It was my first ever race. Loved it! Only thing Id recommend is a healthier food range in the grandstands. It seemed the only food you could buy wasnt exactly sticking with the healthy running theme.

Loved the race. All the family took part includes a 5k, 10k, half and full marathon. 10k was very hot and tricky running back down the promonade. Great atmosphere and a good event for all of the family.
  • Did the event in 2018

This was my third time of running this half marathon, and once again no complaints. It's a road/path course and flat most of the way, with just slight inclines in the second half of the race. Good supplies of water every few miles.Support on the course is thin, so some may like their own music to listen to. It's right along the sea front and this can bring some inclement weather. This year it was cold, wet and windy, but last year it was warm and sunny. Be prepared for all eventualities.A straightforward run with no hick ups. FCR events are always pretty good in my opinion. A good medal and t-shirt at the finish, with chip timing as standard.Give it a go, you'll probably enjoy it and may even PB.
  • Did the event in 2018

FCR Events have been recommended in the past, and this is the first one I have done. Registration is simple and the company offer various events all year through their website. I got to Blackpool early and found a car park close to the start line, which was a bonus after running 26.2 miles....The Marathon and Half Marathon started at the same time, but in opposite directions and was well sign posted. The race went along the promenade from the north end of Blackpool, past the Tower, attractions and the Pleasure Beach. You then turned around and ran back along to Bispham, then back again. The added bonus is that the event had a full road closure along the front so the course was traffic free. The support was quiet early on, (started at 09:30), and it was raining. Crowds steadily got busier and the weather slowly improved. The last few miles was run in glorious sunshine and was actually quite warm. Upon finishing, you were handed a bottle of water, banana, chocolate, tshirt and a medal. All in all, it was a great event and I will certainly look at doing more FCR events in the future. PS: The medal is a cracker!

  • Did the event in 2017

For the second time on the trot the sun was shining on Blackpool.I have already reviewed last years so wont rehash the same things again. The exact same course was used as last year. But i did mention that last year there was only 1 water staion at just after the half way stage this year there was another on the way down. Still plastic cups & not bottles.Marshalling was good, road closures went well.Support wasnt as good as last year with not that much on the course but packed at the finish. No shirts given away this year with a replacement headband instaed altough the organisers didnt acknowledge this this omitted that there was ever a t-shirt & just said they were giving away a headband.Headquarters at the Savoy were excellent as well.Medal was the same as last year but thr trainer was different colour.
  • Did the event in 2017

This is the first time I have run this race, registration was simple as everything was sent in the post, so all I had to do was turn up and run. (Same day registration was available in the Savoy hotel which acted as race HQ)Parking was quiet easy, there is a small car park next to the start but plenty of on street parking around. The start area was booming with local radio providing tunes and encouragement, plenty of portaloo's around and also toilet facilities in the hotel. The course starts at The Savoy hotel and is an out and back route along the Promenade, turning just after the pleasure beach. Water is available just before 5k and is in plastic cups.I really enjoyed this run and would certainly come back,  fantastic value event at only £10.50

Bloody amazing day out with Shell! If you’ve not attempted this gigantic lump of a race then you’re needing to reset you’re priorities.

It’s tough, lumpy (6 times lumpy) with amazing views (past the mist) and cracking camaraderie!

Get it booked. In fact get the whole 5 days in the calender.

  • Did the event in 2018

It's a tough, challenging marathon. Very technical terrain - choose your footwear carefully. I went with massive cushioning for the rocky downhills 'cause I love those and needed to take advantage of them. Anything minimal will leave you tip-toeing those sections but maybe more sprightly up the climbs. It's a half mile long. Aim to run steady, even laps and save enough for the 3.5 road/trail leg back to HQ if you're running throughout the week - completing the 5 laps can feel like "I'm done" - but the run back can feel a very long way.
  • Did the event in 2017

I entered this event after completing the Bolton Hill Marathon. Despite an injury I still took part with some thanks to a generous cut off time. It's one marathon a day across 5 days. Complete one, two or all five! The event had a new HQ with loos, changing facilities etc. A canteen with hot drinks and food and free parking. The route was well marked and easy to follow. There were a few marshalls but the main crew was at the feed station at the start of tbe lap. No navigation was imo needed. It was a tough course which got tougher each lap! There was bling with the option to buy a tee. Unfortunately no race photography on the first days of event.A great event that you feel you've accomplished something at the end and you could collect all five medals which join to make one.

Initially signed up for this race as a friend wanted to do it however they ended up dropping out however I still decided to take a trip home for the weekend and run it anyway!
Drive to Blackpool was smooth however finding somewhere to park was a little interesting.
When I went to collect my race number there had been an issue with the system when they changed websites however they quickly had me sorted with a new number and I was ready to run. The start was delayed due to traffic issues to make sure runners didn't miss out which was fine however it meant that what was already going to be a hot race was going to get even hotter. There were some pacers dotted about, I was a little disappointed that one didn't turn up for 1h40 even though there was a sign out for one.
The route itself was run up and down the promenade, a few loops to start with and then straight and back in the other direction until doing the loop once more before finishing. It was a bit mentally draining doing the loops and the sun was very hot however there was very little wind which can always be a problem on the coast and the view was very pretty!
Overall a great race for such a good price, good for anyone training for a half marathon or local to the area and wants a nice friendly race with a great medal!
  • Did the event in 2018

After a 3-week holiday of eating and drinking and very little running I guess the last thing I wanted was a 10 mile race the weekend of getting home. But as I am trying to get a race in every month.... needs must.Early drive down to Blackpool and found parking pretty close to the start/registration area. Registration was done on the promenade and was quick and efficient. There had been traffic issues that morning, so the race was delayed whilst the runners were able to arrive. It was a shame about the delay as it was a hot day and only going to get hotter the later we set off.The course was an up down loop kind of affair of Blackpool promenade, was nice to run down the coast line and thankfully it wasn’t too windy (which I believe can be an issue here). It was a fairly easy 10 mile with very little incline. As with a lot of Fylde Coast events it had a team of pacers and we even had race commentary at the half way point and over the finish line.Even early in the day there were a few “characters” about in Blackpool who liked to make comments to runners as they passed, nothing too bad but it did make me aware of who I was running passed. Also towards the end as lunch time approached I was getting very jealous of all the tourists with their finish and chips, I’m sure the smell alone got me to the end!The finish area was very well supported and crossing the line I got my medal, water and a snack. You don’t get loads with Fylde Coast running events but for the price I always find what you get reasonable. They provide some of the best medals out there as well.Following this race, the wife and I made the decision to become FCR members. The events are well run, friendly and very inclusive no matter what your standard.

Did this race today. First time I've done it and the first time I have ever ran on sand. Only 112 people did it today mainly due to another race in Blackpool today toward the centre of town. It made no difference though it was a lovely day and lovely race. Everybody was really friendly and helpful and the beach was stunning in the sun. Loved it. Well done

Got an email on Wednesday saying the medals were in danger of not arriving for the race today. Unfortunately they didn't. That didn't bother me as sometimes these things happen. Logistics I suppose. An excellent arranged event starting at middle promenade, lots of people and you run down on a path next to the sea wall upto bispham. Very flat, slight undulating on the way back but nothing that bad tbh. Parking is easy in Blackpool as always. Another great FCR event. Well done

Had a fab weekend, we were lucky enough to get a caravan pitch right next to the finish line which made everything so at hand. The registration was really easy and the officials/marshalls were really helpful. The lake was pretty shallow and had quite a bit of bird muck which stunk, other than that everything was great and can't wait for next years event.

southport Triathlon has quickly become one of my goals of my year, absolutely love racing locally and the fact this is one of British triathlons premier events offering qualifying for European championships etc (not that I was anywhere near the AG team this year) registration was a doddle, and made race day a breeze, the guys at epic events know what they're doing (I know I Marshall for them regularly) and this shows in how easy they make thing a for the athletes. Nice warm swim, albeit in a smelly lake, then a closed road bike leg (who doesn't love that?) and a lovely flat as a pancake run around the lake. I'll be back and hopefully fighting fit next time

A good half marathon. Flat. Decent medal. Easy parking. Lots of water stations. Could do with more loos & some fuel.
  • Did the event in 2018

I attended the Windmill Half on a bit of a whim and although it was a 3 hour drive away, it was good fun.Very well organised, there’s ample parking and the race pack collection was easy and straightforward. The start was good, there were two announcers on the PA system who kept everyone in good spirits and are a credit to the race. The course itself is really flat, however it is repetitive as effectively there are 2 x 2 loops. Myself and other runners near me really struggled with working out the mileage, at some point our garmin’s were nearly a whole mile out, and my mile 5 and 6 were basically signposted 4 and 5. however the signposts 7 to 8 could’ve have been more than half a mile apart so it eventually evened itself out by mile 9ish.  The finish area was really busy, I was pacing a friend at came in at around the 2 hour mark, however by this point a lot of finishers and spectators were crossing over the route. This would have annoyed me if I was going for a PB. The finishers medal is big and blingy, you receive this along with a freddo and a bottle of water. PROSFlatFast (on a cooler day)FriendlyParkingSupport and marshalls Price CONSRepetitiveLack of toilets (portaloos arrive at 9:30)Mileage signs incorrect Busy finish area

My 2nd time doing Windmill Half after taking part last year. Resistration was straight forward with numbers collected from Fylde Coast Runners HQ or on raceday itself. Nice atmosphere pre race.A man & woman on the P.A kept runners & spectators entertained. The race itself is fast & flat on a normal day however the high tempratures made conditions difficult. It’s basically 2x small loops & 2x large loops.Mentally it’s quite challenging because you run many of the paths/roads 3 or 4 times. Seeing Mile #7 marker when you’re on mile 2 is slightly off putting but this is only a minor gripe.Support from spectators was very good, some had hose pipes & wet sponges to cool down runner which was very kind. Marshals were generous in their encouragement.Runners were rewarded with a beautiful, chunky meda, water & a small chocolate bar. Maybe an extra food item for finishers, something savoury might be a good idea?IN SUMMARY...HIGHS: Fast, flat & scenic course.LOWS: The loops aren’t to every bodies liking, especially when you see mile markers that clearly aren’t correct.BOTTOM LINE: This race will suit PB chasers. The medal is beautiful.

Horwich Triathlon

Horwich Triathlon is known as 'The Race To The Pike'. It's one of the oldest triathlon events in the North West, dating back over 25 years. It starts with a 500m pool swim and then a 40k undulating cycle ride, but we save the best bit until the end. The 8.6k run climbs all the way to the summit of Rivington Pike, before descending back to the finish at Horwich Leisure Centre.

We have all ability levels taking part, but it's not for the faint hearted. It's a tough challenge, but that's what makes the event so popular and whilst the run is brutal, it's what makes it iconic. This event is also the EPIC Club Championships, your club can score points by having more competitors in the event and finishing higher up the ranks. The club with the most points wins 1000 to donate to a charity of their choice.

  • Did the event in 2016

I was in 2 monds whether to do this event, specially in light of the horrendous weahter forecast, however, I am so glad I did. They day is extremely well organised from start to finish and I have to give a very special mention to all the marshals. I wouldnt fancy standing round for for 6 hours+ in that weather. It's one thing completing, but the stand around, and still be that encouraging to all athletes is a super human effort. Much Kudos to all. Also, just random people, not even spectators were so encouraging. Lovely people in that part of the World. Walkers, people waiitng for buses, everyone clapped and gave encouragement. Organisation was superb. Only small things that I feel could be improved were:1) The transition area was on sloping grass. Which became very very muddy. It made transition very hard. Supose it would have been fine in the sunshine, but I would have prefered this to be on flat concrete. maybe the car park?2) The timing. I do prefer to have all trasitions seperat ein my time. So Swim, T1, bike, T2, Run. However. It was split into Swim+T1, Bike+T2, Run. I know its only a minor gripe, and may be down to cost, but just my opinion. The run is very off-road and slippy uneven surfaces. This is explained well before sign up and in the welcome pack. Not for the faint hearted (or ankled!).But in summary. Great event. Really really well run and marshaled and hope to be back next year (in the sunshine hopefully)

    Organiser replied:
Transition is now back in it's original position on hard concrete (the grass area was temporary whilst our old area was being sold to new owners).
  • Did the event in 2016

Very well organised, great course with great support. Weather was absolutely horrendous but didn't dampen any spirits. The rain did contribute to a very muddy transition area, which only got worse as the day went on.
  • Did the event in 2016

"The bike and run are a bit hilly" said the lovely poolside marshal giving the pre-race brief. She wasn't wrong. Undulating, challenging and scenic, that's what you're faced with on the bike and run. But let's start with the swim and work through.Following an easy and efficient registration I was guided to transition by ever smiling marshals (not easy on such a cold and wet day) and was soon set up. Happy with my transition area I headed to the pool. Due to the pool and transition being a couple of hundred metres apart the organisers recommmend taking a pair of trainers to leave at the exit of the pool and I must say the organisation and help here are good and a beginner's nerves would be well eased. Twenty lengths in a lovely warm pool and off to T1.T1 and T2 are in the same place and if I had any criticism it would be that it was all a bit tight in here. However, due to the staggered start times it didn't feel too crowded when I was in there. From T1 and out onto the bike route. A tough climb from the off had me looking at my speed and thinking I'd be out there all day. Despite this once I'd reached the top of the first climb and shifted onto the big ring things felt much better. The route is interesting, scenic and in places very quick. I loved it. The final couple of miles are a climb back into Horwich, leaving the legs wearied for the run.T2 was muddier now but not horrible and the run is ahead. A hard, multi-terrain, climb to the landmark pike and an almost vertical final 100 metres to the summit is tough but the pay off is a much easier descent back to the finish.Epic Events had the road closed and finishing beneath the gantry on the road felt great. The weather kept supporters to a minimum but the marshals were friendly and supportive. On a personal note I suffered debilitating cramp at T2 and on and I must thank the marshals for their supportive words leaving for the run and on completion. Thanks!
