I was super excited to do this race. Traveling from Ontario, Canada I had no idea what I was getting into.  I stayed about 1km away from the race start. It started at a cool castle in Carlisle,  it amazes me at the races in the UK how you have to have a mandatory kit! ( we don’t have to do that here in Ontario)  race started and it was great from the get go well signed posted, as I was running I kept thinking when are we going to get to the trails, as before I came over I had watched a lot of videos and thought it was a full on trail race   I must say only about 25% is trail the rest is road  had I know that I would have worn a hybrid shoe  I had full on trail shoes  not the best   On a good point everyone was friendly, we went through some amazing towns with amazing views  I saw a field of poppies, I had never seen wild poppies  The best part was the aid stations OMG! I have never seen aid stations like it  they were stocked with the most amazing food, hot food cold food soup, coffee tea sweets chocolate, potato chips all kinds of stuff, I was worried I may get lost or be lonely but you were never without someone to run with   I miss calculated the Miles , I must say the last 10km I walked  fantastic race, I would do it again  just in the right shoes!

    • Did the event in 2018

For the first running (excuse the pun) of this event it was a success. Despite the early start there was a really good atmosphere at key spectator points and a decent crowd in the stadium as you crossed the finish line. Will be back again next year.

Only criticism would be that the drinks stations weren't spaced out well wit ha big gap between the first and second station.

Other minor thing would be that the fun run was a great idea but having it over 3hrs after the half and 10km started meant that 90% of the crowd had dispersed. Surely this could have taken place inside the stadium either before or even during the main event.

A brand new event from the organisers of Gelt Gladiator... (Obstacle run)As I have family from Carlisle, and the race finished in the stadium of Carlisle United, (the club I support), I was always going to do this race. The course started at the stadium and went into the city centre. Then through the Cathedral grounds and in front of the Castle, before going around the Castle into Bitts Park and along the river. The course then goes north out of the city along closed roads and country lanes. The final 2 miles are through Rickerby Park, across the river and a stadium finish at Carlisle United FC. Along the route were plenty of water stations with music playing and also a band on he route. The goody bag contained bananas, sweets, chocolate, tech tshirt and a fantastic medal. For those who like a PB, this could be a good course to chase it. For others, a very scenic route to enjoy. This is a race that I think will get bigger and better as the years go on - a great first event!

Plenty of parking on site and a great HQ for camping if that’s your thing. Straightforward registration and chance to buy a buff (£7). Beautiful setting for race HQ, the first half dozen miles are track alongside the river which are pretty uneventful, then some short woodland ups and downs and out to first CP at Caldbeck village hall at which you’re very well catered for. A long slow incline out of town and the climbing starts to High Pike which is stunning, then fantastic rolling fell and bogs before dropping down a gill and a long fiddly trail up to Skiddaw House before some really fast downhill trail round the east side of Skiddaw before dropping out at CP2 at Skiddaw car park, which is a little less well stocked. Then the long slog straight to the top of Skiddaw before ringing the bell at the trig, photo, and off down CArl Side track heading SW on a steep scree track before the more technical descent of Ullock Pike. Onto Cp3 at bassenthwaite and then a long boring stretch of farm track and road all the back to Caldbeck CP where hot soup is on offer, before the final bit of the lollipop route back through woodland and then riverside. Back at HQ the fire pit is going and the stone bake pizzas are cooking. Outstanding race
