Very pleasant, well organised sportive. Excellent value for money.  Lovely place to start as well.    Would have liked to have had some flapjack at the end for those of us who don't stop at the feed stations, I missed out and I heard it was ace!   Also, a couple more waymarkers after the feed stations would have been useful.  As so many people stopped to eat, those of us who didn't had a couple of 'is this the right way?' moments as there was no-one around and suddenly no waymarkers!

This run was a well organised, very scenic and friendly run. Organisation was great, pre run details sent out were spot on and precise. The drink stations on the way round were plentiful for a very hot day. The local scouts were running one of them and they were great and encouraging. There was also a sponge stop too which I was very grateful for.The run is not on closed roads, however I did not feel unsafe at any time. They are rural roads, the marshals were plentiful and they were giving plenty of warning about both cars and runners as needed. There is a cut off time of 3 hours for the run. There was a fab medal at the end and I did need to see the first aiders at the end who did an amazing job.2 small problems:there was a timing issue so the results were late coming out and then there were some discrepancies. However a quick email and it was quickly rectified. All the photos are free to download, however if you are a slower runner there isn't many photos and none at the finish line. The person who finished about 2 mins in front of me was the last person to be photographed. I finished in 2hrs 40, well within the time limit.

  • Did the Middle in 2018

I think the organisers should've said the swim MAY be non wetsuit. I brought mine with me just in case but lots didn't. There wasn't much support from Marshalls on the bike route, one on a tight corner sat in his car the whole time literally paying no attention to the race. Another I told a competitor needed assistance, the Marshall didn't seem to know what to do. To top it all off the run was over a mile short? Couldn't we have added an extra lap?
  • Did the Sprint in 2018

Very late start meant family hanging around longer also messed with pre race nutrition. Transition not very organized with regards to bike racking. Very poor.
  • Did the Olympic in 2018

The note about it being a non wet suit swim was confusing and if you had said it 'may' be a non wet suit swim then all those who didn't bring theirs may have done, I did have mine.

I enjoyed this event, I know many people dont like laps as it can be boring, but it has its advantages as you nearly always have company, And easier to pace yourself, the only complaint the car park at 5 pound is a bit much, I managed to pay at reception, but was frustrated at the car park as a debit card was wanted to park as a runner I dont take my cards with me.

Great organisation! Yes the course is a little dull BUT there were toilets every mile, a well stocked feed station with water, electrolytes and food every lap and the course was flat. Perfect for me as a first timer

Another quality event from ITP. A nice rolling route with some challenging climbs around the scenic Rutland water. Having done the ITP Lincoln GP sportives the last 2 years I'd hoped for an equally well organised event and wasn't disappointed. Straightforward registration, good food stops and well marshalled. Suspect I will do this one again in the future!
  • Did the event in 2017

It is only recently that I’ve completed my second long cycling event. I entered the Rutland Sportive as a build up to the Ironman. The course is 105 miles long but you have to cycle 2 miles to get to the start from the official car park, so I’m rounding that up to 109 (that’s crazy maths). I selected that one as the route looked very hilly and would be good training for the Ironman course. I’d competed in other events around Rutland so I knew that it would be lumpy, the locals refer to the hilly countryside in that area as the Rutland ripple. I figured doing some hill work over a long distance couldn’t be a bad thing.Aiming to avoid a bonk I decided to test my nutrition strategy. I’d just been on holiday and read a book by Vassos Alexander, radio sports presenter and self-confessed running addict. He mentioned making his own super food cake which had worked successfully for him over various long distance races, so I decided to follow suit. I’m not sure what his exact recipe was as it wasn’t in the book, but I ploughed on regardless by buying the essential ingredients of bananas, blueberries, eggs, peanut butter and avocado. I then made up the rest myself to add extra flavour. I was quite surprised when I made it that it actually tasted good so decided to take it along on the Sportive. It worked like a dream. I ate a couple of mouthfuls every 30 minutes, plus anything else I managed to pick up at the food stations dotted along the way. Bonk avoided. The course itself lived up to expectations. It was very undulating. A few days before the race a fellow Leicester Tri club member posted on the club forum that he had also entered the event and wanted to know if anyone else was going along. More than happy to have a riding mate I said I’d meet him at the start. I’d never met Lewis, or Coops as he’s known, before the race but it didn’t take long to realise that we were both coming at it from the same angle i.e. nothing too serious, but great to have some company on the way. I think he may have regretted meeting up at one point as he’d only signed up for the 75 mile version. I convinced him to go for the full distance after a couple of hours. I’d found out that he worked for the RAF and that he doing a charity bike ride from London to Paris later in the year to raise money for war veterans. The extra miles were not going to him any harm in preparing for that.It was a great day out. The weather was pretty kind to us, sunny with very little wind. I felt pretty good throughout and went well up the (multiple) hills. Apart from the obligatory sore backside from hours sat on a saddle, I had no ill effects from the ride or my cobbled together cake. The nutrition side went smoothly and my legs weren’t demolished. I don’t know whether I could have run a marathon straight after but I didn’t think it was an impossible task either. Job done. Coops and I went on our separate ways and it was another box ticked in my Ironman preparation.

  • Did the event in 2018

This year was a slightly different course to last year and had twice as many participants, too.The course consisted of circuits of the park, a road section and a canal side section. The course was narrow in parts but this did not cause much of a problem, although my sister was hit rather heavily on the elbow by someone who was pushing through’s mobile phone. The last 100 metres of the race was on rather muddy grass which did slow down any sprint finish. The weather was cold and wet but it was still an enjoyable race.At the end of the race, we were presented with a rather large medal, a banana and some water.I’m looking forward to the Stratford version of the race in September.
  • Did the event in 2018

Second year I have done this event although the course had been altered slightly this year. Its basicly a lap within the Park, a lap on the road running around the edge of the park (one part closed road the second part a coned of lane) along the canal tow path back into the park for another lap back onto the road cut through the park onto the tow path again back into the park for the finish. At the start there is no particular area for different ability runners so you will find yourself either dodging around people or being dodged round by quicker runners but once the first kilometer is out the way things settle down. There is one water station provided at 5k and this year they had mini bottles of water which I liked perfect fit for the hand and not as much waste. Plenty of people at points within the park to cheer you on. Chunky medal at the finish along with water and bananas.

Swim was decent (bit smelly but it's nature) warned on briefing about part of road being broken up so I took the first lap easy(ish) as I wasn't Sure where this was so I was over cautious! (If they new about it maybe posts a warning sign 50 metres before.run course was great except for the little single track just after the water station is a little narrow (it's a squeeze to get past someone) overall it was a great event and I'd happily do it again!!

Raced this event several times now, it's the perfect season opener. Good location with parking, swim is in the rowing lake, which at about 4ft deep so not too cold for the time of year, also giving the nervous swimmers the confidence that they can stand up. Grassed transition area with enough room. Being from West Yorkshire the bike route is flat, :-) but for the rest it's just a little undulating, good route once you get off the main roads, although road surface can be a bit rough in places (2 punctures this year!)  Run is around the lake with a combination of surfaces, again flat.Facilities are good, you can also use the rowing club showers, which is brill when you have a 2 hour drive home. Event is well organised, marshal's are super helpful and plenty of them, bike course especially.Goodie Bag, one of the best. with great T-shirt and best looking medal you'll ever get!

This was my second time participating in the monster mojito triathlon and it is a great event. I entered it originally due to the value for money, as one of the best priced standard distance races around. It is however very well organised event with a great out and back swim course which is great for beginners as avoids too much contact with other swimmers. The run course is also lovely and scenic.
  • Did the event in 2017

A well organised event with plenty of marshalls to help at all key areas/points.  The bike and run courses were excellent, well signed and clear to follow.only things I would criticise would be:1. the amount of weed in the lake, you were dragging it up as you swam, and got it all in your face etc as you went along!2. The medal has no reference on it to what event it was, where or when - this should be included as they are hard earnt and you feel proud to receive it, but if you go back to look at it in the future you would not know where it came from! (I know it is on the ribbon, i would like to see it on the actual medal please!)My wife came and spectated and thought the layout was excellent as she could easily see me exit the water, in transition, leave and return on the bike then see me several times on the run and at the finish.i would definiely consider doing more Monster events in the future!

This was the second time I had run the Sleaford Half Marathon, and I enjoyed it just as much as last year. It is a relatively flat course, with the first and last couple of miles on closed roads, and the remainder on very quiet local single track roads. There are friendly marshals out on the course, mainly from the Sleaford Striders running club who organise the race, and there are 4 water stations which were definitely needed today in the heat. The entry fee is reasonable, you get a nice medal and finishers t-shirt, and there's a home made slice of flapjack when you cross the line. Oh, and an upgrade to race numbers with timing chip built in this year, rather than tying it on to your shoe. Great event - thanks to all the organisers and volunteers!
  • Did the event in 2017

This was my first ever half marathon, and I thought it was a great event. The entry price was reasonable, and the marshals and fellow runners were very friendly. As it was mostly on quiet country roads there are only small pockets of spectators to cheer you on. Overall, though I really enjoyed it and will be back next year.
  • Did the event in 2016

A half is a half right? That depends on how many other factors you're fighting against, that you're unable to control. The Sleaford half is without a doubt a popular event but with a few miles of mud swamps, raging winds and regular inclines, even the most durable runner was going to feel some discomfort in this years Sleaford half.I'll certainly try it again but I might pay closer attention to the weather forecast next time.

This was my first Woodhouse May Day Challenge despite the event being in its 10th year. It’s a small, chip timed race with about 600 entrants split between walkers and runners across the hills and lanes of Charnwood in Leicestershire. It’s slightly more than a half marathon and comes in at 13.5 miles with a variety of terrain but mostly trail. There are two notable tarmac sections, one long uphill inside the first 2 miles and then the long tarmac path that crosses the beautiful Bradgate Park. Getting to the event has to be done by road and there is ample on street parking or you can park in a field provided by the organisers, a short walk from the start. The event starts at the Woodhouse Eaves village hall which is also where you collect your race numbers on the day. Tea and coffee is available for the runners before the off and there is a friendly atmosphere all round. The walkers set off at 8:30am and the runners at 9:30 which means the fastest walkers and runners are coming in at similar times. The organisation was excellent and extra water stops had been added to account for it being the hottest May Day on record. As well as water and juice, there was flapjack, jelly babies and most usefully, buckets of water with sponges in you could use to cool yourself down. The martials were all excellent and allowed us to efficiently cross the few roads that we had to and worked really hard out in the sun all day.The closing stretch of the 13.5 mile course has you climbing up hill back into Woodhouse Eaves and circling around the edge of a field behind the village hall. This is where most of the spectators are and as you cross the finish line they call in your name over the loud speaker: ‘representing Shepperton Running Group, number 17 Jonathan Ashdown’ etc which is a nice touch. There is no medal for this event but there is always a momento, in previous years there have been tshirts, this year it is a soft draw cord trainer bag. Personally I prefer this. Bling is nice but I like getting other things I can actually use. Anyway, the bag is only the start! Staggering weary legged back up to the village hall about 100m from the finish, all competitors receive free food. This year it was a delicious chilli backed potato! There is also an enormous spread of free sandwiches and hundreds of homemade cakes, biscuits and fruit. Tea, coffee, water and squash is all complimentary... but that’s not all! Comllimentary massages for all competitors is a really nice touch and something a lot of people take up. I had one and it was brilliant. They ask if there is a certain area you want them to work on (I had hamstrings) and then they work on each person for 15 minutes or so. There are collection buckets for local charities in the tea room (separate from the massages) but you are under no pressure to donate. There is also a pay as you go BBQ for non competitors which is very reasonably priced. For £18 you struggle to find a better value for money race. It was friendly, fun and a great way to spend the May bank holiday! My thanks go out to the organisers! Highly recommended!!!

I always enjoy this marathon. I think it's quite hilly,  not big hills but lots of ups and downs. It stars about a 15-20 minute walk from the finish but this is not a problem.
    • Did the event in 2018

well what can I say that was one off the toughest mid distance runs to date . It was ridiculously hot 25•c + P20 sun protection was definitely needed today . As per   Usual the stunning scenery didn’t let us down especially oh a clear sunny not a cloud in the sky kinda day and playing find the shade along the way which was somewhat difficult at times when there was none ahaha . Love this event very well supported throughout and feed stations decently stocked could be better stocked for the later runners at the back just in case . It’s not a flat course nor is it too hilly but it’s a really good course  especially finishing in front off Lichfield Cathedral.

A nice event and always well organised. I love the event. I would say however, that the start and the finish are about a mile apart, which is not a problem. I also think it's quite expensive but I think lots of events are expensive. Anyway, I loved it.

my second time at Nottingham sprint and this year it was an ETU qualifier, so Everyman and his disc wheel and pointy helmet was here. The water was lovely and warm, perfect conditions. The organisers do a fantastic job and the set up Is fabulous. The bike course is 4 laps of the 2k lake, so just under 20k. Closed roads, flat and straight...don’t forget to save something in the tank for the 1 loop 5k run of the lake before hitting the red carpet finish.
    • Did the event in 2017

I first raced this event in 2015 as a qualifier and enjoyed the event. The field was much smaller with it not being a qualifier this year, shame as its a great event and run well (like all OSB events).  OSB events always run smoothly and are well organised which is exactly what you want on race day. Swim was chilly (about 14 degrees), one large loop and nice wave sizes so there wasnt as much violence in the swim as most open water swim starts. The bike was 4 laps round the lake, surface isnt great but its still a nice fast flat circuit. The run is a flat and fairly fast but draining when you feel like your not getting closer to the finish as you can see it for almost all the 5km run as its one lap round the lake. Nice atmosphere and the event was run smoothly start to finish despite the awful weather. Also a great event for spectators as you get to see all the swim, 4 times on the bike and can see on the run so get to watch most the race. Would recommend to all ability athletes.

This was my first Tough Mudder - I really enjoyed mixing it up; I usually do more conventional running events so it was great to challenge myself more!  The ice obstacle was the only one I wouldn't love to do again(!) but otherwise everything was doable for me if you attacked it and all worked together.  There were 2 obstacles I genuinely couldn't do as I'm physically not big enough (at 4'10 I didn't have the reach for the monkey bars!)The warm up and start line briefing were great - covered the important safety stuff without being dull, and really set us on our way!  Not the cheapest event but would definitely recommend :)
    • Did the event in 2018

Right first things first, I have been building up to this since November last year. That's a huge amount of time to let the voices in you're head tell you, that you can't do it. Especially from someone that signed up to do it before I could even run for a minute. This race/run/challenge is a huge amount of fun. The scenery is beautiful and yes it's muddy and yes you'll get wet but you will have a smile on your face doing it. The nature of the course and the ethos behind it is that it's not a race and as a result it feels like a collaborative effort between all people taking part to ensure that everyone reaches the finish line. In fact there are obstacles that just can't be done on your own but that in its self just adds to the fun. Overall I would say if your looking for a challenge that's different from the norm then Tough Mudder is well worth the money time and effort.

Completed my 2nd Tough Mudder on the 12th May. This infamous event has, electric shocks and ice baths but the standout element is the teamwork and camaraderie around the course. There is no focus on time. Just having fun and helping other when possible. Over ten miles with some of the toughest obstacles this is no joke. Despite this it's the most fun I've ever had at an OCR race. Highly recommended.

It's intense. I know Tough Mudder isn't traditionally associated with extreme racing but this is genuinely really hard. I made a bit of an impulsive last minute decision to do it so didn't have any of the gear and having the right gear makes a massive difference. 2 main things are a really bright head torch (brighter the better) and clothes that don't get heavy with water (I had cotton tracksuit bottoms and a t shirt - disasterous). Lots of people are kitted up with good lycra and good head torches - that's definitely the way forward. Also the guys who crushed it had support teams there - it's pretty savage going for that long so the support team really does help!!

The Carsington 7+ is a realy enjoyable route, taking in one complete circuit of Carsington Reservoir, to and from the visitor centre.  Don't be fooled into thinking a route by the shores will be easy though, it's deceptively hilly.  There are 3 or 4 steep climbs as the higher level paths are taken, which are very attractive and interesting to run on.The whole event was well-organised from start to finish. 2018 saw a very hot day and the 2 water stations at approxamately 2.5 and 5 miles were much needed.  Finishers received a T-Shirt, bottle of water and an energy gel.  The only negative was the absence of a medal, which has become an integral part of so many events nowadays.  Apart from that, this event is much recomended.

    The Grand Union Canal Race

Regarded by many as Britains premier Ultra, this is a 145 mile continuous race from Gas Street Basin in the Centre of Birmingham, to Little Venice in the heart of London. Run entirely on the waymarked Grand Union Canal Towpath, the easy to navigate, and relatively flat route, takes runners through a variety of urban and rural scenery there should be something for everyone.

This is a race organised by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts. It is definitely old school; definitely low key, and definitely a long way. There are no entry qualifications (other than that you must be over eighteen and willing to give it a good try) so runners of all abilities are welcomed. Entrants should, though, be aware that they must be able to maintain a rate of progress in line with an overall time limit of 45 hours.

    • Did the event in 2018

It's a ballot to get in, typically register interest 1st July and then names out of a hat.  Approx 100 runners take to the start line every year to run from Birmingham to Little Venice in London. This race is an epic, both in terms of distance and the experience. Previously runners and crew will wax lyrical about the old school feel of the event, a shared experience where everyone becomes family. Most runners travel up on Friday and register in the Travelodge reception for the race then meet up in the pub opposite for beers and food. Then up early for a 6am start at a side street in Birmingham.I've run three 100 milers all by Centurion prior and they have a similar small and friendly feel, but aid stations here are much more spread out (13+ miles) so need to carry a bit more fluid and food with you. Also worth the £10 deposit for a waterways key so you can access the taps on the canal.Getting access to your drop bag at all checkpoints is good so you can run very minimalistic to start with and layer up, pick up headtorch etc later on.  Also pack some battery packs to charge watch and phone etc.I'd recommend having an emergency pot noodle or something in the drop bag in case you don't fancy the food on offer. Also recommend carrying cash and debit card in case you want to stop at pub or cafe on route.Navigation is pretty easy, if you look on Facebook group there is a files section to help judge pacing and has the idiots guide to directions, it's basically a single side of A4 with about 30-40 turns on, most are a simple as "Bridge 86, cross to Left Hand Side". The route itself is unmarked unlike Centurion events. One navigation tip is to double check bridge numbers. Newer bridges are often added on route and then have a suffix letter, therefore if you’ve just passed bridge 78 don’t assume the next is 79, if it looks fairly new and shiny it may well be 78A so not the one you’re after. You’re allowed buddy runner from Stoke Bruene and I would recommend them if you can sort some. The race gets very spread out at night and especially for women I would say either grouping up with another runner or having a buddy is a good safety tip. Also stops you walking in the canal when tired! Also don’t underestimate how cold it can get at night. Most will be running very slow over night and generating little heat. I ran in 2018 during a heatwave, think about 28degC in the day but at night still needed three layers to keep warm and had a spare longsleeve base layer in a ziplock bag in my race vest as a backup. If you’re wondering if the race is for I would recommend either volunteering at an aid station of seeing if anyone needs a buddy runner (not allowed to call them pacers) to get a feel for the event. It’s very low key, understated but brilliant.Full blog here -https://atkosite.wordpress.com/2018/05/31/grand-union-canal-race-gucr145-beer-fuelled-ultra/
    • Did the event in 2017

2017 was the 2nd time I have taken part in this race. I, like everyone that enters this iconic race, fell in love with it last year despite getting to 133 miles right on the cut off and not finishing. The comaraderie amongst the runners and organisers is fantastic and completers of this race even describe each other as 'GUCR family'. The entire route is canal/river side, extremely scenic in parts other areas being very industrial harking back to the 1800's. Navigation is very easy, it is a flat path if occasionally rutted on the mud/grass sections. Checkpoints are generously stocked with all sorts of snacks, hot/cold food and drinks. This is a tough race but one that any entrant would never regret entering. An existential experience that'll never be forgotten.
