  • Did the Lordshill 10k in 2017

I've run this race as an unaffiliated runner in 2014 and again as a member of the club team in 2017. I've been involved with the organisation in 2015 & 2016. I can honestly say this is a fantastic race - a fast & flat course makes it comperitve and PB-ready and the marshals and support are very welcome! The course does have a few sharp turns, and narrows after about 1km, but it is well planned and managed. It is perfect for runners of all abilities, and I would recommend it if you are attempting a PB. This is one of the best road races in Hampshire, and the best summer road 10k in the area.
  • Did the Lordshill 10k in 2016

Really nice race equally suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced runners. Just go and have fun. It's a fast course so worth a go at a PB!!

  • Did the event in 2018

I have never ran in Salisbury before and was here because this was a Wiltshire Road Race League race. Registration was simple and race numbers are posted out well beforehand. Pre Race brief was very informative .
The weather on the day was sunny and hot, so very grateful to the marshalls handing out water. ( cups)
The route is 2 flat , fast laps finishing in front of the cathedral. This is a definite PB potential race. I found that other than the start / finish areas you have very little crowd support . The marshalls were friendly and giving support where needed..
If you are chasing a PB and are after a fast.flat HM, then this is the race for you.
  • Did the event in 2018

Praise where due – the marshalls at Salisbury Half Marathon were the best in all of the races I have done this year (in excess of 16).
That’s no slight on the many fine volunteers at all of the other runs, triathlons and aquathlons. I’m just putting these guys at the top of the pile.
I’ve got nothing for praise for around 99 per cent of the people who make all racing possible but the Salisbury guys stood out.
Why? Quite simply because they appeared to be at every road junction, every twist and turn in the roads, they spurred on everyone, heaped praised on people who needed that extra push and all of them did the job with a big smile.
I even overheard an apology at a water station because they didn't quite get a cup across to a runner fast enough!
A word too for the organisation of the event that was simple, smooth and effective.
And let’s not forget the support from the locals with the supplies of sweets on the course. Oh and the lady who had even cooked up special caramel treats!
And then again at the end where people stayed and ensured that applause wasn’t just for those who came across the line early on!
A civilised, noon city centre start where everyone lined up behind the pacemakers – there weren’t many, but there were enough for those who wanted a guideline.
Out through the winding city roads onto a mostly flat route (a few slopes) with partially closed roads that went into the countryside, looped round rivers and fields and back into the city – tantalisingly close to the finish line – before going back out for a second loop.
Just as you thought you were about to finish it was a trip right round a field to the finishing line.
I don’t really like two loop races but I think I will be back to Salisbury quite simply for all of the reasons above. Oh and the great medal and quality shirt too!
No one is perfect. Some come close...
  • Did the event in 2018

    Brilliant event
It keeps getting better each year.
    Luckily the weather was great.
If you want a flat and fast half marathon then this is great

  • Did the event in 2016

Very good value for money and great location on the beach. Transition was very cramped though (too tight to push bikes between racks if there were other people around).Could have done with some extra signage on the bike at the roundabouts and run out and bike mount lines weren't very clear or marshalled.Good friendly, simple race but slightly reliant on the racer being prepared and knowing what they should be doing and where to go.
  • Did the event in 2014

I completed this race (supersprint distance) twice in 2014. The first of the races, the waves were really choppy with 2-3ft swells and made the swim very difficult to navigate. by the time I had got on the bike, I was feeling a little queezy from all of the motion and salt water I'd consumed. The bike course is relatively flat (barring the initial climb) and the road is a little bumpy but fast nonetheless. You ride out to Southbourne, loop around a made made roundabout and head back. Catch the right conditions and it's a pleasant ride along the cliff. The run is an out and back route along the beach front. There was a gatorade station at the half way point (or 1/4 and 1/2 if doing the sprint distance). Quite a quick and very flat run.Overall, very well organised and nice morning challenge before everyone else gets up. Be mindful that there is limited car parking so arrive early otherwise you may miss out!

  • Did the event in 2018

The first thing to say is that the organisation and atmosphere instilled by Race New Forest, is so friendly that for that reason alone I would like to race here again. The course is utterly beautiful, but not for the faint-hearted! It is also not a standard distance for an Olympic triathlon, with a shortened 1.1km swim, followed by an advertised 1km run to transition (Garmin measured it is 1.6km!), 33km bike and a 9km run. The bike course is on open roads through the New Forest, but due to the early start, few cars were encountered - mostly cows, donkeys and horses! The run was altered due to forestry works, meaning that it was a 2 laps of an out-and-back... up some massive hills! It was also quite rocky underfoot in places, which would not be enjoyable to those not used to running off-road. The only possible downsides were the lack of support of feed stations (only one water station on the run) and the incredibly early start! Big wins after the beautiful course itself and great atmosphere were a good quality t-shirt and solid medal.Race New Forest events = highly recommended!
  • Did the event in 2015

A very well organised local event. Routes are clearly marked, marshalls are clued up and being an event without 100s of other participants you really feel welcomed and valued. spectating is easy as swim, transition and run are all very open. Oh and that 1km from the lake to T1 always keeps things interesting! This goes for the whole of Race New Forests race calendar and are a regualr in my race schedule.

Back again at Sturminster Newton for the 3rd year in a row and this year it was a hot one. This year was the 10th anniversary of this event and to commemerote there was a really top quality tech tee in the welcome pack as well as fireworks (in the daytime but hey, go with it!).A travelling folk band followed us round this year, stopping off at various points, are were a welcome lift in the heat. As usual the organisation was great and the marshals superb. The two drink drops at 20 and 30K were very welcome this year. I had  500ml of tailwind at each and needed every drop on the day. What keeps me coming back? It's a small field (max 450) a lovely setting and really, really friendly.

This is about as far away a you can get from the big city marathon experience while still being on tarmac. I entered this race due to dropping out of Brighton with illness. I didn't want to waste a whole winters training so this was the closest option. There is a field limit of 400 and it's entirely on a first come, first served basis. The price is reasonable at £33.00 for affilliated runners, £36 for non affilliated. The race is entirely on road bar the final half mile, none of it closed to traffic. No headphones allowed because of the traffic. It was a nice sunny morning but not overly warm (around 10° but climbed a bit higher later on) and barely any wind. Drove up early to the school where registration was. There was plenty of parking for all.Registration was easy and what I particularly liked was the facility to have your own drinks available at two points on the course. Less to carry if you want your own sport drink and it makes you feel a little bit like a proper athlete! The start is very near the school so I sat in the changing rooms listening to my pre-race playlist to keep warm until around 10 minutes to go. Warmth and indoor loos - heaven! The start is on a short hill but soon levels out. The race isn't chip timed but due to the size of the field every is over the line in around 30 seconds. The route is well signed and marshalled but you do need to keep an eye out for cars. It's fairly quiet around Sturminster Newton so traffic is not an issue. There are isolated pockets of support around the course but no big cheering crowds and you'll likely find yourself running with just 2 or 3 people after the first couple of miles. It's a very pretty route around the lanes of Dorset. If you love a run in the countryside without getting muddy then this one is for you.Now the course is not flat and there are a few short, sharp hills dotted around that can sap your legs a bit. 8.5 miles and 19 miles are the worst. In total I registered around 590 foot of climb. There are plenty of drinks stations and a great selection of snacks and cake at the later ones. The bottle drops are well organised with your drinks arranged in expected finish time sections to make them easier to find. I really liked this touch. The finish itself is along what used to a railway line. Although straight, flat and only a half mile long it is a bit stony so beware as with tired legs and feet it's not a forgiving surface. When you finish there are further drinks and snacks available and also a welcome free mini bus shuttle to take you back to the school. It's not far but it is up a hill and the last thing you want to do is walk a hill after 26.2! Again, another great touch. When you get back to the school there is a hog roast and the opportunity to shower and change.I really, really enjoyed my day. My entire training had been geared to going sub 4 for the first time and I was so disappointed to not be able to make Brighton. This course is a lot more testing than Brighton so I knew it would be a push. After the hilly section at 19 miles I did slow down but I was hopeful I would have enough in the bag before then. The last two miles hurt, but for me they always do. I was delighted when I finally finished in a gun time of 3:57:47.I never envisaged my first sub four being anywhere else other than at one of the big city events. I am so glad it was here instead. It meant a whole lot more to me to do it here without the crowds. This event wll always be special to me for that reason. I'll treasure the flying pig medal.

this was a brilliant event! Friendly organisers, awesome marshals, beautiful course! This was my first middle distance triathlon and I think it was perfect! The course briefing was reassuring, encouraging and honest and all involved in the process were very friendly. I was very nervous about the swim but I think I enjoyed that part most! I will definitely return!
  • Did the event in 2016

You can't ask for a better setting than the New Forest and River Beaulieu to race in.Organisation / Registration was easy and the race brief on Saturday afternoon was very informative and covered all that you'd need to know for the big day.We were lucky with the weather, a little fresh at 06:00 but the water temp was nearly 16 degrees and made for a pleasant swim. Cycling in the Forest at 07:00 was really scenic, little traffic about and only the odd pony or cow to steer around. The run loops were easy to navigate with the only tough bit being the run up from the river towards the finish line, knowing that you had to do that at the finish was tough on the mind though. The marshals were fantastic on the whole course, with clear directions and signs in all the relevant places although I know of one person that did an extra 18km on the bike! The only down side / negative was the lack of feed stations on the bike leg. Although I understand the rationale behind this and was able to take sufficient 'stuff' to keep me going. All in all a fantastic event, well organised and I'll be looking at doing this event again, along with a number of my fellow Bayside Tri team mates.

hard to find the pacers both 2017 and 2018, race start was easier to find in 2018. parking ok, easy to get out the town after the race, more water is needed after the bridge!

This was my first race! I really enjoyed it. Great organisation, brilliant marshals and volunteers and the local support was amazing too. The Itchen Bridge was my favourite part of the race. Fab medal and race shirt and a bonus banana at the end. Loved it!
  • Did the event in 2018

This is the first time I have ran around Southampton do I chose the half marathon to gauge the route. Booking process & startI found the booking site easy to use and I later found out that entries could have been upgraded to the full marathon until 3 days before the event. This is the first event I’ve heard of doing this; a nice touch. The start was a bit weird, I didn’t know what was going on nor could I see the pacers. It was forecasted to be a hot day so I wanted to keep a pacer in sight so I kept to the plan without overheating. Turns out that the pacers were wearing an orange t shirt and they were all at the front to start. With the amount of people attending, I believe that the pacers should have been spread out amongst the crowd; this would have meant that the faster runners wouldn’t have had to weave past a few extra people whilst the slower pacers were getting into their rhythm. The route & raceThe route was quite undulating and had various interesting views including running through the football ground, Itchen bridge (twice!!) and a couple of parks which towards the end was a welcome bit of shade.Overall During the race I heard complaints from other runners that there were not enough water stops which I have to agree with. On a cooler day then the planned amount would have been fine but due to the temperature and the build up of heat from the previous days, an extra water stop or two should have been factored in. The mist machine on the course was a nice touch though. The locals were brilliant, and to the people with garden hoses and water guns, whoever you are, thank you!The medal was a good size and the T shirt was nice too.I would do this race again and maybe with a bit more training, may do the full marathon.

I was blown away with the quality of this!!! The infrastructure and capacity is all there for this to become a huge event. Fantastic race village, gorgeous route, plenty of lovely marshals, all on closed roads with exceptional support from villagers and locals. Fantastic water stations (mini-picnic stations!), quality medal, decent t-shirt...... This is a tough marathon, with a fair bit of elevation but a joy to run due to the wonderful support. I would highly recommend it, and will be back for 2019.

I did the Casterbridge Half. Starts from the same place as the full, but an hour later. What a race!  I've never run do many hills in my life. Definitely challenging but the scenery was amazing. Lots of local support in the villages and well marshalled. Mile 7 on the half/20 on the full takes you into the love station. Basically you run through a farm. In it is a band, free bar!, soft drinks, all types of nibbles and people hugging you with wet sponges to call you down! Probably spent a good few minutes here but I needed it. After that, more hills! The last few miles were hard. I admit to walking quite a bit. Massive hill in the last mile, then down hill to the finish. Cracking medal, technical t shirt and lovely party atmosphere at the end. Plan on doing it again next year, but I'll need to train harder!

In all honestly, a great race, the difficulty of terrain made it hard for a first timer to be sure of hhere way at times but the venue is difficult. Safetly, roads wise was no problem but the goats trail can be treacherous, again that would take away the point of the course. Saying all that, me entering next year, definitely. Friendly people, great views on the course and the organiser was there to shake your hand at the finish line to congratulate and chat with all runners (very nice touch). The medal was not really advertised heavily so I did wonder but its a top quality medal and value for money on this course is up there. Very good race guys, brilliant. This was one of our running clubs championship races so there was a good turnout from our club.Registration was simple and hassle free. The race brief was done on the start line. The lure of this race was the "fast flat course". This is a 2 lap course which was as advertised fast and flat. The first part of the course was through the nature reserve before heading in to some residential roads and then heading along the coast road to complete the first lap. This is definitely a quick course, I hit the 5k mark at pb pace. I managed to keep a good pace for the 2nd half and got my pb. There was water at the finish and also a t-shirt for the finishers instead of a medal. Being fussy I'd rather collect medals than tshirts. All in all a very good event to shoot for 10k pb. Will be back next year

loved it despite the 25 degree heat, great marshalls, interesting course and will be back in 2018.

I love the New Forest 10 and for many, many reasons. I hope after reading this you'll want to pop down to this part of the world and give it a go.ProximityThe fact it's close to me is a real bonus. I have to travel a reasonable distance for most races so having one that I can drive to in 20 minutes is great. Of course this cannot possibly apply to all of you so I better give you a few more reasons why you should run this race.LocationIt's in the heart of the New Forest. Being mostly on wooded trails, with some road sections, it's just a lovely place to run in. You'll see plenty of wildlife around you on your round the course. An early arrival is advised as this part of the forest can easily get congested with cars, particularly heading into Lyndhurst. If you're local you know to avoid the worst of the traffic and travel the back roads. Happy to let anyone know the quicker routes to take to the start. If you love city running this won't be for you but I urge you to try a trail run.The start itself is located at New Park Farm where the New Forest Show is held. There's plenty of parking and it's well marshalled.Race DayBeforehand there is a chance for the kids to run either a half mile or a mile race. After the 10 mile has started there is also a 10 mile race. It's only £1 to enter the kids’ races and they get a medal - excellent value for them and a good warm up for you if you go round with the younger ones. Some of them are pretty quick too! There are some concessions around at the start and some stalls and a bit of stuff for the kids to do. Plenty of loos as well. The start itself is on grass so if it's wet take care for the first few hundred yards. The courseIn the 3 years I've been running this the course hasn't changed. It's not pancake flat but there are only a few rises and no challenging hills. It's not technical at all so don't expect rutted tracks, this is mostly on well-maintained gravel based forest trails. After the start it only takes about half a mile before the course becomes less congested so if you are a quicker runner, get nearer to the front or you might meet some mobile roadblocks! As mentioned you start on grass but it's not long before you get onto trails and are in the woods. Most of the race is on these wide trails. After a couple of miles you'll get to the road section which only lasts for a mile and a half before you are back on the trails again. The road is not completely closed to traffic but most cars are held back and do comply. You may get one or two that drive through but they are the exception. But for this reason headphones are banned. This year I had to catch up with a guy, who was oblivious to the car approaching from behind because he had earphones in, and tap him on the shoulder to warn him. He then moaned about the driver but really if he'd followed the advice given he'd have heard his fellow runners shouting the warning. Some people eh.After leaving the road, which you cross further on, you are on trails the rest of the way. Halfway is about the highest the course gets but as the overall elevation is only 426 ft (according to Strava).Even on a hot day, which it was for the 2017 race, there is plenty of shade in the woods. There are 3 well manned water stations on the way round if you need it. Water is given in plastic cups. The finish is back at New Park Farm, retracing your route for the last half mile. Take a little care at the finish as it is on grass.MarshalsThere are marshals at key points throughout the course, guiding you down the right track or through open enclosure gates. Crucially they are also at the two road crossing points. They're all very friendly and encouraging.Local supportDon't expect any crowd support other than your fellow runners at the finish. There is no crowd here. You may see some New Forest ponies glance in your direction, but they are usually unimpressed! The blingOne of the things I really, really like is the bling. No ordinary race medal here; what you get is a horse brass. You can buy a horse brass strap to mount these on for a very reasonable price in the registration tent. It's friendly and it's cheapThe race has a very low key friendly vibe about it. There were around 660 finishers this year. And you can tell its run by a running club, for runners, by runners. There's no faff, everyone is happy to help. It's also excellent value. As an accredited runner it's only £17.10My 2017 raceBumped into @Gfra98G before the start. Last time we met was at GSR last year so was good to catch up.I'd certainly enjoyed running here for the previous two years so was looking forward to it again this year. I made a last minute decision to enter as I'm running Race to the Stones 6 days after it. But given the mileage I've been clocking up a gentle 10 miler was just ticking over.I drove there with my daughter and my Dad as she wanted to run the mile race beforehand. Registration for Sasha only took a minute, hand over £1, get a number - simple as.Sasha ran her mile and got her medal - the kids get lots of encouragement. It was a nice warm day but given the temperature at Hampshire Hoppit a few weeks earlier I didn't think it was that bad. Did pass a few people walking in the latter stages of the race though.I started as I said I would, nice easy pace for the first mile. Then as the race went on, I started getting quicker. Was chatting to someone at the 3 mile point and looked down to see it was an 8.22.*sigh*But still, not too fast and I felt comfortable. Mile 4 and 5 were similar. And then the plan fell to pieces.I was feeling great, I love running the course and I just couldn't help myself!Mile 6 went by in 7.31. And all the rest were sub 8 with the last being 7.25. No one passed me after mile 4, no one at all. In the end I think it became a point of pride to make sure no one did.So much for not racing it!And yet I felt okay. I know I'd put a bit of effort in but not top effort. Given my time two years ago was 1.20 (full out effort) and this year I did 1:21 at what felt like tempo. Hopefully a good sign for RTTS.I'll be back for more next year. As I said, I wasn't going to race it this year, but it's one of those courses that makes you want to try hard. I thoroughly recommend you try it.Linky: Website
