Was not impressed. Over priced. Nothing at the end other than a bottle of water a banana and a medal. Roads were not closed and felt at risk on certain parts of the course. 50mph roads with a cone to separate you from the incoming traffic. Will never do this one again.

This run was a well organised, very scenic and friendly run. Organisation was great, pre run details sent out were spot on and precise. The drink stations on the way round were plentiful for a very hot day. The local scouts were running one of them and they were great and encouraging. There was also a sponge stop too which I was very grateful for.The run is not on closed roads, however I did not feel unsafe at any time. They are rural roads, the marshals were plentiful and they were giving plenty of warning about both cars and runners as needed. There is a cut off time of 3 hours for the run. There was a fab medal at the end and I did need to see the first aiders at the end who did an amazing job.2 small problems:there was a timing issue so the results were late coming out and then there were some discrepancies. However a quick email and it was quickly rectified. All the photos are free to download, however if you are a slower runner there isn't many photos and none at the finish line. The person who finished about 2 mins in front of me was the last person to be photographed. I finished in 2hrs 40, well within the time limit.

    • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

people have left reviews about this being a flat course, which it is, well relatively! there are 2 quite steep small hills to which the decents are pretty short, and for the rest of the course it felt like I was continuously running up hill with long very gradual inclines. maybe just me, it was quite hot too , but just don't expect a totally flat course
    • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

Very warm but a nice run. Atmosphere was ok, but most crowds had cleared when the half marathon runners had finished. As an overall run, I'd say 8 out of 10

    • Did the Middle in 2018

I think the organisers should've said the swim MAY be non wetsuit. I brought mine with me just in case but lots didn't. There wasn't much support from Marshalls on the bike route, one on a tight corner sat in his car the whole time literally paying no attention to the race. Another I told a competitor needed assistance, the Marshall didn't seem to know what to do. To top it all off the run was over a mile short? Couldn't we have added an extra lap?
    • Did the Sprint in 2018

Very late start meant family hanging around longer also messed with pre race nutrition. Transition not very organized with regards to bike racking. Very poor.
    • Did the Olympic in 2018

The note about it being a non wet suit swim was confusing and if you had said it 'may' be a non wet suit swim then all those who didn't bring theirs may have done, I did have mine.

    • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

Atmosphere and crowd participation was fantastic, weather was too hot but if you have a race in July that is to be expected. Forty minute delay was very disappointing, people who don't mind the heat will forgive that as it was the first event but not if it happens again. My son , daughter and myself all measured over 13.1 miles ( our sat navs had it 13.17 to 13.20 miles) this is not a complaint I just wondered if you are confident you measured the course exactly.
    • Did the Half Marathon in 2018

the race was delayed by nearly an hour which made the heat nearly unbearable during the long shadeless stretches. water was given in cups which is horrible as you can't carry it with you. but have to drink it on the spot. the first water station gave out water with a very weird lemony taste to it, without saying it maybe wasn't even water. the water stations with cups weren't great organised as people shouted last minute which side was water, which were sport drinks, but by then it was too late to get in lane. thankfully some visitors hosed us down so we stayed cool. the delay was a massive game changer causing lots of discomfort under the given (stable for weeks) weather conditions the race should have been cancelled. the delay caused parking fees as well.

The Kenilworth Half Marathon route is an undulating out and back course in the town centre and along quiet country lanes with the first and last part on the Town main street. Although there are several small hills, many runners have obtained PB times on the course.

The course has a rolling road closure in place.

    • Did the event in 2018

This was a will-organised event which seems to attract a lot of local club runners. Going through the castle at the beginning is cool and the rest of the course is mostly an out and back along closed rural roads. There is a bit down residential streets on the way in and out of the town.

It's a hilly course so not one for PB-hunters. Plenty of volunteers at the water stations and a heavy first aider presence.

The medal was decent and chunky and we also got a reasonable long sleeved technical top.

    • Did the event in 2018

This was the first time I had done this race as it formed part of my training for the Berlin Marathon which is 2 weeks later. It was easy to find not being local to Kenilworth and the race instructions had been sent a couple of weeks before indicating that all the car parks are free which is an added bonus. I arrived about 7:50 so about an hour before the race was due to begin and I managed to get the last car park space right in the town centre. My advice would arrive 20-30 mins earlier to make sure as otherwise, it could lead to time being wasted looking for a car parking space. Finding and getting my race number from registration was a breeze as it's at the local Holiday Inn which is situated near to the start of the race and right near where I had parked :)So the race began at 9:00 which is nice and early and with the weather being very hot it was nice to know that I would be done before 11:00 baring any disasters to myself on the course. It is an out and back course and I can only describe it as undulating as with every up comes a down. This is pretty much along the entire route so if you are after something flat then this isn't the race for you. I enjoyed the hills and being in the countryside it provided beautiful scenery with all the roads on the course being closed. A water station was every 2.5 miles and they were bottles, not cups!! A bonus for any race! You finish and start in the town centre and get a nice downhill sprint finish once you've rounded the clock tower. At the finish, I received two goody bags including the bespoke medal and a long sleeve technical t-shirt. Overall this was a really enjoyable race and well worth the £25 entry fee!
    • Did the event in 2017

it wasn't until I checked my garmin post race that I realised there was no flat on this course... but it was epic!! From start to finish this was so wonderfully organised... loads of local club runners there which had the capacity to make Justin average non club running jo very scared... all I had to do was stay ahead of the hubby whom was going at the pace he would be pacing the GNR at to get a PB. Well I got so distracted by the course and the views I forgot about it!,  the stations were vottles not cups and cups and marshals great. the finish was lovely and the medal mint!! And a mars bar to boot in my goodie bag!, well done kenilworth running club!,

A really nice summer route that is mostly flat. We were lucky enough that the weather was perfect for the 7am run. There was a great turnout for an (almost full) loop around the reservoir. Unfortunately DPD had let the race organisers down and the t-shirts hadn't arrived but I organised for mine to be sent on. The medal is a nice medal and the goodie bag had water, chocolate and haribo in what more could you want before heading to Parkrun.Overall great little summer route that I would definately consider doing again next year.
    • Did the event in 2018

The concept is simple, a 7 km race at 07:00 (and if you're up for it another at 19:00 \ 07:00 pm) on the 7th day of the 7th month at Severn Trent's Draycote water. Hence Seven @ Severn. This year it was a warm Saturday morning, and a great turnout for the 07:00 race. 341 runners. The Race Organiser has a well established routine at it's Draycote races. So turn-up, park, pick-up race number, warm-up, run, collect medal etc.I've done a few races at Draycote now, and there was a special feeling about this 07:00 race, no doubt helped by the sun, the temperature etc.The course is a partial lap of the reservoir, so there's a short walk from event HQ to the start and then the familiar lap. There was a drinks station part way round, water from cups. And drinks available at the end. A nice medal in the shape of a 7 (what else). Unfortuantely DPD had let the organsiers down and there were no tees at the morning race, but I collected mine in the evening and I understand that they were prepared to send to people who left their address. For those who've never been, there's plenty of parking and toilets at the visitor centre which also has a restaurant. There's also a playground suitable for younger kids if they want to tag along.

This is the second year that I’ve run both races i.e. the 7am and the 7pm race. The field was larger, this year, owing to the fact that the 7/7 was a Saturday. There is very little to criticise about this event. The organisation is excellent. The venue is picturesque, with a slightly undulating route. The medals are excellent quality and the t shirts are decent enough.I really enjoy this race and look forward to next year!

Great event, and a good medal, shirt and goody bag for £15 so well done for that one!

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the course, there are few crowds around the majority of the course, and it can get lonely if, like me, you aren't the fastest runner in the world.

ALL the marshals and volunteers are lovely and so supportive. I have registered to do another 10km and I'm sure I'll be back again and again.

Cracking medal at the end too. Definitely recommend.

Only signed up for this a few days ago as wanted to test where my running is after my ironman and getting back into it. And got a PB!Draycote Reservoir is a lovely place to run around. The registration was easy and you had access to the toilets and cafe as they opened up early for us. The course is a 2 and a  bit laps round the reservoir on tarmac road. It is undulating in parts and these a short sharp hills with nice downhill to get you back up to pace.  Basic water station at every 2.5 miles. There are a small amount of marshalls but as there was mile markers and signs there was no chance of going wrong. You get a print out of your chip timing as well. This one would be ideal for wheelchair users as well. Goody bag. Drink..water..cereal bar..medal.. and a bright yellow t shirt. Which is handy for the winter. For £12. You get a lot for your money.. more than you get for races that cost 5 times that amount. One I would do again!

Whilst there isn't a lot to say about the event, everything I can say is positive.Cheap entry fee (£12- £14)The course is simple, all on tarmac and slightly undulating in places, so it doesn't get boring! The views around the reservoir are very nice too. The race HQ abd facilitirs were close to the car park, which is always a bonus for post-race tired legs.Once you've finished, you get a medal, hi-vis t-shirt and goody bag - which is a lot more than I've had in other events where I've paid a lot more to enter! I wasn't holding my breath for a good performance today, but ended up with a new distance PB so pretty happy with that! Will definitely do this event again!

    About the event
    From the organiser

Regarded by many as Britains premier Ultra, this is a 145 mile continuous race from Gas Street Basin in the Centre of Birmingham, to Little Venice in the heart of London. Run entirely on the waymarked Grand Union Canal Towpath, the easy to navigate, and relatively flat route, takes runners through a variety of urban and rural scenery there should be something for everyone.

This is a race organised by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts. It is definitely old school; definitely low key, and definitely a long way. There are no entry qualifications (other than that you must be over eighteen and willing to give it a good try) so runners of all abilities are welcomed. Entrants should, though, be aware that they must be able to maintain a rate of progress in line with an overall time limit of 45 hours.

It's a ballot to get in, typically register interest 1st July and then names out of a hat.  Approx 100 runners take to the start line every year to run from Birmingham to Little Venice in London. This race is an epic, both in terms of distance and the experience. Previously runners and crew will wax lyrical about the old school feel of the event, a shared experience where everyone becomes family. Most runners travel up on Friday and register in the Travelodge reception for the race then meet up in the pub opposite for beers and food. Then up early for a 6am start at a side street in Birmingham.I've run three 100 milers all by Centurion prior and they have a similar small and friendly feel, but aid stations here are much more spread out (13+ miles) so need to carry a bit more fluid and food with you. Also worth the £10 deposit for a waterways key so you can access the taps on the canal.Getting access to your drop bag at all checkpoints is good so you can run very minimalistic to start with and layer up, pick up headtorch etc later on.  Also pack some battery packs to charge watch and phone etc.I'd recommend having an emergency pot noodle or something in the drop bag in case you don't fancy the food on offer. Also recommend carrying cash and debit card in case you want to stop at pub or cafe on route.Navigation is pretty easy, if you look on Facebook group there is a files section to help judge pacing and has the idiots guide to directions, it's basically a single side of A4 with about 30-40 turns on, most are a simple as "Bridge 86, cross to Left Hand Side". The route itself is unmarked unlike Centurion events. One navigation tip is to double check bridge numbers. Newer bridges are often added on route and then have a suffix letter, therefore if you’ve just passed bridge 78 don’t assume the next is 79, if it looks fairly new and shiny it may well be 78A so not the one you’re after. You’re allowed buddy runner from Stoke Bruene and I would recommend them if you can sort some. The race gets very spread out at night and especially for women I would say either grouping up with another runner or having a buddy is a good safety tip. Also stops you walking in the canal when tired! Also don’t underestimate how cold it can get at night. Most will be running very slow over night and generating little heat. I ran in 2018 during a heatwave, think about 28degC in the day but at night still needed three layers to keep warm and had a spare longsleeve base layer in a ziplock bag in my race vest as a backup. If you’re wondering if the race is for I would recommend either volunteering at an aid station of seeing if anyone needs a buddy runner (not allowed to call them pacers) to get a feel for the event. It’s very low key, understated but brilliant.Full blog here -https://atkosite.wordpress.com/2018/05/31/grand-union-canal-race-gucr145-beer-fuelled-ultra/

2017 was the 2nd time I have taken part in this race. I, like everyone that enters this iconic race, fell in love with it last year despite getting to 133 miles right on the cut off and not finishing. The comaraderie amongst the runners and organisers is fantastic and completers of this race even describe each other as 'GUCR family'. The entire route is canal/river side, extremely scenic in parts other areas being very industrial harking back to the 1800's. Navigation is very easy, it is a flat path if occasionally rutted on the mud/grass sections. Checkpoints are generously stocked with all sorts of snacks, hot/cold food and drinks. This is a tough race but one that any entrant would never regret entering. An existential experience that'll never be forgotten.

This is my 4th (I think) time of running this race. The course is fast, but does have a nasty uphill finish. It was a really hot year this year, so not good for PB setting and with the 10:30 start (and later for some waves), it was getting really warm!!The goody bag included leaflets and water with a couple of small chocolates, and the medal was the worst yet. Great Run need to step up with what they charge, I'd rather a banana than all the leaflets that went in the bin!!
    • Did the event in 2018

Since this was my first official running event, the course as a whole was perfect. Majority of the course was on levelled-ground, with inclines on the start and end of the course. The welcoming atmosphere and the music bands played an excellent part into motivating the runners. For those who want to start running, I would suggest for the Great Birmingham 10k to be your first event. What I was really impressed is how it was all organised. Giving people information leading prior to the event such as road closures or anything else of importance gives people plenty of time to prepare for how the day turns out i.e. hot weather. One thing I could suggest is more water stations as having one at the halfway point of the course isn't a good idea for the less-experienced runners. Having a water station at 2.5km, 5km and 7.5km would give runners more options whether or not they need a drink. The cooling shower at 6km is an excellent addition to the course, particularly if the weather is hot. I will definitely take part in this event next year. It's in my hometown and I couldn't be prouder joining the masses and representing Birmingham.  I would like to say thank you to the Great Run Company and Simplyhealth to making this such a splendid day for me and my family.

A well organised and friendly event. It is not a closed road event but is held nice and early as the name suggests to most road traffic and pedestrian traffic is avoided!

The T-Shirt and medal are great quality and very appealing to the eye also which is always a great bonus. As a local I will attend this event again and would happily recommend to any other runners looking for a 5K in Birmingham.

There is a friendly warm up hosted by the organisers at the start and a nice welcome by them at the finish line also. This was a fast course with only two slight inclines and I was able to PB!

This race started as a 14k and was very successful in the 90s, but over a period of time competitor numbers dwindled and the general consensus from the running fraternity was that it was an unusual distance and perhaps should be shortened to a 10k. I always enjoy this marathon. I think it's quite hilly,  not big hills but lots of ups and downs. It stars about a 15-20 minute walk from the finish but this is not a problem.

well what can I say that was one off the toughest mid distance runs to date . It was ridiculously hot 25•c + P20 sun protection was definitely needed today . As per   Usual the stunning scenery didn’t let us down especially oh a clear sunny not a cloud in the sky kinda day and playing find the shade along the way which was somewhat difficult at times when there was none ahaha . Love this event very well supported throughout and feed stations decently stocked could be better stocked for the later runners at the back just in case . It’s not a flat course nor is it too hilly but it’s a really good course  especially finishing in front off Lichfield Cathedral.
