Event summary

The Tokyo Marathon has joined the ranks of World Marathon Majors, alongside London, Boston, Berlin, Chicago and New York, as the newest member of this exclusive club, having reached maturity incredibly quickly. Runners have two reasons to travel: one is for the race, of course, but the second is to experience running in a different culture - there are few cultural experiences that are so discernibly different to the UK than Japan. It's a fast course, symbolising the past, present and the future of Tokyo.

The best Marathon race so far. Courses is flat and weather is perfect. Water station is long enough, so I have time to grab a drink. Photographer is hardly to find at finishing line. Not like other race, theres tons of photographers taking pictures at finishing line. Walked too long to get foil blanket and its cold.

Nothing that I didnt know. The only thing that I would do different is arrive in Japan 1 week earlier. The Jet Lag hit me hard.

This race was a challenge! first because of the time difference in Tokyo it was 9 more hours. Then because the race is very fast in the first km and it was necessary to find the right pace to not have surprises at the end of the race!

Maybe just be prepared for the cold weather in Tokyo. Otherwise, its a beautiful and fairly fast marathon! Dont let yourselves be dragged by the crowd! Keep your pace, smile and enjoy it.

It was a great race. You can run with no frustration. But you must wait about one hour at the start line. It's cold every year. So you had better put on cape or something like that.

The overall race for me was one of the most difficult marathons I have taken part in. I have done 13 marathons, 7 total world majors (5 different courses), so I have quite a few under my belt. I woke up sick in the morning and struggled to even get dressed. I ran the first part of the marathon ok, but at the halfway point my body was done and the second half required walking. I wish I had known how the Expo was organized prior to planning my trip to Tokyo. I was on my feet for 3+ hours Saturday at the Expo waiting in lines and getting through the Expo. I also did the Friendship Run that morning, which was enjoyable, but added an additional 2 hours of standing/walking/running.The course is flat and should be very fast. There are sites to see on the run (shrines, Sky Tree, Tokyo Tower) and the crowds are substantial. The day was at least dry, but it was cold (35 degrees F). It also was windy in areas of the course. Also, there are 3 turnaround points and you double back the way you just came.

You sit around in the cold (around 2 deg) at the last pen area before race start for longer than any of the other big city marathons I've experienced (45min +) - toileting can be a problem. Massive lines for the toilets prior to the final pen area and no options to sneak off anywhere :) Watch out for the squat toilets - western style toilets are also provided. Train to the start line was a very simple option and plenty of race marshals to direct you out of the subway to the start line area.

Had a great race apart from having to fight my way through some slower startblocks (my startblock was gauged off a marathon where I got injured and they did not let me change it). It does get cold so make sure you take something warm you can throw away before the start and make sure you visit a toilet before getting to the venue. I saw huge lines and people do not just jump into a bush in Japan. The volunteers are amazing and everything is very well organized. Course supplies are numerous although I only used water (and gels I brought myself). Great race. Have seen more enthousiastic crowds but thats the only thing that could get improved here in my opinion! Course is VERY flat. If Berlin is 10/10 coursewise then this is 9/10.

The run course was not as flat as thought out to be, as a comparison to the previous years edition. It was touted to be flatter but not that much so.

The race does not allow you to carry water bottle into the starting area, I had to leave my running bottle behind. Give yourself enough time to get to the starting area, high security getting to the starting area.

Remember to bring a disposable warm layer. It can be cold waiting at the start. Toilets queues were shorter after bag drop than the ones before the bag drop.

If you want to run fast in the Tokyo marathon, please go to the entrance 2 hours in advance and line up at the start position 1 hour before.Doing so will avoid traffic jams after the start.

So far my favorite major. I already ran NyC, Chicago 3 times and Berlin and Tokyo I dont know why, but it was espectacular for me. The only recommendation would be the blue line to mark the shortest way to run the marathon. It represent 3 minutes for me in my final marathon time.

Great race with nice atmosphere and organisation. The only downside was the long queues to the toilets before the race. But I went a bit further under the Tokyo Government building where you didn't have to stand in line for 30 minutes. Otherwise top three of the marathons I've done. Love it!

For me...was the perfect race by the point of view of personal result. And amongst the various marathon I partecipated to...the best in terms of organization and atmosphere. Japaneses give their personal touch to this event. The course is fast and when it comes the toughest time of the race, people along the course really helps you to get to the finish line. My personal suggestion to who will participate in future to Tokyo Marathon? Go to toilet before the race: there are plenty of toilets along the course, of course, but some of them are really far from the running course... ;-) One might lose lots of time.

The finish of the race was an absolute shambles. 30 minutes on a shuttle bus from the finish to baggage area was not acceptable. No finisher photo available.I found the course very boring, with a number of out and backs. Many areas with no support, including between 40 and 41km when you need it the most.

Hey there, the Tokyo marathon has over 300,000 applications with only 36,000 being allowed to run. You can guarantee yourself a place by running a sub 3:30 for women and 2:55 for men. They are yet to announce when the ballot for the non-elite runners will open, however, if you save The Tokyo Marathon on the Lets Do This you will get a notification on when the ballot will open. All the best!
