TAKE ON THE "WORLD'S CRAZIEST AND MOST WORTHWHILE MARATHON" IN SIERRA LEONE
Street Child's stunning award-winning Sierra Leone Marathon is the only international marathon where runners are united behind the same fundraising goal and get to meet the children they are fundraising to support. Voted 'Best International Event' at the 2017 Running Awards, this African adventure is one you'll never forget.

The 2018 marathon will return to bustling Makeni, the third largest city in Sierra Leone and home to Street Child's first-ever projects. Winding through tropical forest and local villages, this unique race is one you'll never forget. With an electric atmosphere, whether you choose to walk, jog or run you will be welcomed by local people and high-fived by children along the route. It's an experience that unites everyone. What's more, the Sierra Leone Marathon is the only marathon in the world where all participants are united behind a common cause and get to meet the children that they're fundraising for.

I absolutely loved this marathon - I couldn't recommend it highly enough. A group of 5 of us flew out to Freetown, we travelled around for a week before and then met up with the other runners. Everyone was so nice and the organisation was incredible. You start very early in the morning because of the heat, and the atmosphere was incredible, lots of singing and dancing as we waited in the dark for kick off. The route takes you on trails through lots of villages where people come out to cheer and run along with you. The trees were heavy with mangos so we were always in high spirits, even though over that distance you might not see other runners for a few miles. It was an amazing experience, the humidity was crazy so I'd recommend a lot of training in advance. It took me about 1 hour 30 mins more than a usual marathon because of the heat and humidity. The runners, the beauty, the culture, the atmosphere, it's an absolute must run. If in doubt - DO IT.
