    • Did the event in 2018

The race started in front of Paignton Pier in front of quite a large crowd and then the route went to Torguay. The course is a 2 lap course which i never like but the event was well marshalled and supported. There was adequate water stations especially on a warm day with bottles of water given and energy gels later on. The course is a little bit hilly in places but enjoyable since you are never far from the Devon coastline. In conclusion a very enjoyable event and i will probabley do next year.
    • Did the event in 2018

This was my very first Torbay Half. I had heard good things from friends who had run it in the past. And as they were running it again this year I decided to join them.Registering for the race online was easy. If you register with plenty of time the race pack is sent out to you.The event itself is well organised, the route is clearly marked and on closed roadsThe race starts in Paignton and you run once around the sea front before heading out towards Torquay. The course is quite undulated but the hills are not too steep so they are pretty manageable.I quite liked the approach into Torquay. Lots of support from the crowd and it was nice to see the big wheel in the background. Once around the big wheel you head back into Paignton. First lap done, ready to start the second lap. If you are not a fan of 2-lap races maybe this race isn’t for you. I know some of my running friends don’t take part simply because of this reason. The crowd in Paignton is out en-masse and they are really good at cheering you on especially when approaching the finish line. The finish line is by the sea. Not many races can say that. It’s great to take your shoes off and jump into the sea to cool off, especially on a hot day like it was this year. Having said that, my friends who have been doing this race for the last 3 years have said that it’s always been sunny and hot on race day.Nice medal, a good finisher t-shirt and a generous goody bag. All in all I think it is a great race and very good value for money – just over £20 if you are a UKA affiliated runner.
    • Did the event in 2018

On Arrival at Paignton station the start line is half a mile from the station next to the peir. Race village and bag drop right on the sea front. When race day come around you all called with plenty of time the start. On the off you have to run once around the sea front before heading out to of town towards Torquay.  There some nice hills to start but not to bad .You get a fast run in to Torquay, once around big wheel you head back to Paignton.  First lap done you repeat the lap. Its great running to the finish line you have so many  people cheering to the end. You get a great medal and finisher shirt and goody bag.  After race some great entertainment in the village and bars. Had great time jumping in to the sea to cool off. Paignton has lots of places to stay and lots of restaurants .Not a bad half  to do.

Starting at the school Sports Club's fantastic indoor 5-lane 25m pool, a 400m (16 length) swim will be followed by a novice friendly, yet challenging, bike course that will take athletes on a 28km reasonably flat route that includes some of the beautiful villages near Taunton. The final challenge is a town centre based 5km run, that includes a lap of the sports grounds of the school and finishes in front of the fabulous main school building.

    • Did the event in 2018

Signed up for this as my first proper triathlon, having previously only done duathlons finding this gem on my door step was a great start.
The tri is based on a private school in Taunton, so as you’d imagine the setting is pretty damn good.
The swim is done in a very well kept indoor heated pool, for a relatively weak swimmer this pool was perfect as it wasn’t the standard 2m in the deep end you often see, so if you’re not a great swimmer this really takes some weight off your mind.
The ride is beautiful, an out and back into the countryside, the only niggle I had was it’s on a live main A road, not too bad overall given the later start but still cars go dodge at times.

The run is a simple 5K from the school around the area and back, a couple hills and a nice river run towards the end.

Overall very good and i recommend to all

This was my first sprint pool based triathlon, and I can see why loads of people race them! It was great fun, I felt very welcom and the organisers did a great job. I highly recommend this event.Loved the finish area and the transition was perfect, no grass in a naturally secure area of the tennis courts.Bike course was 29km a out and back course! A fast and mainly non technical! Only down side is the traffic lights! I got held up there on the way out, but it allowed me time to organise myself.Run was about 200m short according to Garmin butt the loop around the school was great! With one (happy) drinks station this was sufficient. The facilities, Staff, marshals, and supporters were just brilliant! I travelled alone with no support but was made to feel welcome by all, very friendly triathlon. This is a nice triathlon suitable for athletes at all levels. loved the medal really good quality.Thank you to everybody involved! If my 2017 schedule fits I will be back to defend my win!

Essentially a two lap course using the Exmouth Parkrun course along the seafront with a slight diversion to take in a hill. Otherwise very flat. Nice views; a bit exposed if it's windy.

Toilets/changing facilities and ample seafront parking near the start, plus places to buy food and drink.

Chip Timing. T-Shirt (non-technical), water and (fairly basic) medal for finishers.

      Not a lot of spectators.

Enjoyable event and good value; I plan to do it again in 2019.

The title says it all, this stunning route on Dartmoor starts with a long climb up, of course stopping several times to look around and take some photos provided some relief for the legs, then an undualting run along some very boggy "path ways" jumping, slipping, squelching along the bogs, then the Volcano was in sight, a quick climb up to the top, some photos and selfies, before a short drop down, then more bogs, water crossings, a clapper bridge and a short climb up before a nice long downhill section, one final stream crossing a very short climb and a nice long descent down to the finish, good support at the finish, nice medal as well. Pure Trail put on well organised events across Devon and some further afield. Check them out you wont regret it. Highlight of the race for me was the guy in front misjudging a bog and going in up to his middle with a high pitched "Arrgh" sorry but it was funny from my angle.

All races start and finish from Peter Tavy Village Hall with a mass start for each race. You have to finish the first to be on the start line for the second. How much time you have to recover between races is down to the individual. Do you go all out and rest, or pace it out and go for negative splits? Its up to you

Start times are generous to a degree but the cumulative effect of 3 race starts in 5 hours is certain to have an effect on performance. Its a long race broken into 3 faster, shorter events. In itself, this is a new concept and we think its going to be a real test of endurance and tenacity to be the pureTrail Dartmoor 3 in ONE overall winner.

My local marathon and my second time running the route. I’ll continue to support it but not one I’d recommend to those travelling from afar if you are looking for a big event. Pavements and paths can get congested with runners, walkers and cyclists. Quite a small field so towards the end I was often on my own. But for us locals I’d definitely recommend it.
    • Did the event in 2018

Lovely course, well organised event and good value for money. However it was spoiled by very poor quality feed stations- water only, no gels, bananas or anything else. Support along the course was almost limited to marshals only who were excellent. Race briefing was longer than most I’ve come across but failed to mention the 180 degree turn 200 yards into the race which caused great confusion and runners to bump into each other: rest of the course was excellent.

Only 2 Toilets at start for men and women had to share. No isotonic drinks on route on a very hot day. Course not accurate about 800 metres over. No goody bag at finish. Would not recommend. Had to avoid cyclists walkers. Dogs and lead runners coming in other direction. A rip off

The course is an out and back route along the beautiful Plym Valley Trail, surrounded by trees and woodland. There are drink/snack stations at about 3 miles and at the halfway point, then again at the 10 mile point (10miles is the same location as the 3 mile point due to the out and back route). There are also drinks and snacks at the finish line. The organisation is super and the medals from each race in the series join together by interlocking. All finishers also receive a goody bag with post race snacks and water.Davey who organises the race is very personable and an experienced runner himself.Although the course can feel a bit monotonous, it is a beautiful route and there is a great community atmosphere created by the race directors and runners.

    About the event
    From the organiser

The Dartmoor Classic Sportive, organised and run by the Mid-Devon Cycling Club, is widely recognised as the most prestigious open-road cycling event in the UK. Established in 2007, the Dartmoor Classic has grown in popularity, attracting cyclists from around the world. The Dartmoor Classic offers you a choice of three routes. The Grande (107 miles / 173 km), the Medio (67 miles / 109 km) or the Piccolo (38 miles / 61 km).

    • Did the event in 2017

There are three length of races available at the Dartmoor Classic: Grande (~100miles), Medio (~65miles) and Piccolo (~35miles); I had entered the Piccolo, which meant a leisurely 0830 start compared to 6am for the Grande riders! Due to living in close proximity to the race venue, I travelled to Newton Abbot race course the day before to collect my race numbers and timing chip. The registration area was a little chaotic, but I collected my pack quickly and had the added bonus of discovering I had forgotten about ordering a cycle jersey! The following day, on arriving at the race course prior to the start, we found out that the car park was unavailable - it would have been useful to be informed of this in advance, however parking was found nearby at the local gym and we went over to the start line. The 'real' start line was actually 3 miles away at Kingsteinton and riders were being set off in groups of about 100 following a safety car. There was no seeding prior to the start, and due to starting in the 2nd wave of Piccolo riders, this meant having to listen to the race brief twice and then spend the first 5 miles of the course overtaking slower people and those on hybrids/mountain bikes etc.The course itself was beautiful with some stunning Dartmoor scenery, technical sections and a reasonable amount of climbing/descending! The marshalls with big red flags at each turn point ensured that individuals remained on course, and they were universally friendly. The roads were not closed for the race, but the biggest danger apart from the occasional Sunday driver behaving like Toad of Toad Hall, were the cyclists themselves - from the novices with no knowledge of the Highway Code to some more experienced riders showcasing some very dangerous 'skills'. There were feed stations on route, however I did not use them due to cycling the short route. The timing finish, as per the start, was not at the race course, meaning that cyclists had a further 3 mile cycle back, which was a bit of an anti-climax, and means the race is not the distance originally billed (31 rather than 35 miles for the Piccolo). At the race course, there was a 'finisher's funnel' and event village, where spectators could wait and medals were collected, and you could get a photo on a podium with your time displayed. A nice touch is the fact that there are Gold, Silver and Bronze medals relating to finish times for each length of race.In summary, the Dartmoor Classic is a nice race with some stunning scenic cycling at a good price, however it is somewhat lacking in occasion, and better logistical planning would add to the experience. However due to living in the local area and having the opportunity to often cycle in this beautiful region, it is not a race I would personally choose to participate in again.

Names can be deceptive… we were joking last week about the titles of races giving you an idea of what’s coming your way. ‘Immortal’ or ‘Tough Mudder’ give you a clue what’s the race director has got in mind, so how difficult can a race with ‘Waddle’ in the title be?Well the simple answer is VERY, in fact I think the Wambrook Waddle possibly one of the toughest 10km’s I’ve ever done and through some sort of Harry Potter wizardry the race director managed to put more climbing in than downhill but we started and finished at the same place!!But don’t let that put you off, Chard Road Runners put on this brilliant event, and for only £8 quid for ARC affiliated runners, I couldn’t think of a nicer place to be running on a Sunday afternoon in mid-May.Brian, Karen and I were the BHAM Runners in attendance, Brian planned on taking it easy after yesterday’s Immortal 10k and was keeping Karen company near the back. I was running with Steve Small from Langport Runners again, as we usually enjoy a social chat and a catch up… which there was definitely less of this time as breathing was hard let alone talking!!The race is mostly on land owned by the Eames family, so apart from a few footpaths it’s a location that you don’t get to run on usually, which is always nice. Starting at the top of the hill seems like a great place to start, and hammering down the first 800 metres, dodging rocks and people was great, over the first stream crossing, and then the first climb begins, going up a fairly steep incline for the next 2km, just to really sap some of the strength out of those legs, this is followed by a great long downhill section where we really manged to stretch the calves off whilst enjoying the more sweeping sections.Another smaller refreshing stream crossing and a short climb and we’d hit the halfway point, before another short downhill section, back through some more water and another climb begins all the way up to about the 7km point, Kilometres 7 – 9 were pretty flat through fields with cracking views and it finally felt like we were getting somewhere again before a final short climb and then a downhill finish back into the farm back in time for tea and medals. The race winner set a new course record at a blistering 39:42…. Which is over 10 minutes faster than my best road time so I am in awe of anyone that can go that fast on a course like this. For normal people times I came in at a lazy 01:13:49, Brian with his second 10k race of the weekend at 01:26:35 after ditching Karen earlier in the run (who said romance is dead) came in at 01:38:49.One for the diary next year!
