the closest bus stop is at Duddingstone Terrace, then you’re on foot for about a mile to get to the venue!

    Kit List

Wear appropriate gear for the weather and conditions.

    1. Spikes WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. We have obstacles that spikes can cause damage to and we don’t want to take any risks. Your shoes will be checked before you race. Note that spikes also include football boots with “studs”. If you haven’t got shoes without spikes, be prepared to run barefoot!

    2. Do NOT wear any jewellery – rings, watches, earrings etc – as they can get caught on obstacles and be damaged or actually hurt you.

    3. Suitable clothing. This is up to you, but we’d suggest a warm change of clothes for after the event and gloves to use during (for all those nets and ropes). You will get muddy, and so will your trainers, so don’t wear anything you are particularly precious about!

    Things you’ll need to bring:

    1. A print out of your ticket, a signed waiver, and photo ID. You can’t race without!

    2. Cash for food and drinks on site – card payment machines out in the countryside can be temperamental. Car parking is £5 cash on the day.

There is free access to the event for all spectators, except for a £5 parking fee if driving separately. We want to encourage our Roughians to bring their friends and families to see them take on The Travelator at the finish line, and don’t feel the need to charge for it!

Our Marshals take on very important roles, guiding our runners through the obstacles and around the route, and of course providing encouragement and support all along the way!

Volunteer shifts generally run between 7am – 4/5/6pm, with details to be confirmed 1-2 weeks before the race date.

    As a member of our Volunteer team, you will receive the following items as thanks helping us run this truly epic event!;

    – Free Rough Runner high quality technical t-shirt
    – Free lunch
    – Free tea & coffee
    – Free entry to a future race

    What's the minimum age?

The minimum age for all Rough Runner events is 16 years old at the time of the event.

    This is for insurance reasons.

    Are dogs allowed?

In most cases Dogs aren't allowed, however, each venue we operate at have their own policies. Please drop an email to [email protected] to inquire. As much as we love our furry friends, there is often livestock around and we try to respect the venue owners' wishes as much as possible.

Any dogs that are brought to events, guide dogs or otherwise must be kept on leads at all times, and any foul must be picked up and disposed of properly!

    Have you got showers?

There are hot showers at most of our events. Please email us if you'd like to check!

To help raise money for our chosen charity, The Stroke Association, there's a minimal charge.

We strongly urge you to bring a towel and a fresh change of dry clothes! If it's hot you'll be sweaty, if it's wet you'll be muddy! Either way, it's much nicer to have a drink at the bar if you're feeling fresh!

    Have you got changing rooms?

We have changing facilities, but it’s basic – literally a marquee tent, one for men, and one for women. There’s nothing inside them
