A popular race on a popular hill. The biggest dangers are colliding with hill walkers and tripping on the stony descent. This race has a high casualty rate, with bloodied knees and several broken ankles in recent years. That said, it's a great race with distinct sections of forest trail (largely felled now), open hill, plateau, summit dome, and narrow summit ridge.

Registration, pre-information and event startRegistration was easy and a pre-information pack was emailed out well in advanced with everything you could need to know. The organisers are really friendly, even on the day they were greeting everyone like old friends which creates a lovely vibe.Race bibs were not posted but collected before the event (adjacent to start line) by extremely friendly and helpful event staff – they provided pins if required. On site free parking was provided and marshalled, just 20mins from Glasgow City Centre and is easy to get to by car. The later you arrived, the further away you needed to park. If you were v late this could be a 1km walk but this was specified in the pre-information leaflet – my partner drove so I just jumped out near the start while he went and parked. A shuttle bus also operated to save those legs!! At the event village there are some very good quality stalls selling hats, coffee, pizza and vegan food. And a short walk to the main Whitelee visitor centre. The runThe race is an exciting loop that follows the trails of the Whitelee Wind Farm site. It is well sign posted and had two water stops with friendly marshals and a portaloo! There is no crowd support except on the finish straight but you don’t do a run like this for cheerleaders, it’s all about the nature, beauty and challenge.I loved the course and the run, it is challenging with 681ft of elevation during the course. There is a killer hill at mile 11, so make sure you keep something in reserve for that!I finished 8th in 1:28:25 and ran most of the run by myself with a distant figure up ahead and a couple behind, which is quite unique for a half marathon.Goodie bagThe medal is first-rate and has a spinning windmill. Goodie bag was the best ever – including: windmill socks, naked bar, banana, jelly babies, t-shirt, energy bar, plus the actual bag was good quality.Big bonus -- Over 1000 runner photos are provided for free by the event on facebook and through photographer’s website – that is amazing in itself, most runners have a personal finisher’s pic and the quality is excellent.
    • Did the event in 2017

Living so close and walking with my dogs on a regular basis at Whitelee Windfarm, this half marathon became a no brainer for me to enter to run my first half marathon and trail run at the same time. Seems bizarre that I have never run a half marathon when I have done the full marathon in London first!Sign up through Breaking Strain events website was really easy and all of the information supplied to us regarding the course and setup was flawless and regular. On the day, we parked in the local primary school and the event supplied regular buses to the Windfarm as running the event there does not allow the amount of cars that would need to be parked there for obvious reasons! The weather forecast did not look great for the day, however when you are running you don't seem to notice it anyway. It was quite funny when you hear a lot of people commenting that it was very windy! It is a windfarm after all!To the race, safety briefing took place and we set off promptly at 10am. Such a beautiful setting to start a race as we headed down the first hill which then flattened out for the first mile. Not so much a technical trail race, however some loose stones and bigger rocks under foot at times made you need to concentrate on your technique and foot placement throughout. The race headed downhill for the first 5 miles or so with only a few small uphills towards the 10k (water station - missed my haribos!) and 7 mile mark! The race then takes a turn up towards the stunning reservoir and obviously if you start at the top of the hill and head down, you gotta head back up the way. Between 7 and 11 miles, the hills seemed gradual with only a little pace slowing but nothing major, although as your run along the reservoir on one side, you do have a glimpse of the 'everest' on the other side towards the finish! With some wet slippery cattle grids to cross - good fun and a bit different - we headed towards the last 2 miles. I felt great on the big hill and had to encourage a few of the walkers to keep running but did leave them to it and kept running. At the top of it, I thought it was fairly flat until the finish but I forgot about the hill we came down at the start. One final push up this hill and a fairly flat last 100m to the finish made for a very enjoyable half. Not running this for time with no expectations, I was really pleased with my 1:45:17! Results were live online also which, in a remote area is always great to see also! From my picture you will see that I am still part of the poor man's #visorclub and worse than that, didn't see any RaceCheck visor's there on the course! You might need to sort this!A great race that I would certainly recommend to anyone looking for something a bit different. 3 great options also with the 10k, half marathon and 50k Ultra (they took a battering with the weather!)Will certainly look to sign up to more events from Breaking Strain and also take part next year again!

I was pleasantly surprised by this run as I usually run trails. To have the crowd support did deliver a new dynamic to me aside from the usual couple of people every now and again. It is a fast course and has good potential for pb. I would run this again as it has a well organised but fun atmosphere and I would recommend it to anybody a big thumbs up from me.
    • Did the event in 2018

Apart from the hill at the beginning this race is fairly flat with the odd little hill but a downhill straight afterwards. I thoroughly enjoyed the route. A lovely run through 2 parks and a great finish in the City Centre. Would definitely do again.
    • Did the event in 2017

I have given this race a high rating as I cannot fault the organisation of the race. As you'd expect with anything organised by the Great Run series, it was very slick. As this was a point to point race starting in George Square and finishing in Glasgow Green, there were baggage buses which were well organised and there was no problem picking up my stuff at the end.The weather was dreadful on the day with drizzly rain and, at one point, quite high winds as we ran through Bellahouston Park. I was also recovering from a nasty cold and felt dreadful.  However, the route was enjoyable and I have given it a high rating because it covered so many great Glasgow landmarks. Running over the Kingston Bridge and through Pollok Park were highlights for me. The leaves on the trees in Pollok Park were just turning to orange and it was a great autumn display. There was a nice T shirt, medal and goody bag at the end. Plenty of water was also available. Overall a great race, well worth doing.

What can I say. This is without a doubt the most breathtaking race I have taken part in. My first trail event saw me head from the Cotswolds to Balquhidder in Scotland over 7 hours away - some might say a risky move!Registration was done online and was quick and easy to do via entry central with the option of ordering a t shirt and or buff for collection on the day which was seamless!Race packs arrived a few weeks in advance and contained your race bib/chip and race day instructions. Communication via social media was good in the lead up to the event which was nice. On the day we were treated to warm weather and plenty of sunshine but you could tell it had been wet no long before. The marshalls and volunteers did a fantastic job of getting everyone parked safely and enabling an easy exit on what could have been a tricky parking area. The venue itself was the Monachyle Mor restaurant which had put on a full event-village with plenty of food vans etc. A commentator was on hand throughout and really helped make a lively and relaxed atmosphere. Great for runners and spectators. Race briefing was good and those who had entered the Mhor Trilogy ( 10k, 1/2 marathon and marathon) were positioned at the front and then finish time graded followed. We started promptly at 12pm. The route started at the front of the Monachyle Mor and then used the single track lane away from the venue for the first 1km or so before reaching a turning point to return to the pub before heading up into the hill for the remaining 7.5km. Water stations at 3,6 and 9 kilometres were well stocked with water, sweets and energy drink - much appreciated on a warm day with in excess of 800 ft of elevation. As you rounded one of the bends your ears suddenly pricked to the sound of bagpipes filling the Glen which really lifted you as you made your way up the hill. Fair play to the young piper dressed in traditional outfit in the heat.Once at the top of hill and a chance to take on more water it was time to head back down again and enjoy the stunning scenery! If I hadn’t slowed to take photos I’d have recorded a better time but I wanted to get my monies worth! The scenery was second to none and hard to do justice in a review! The finish stretch saw us back out into the lane and into the event village where the commentator called each finisher over the line and medals and water distributed. Free pints were also provided by one of the event sponsors which was a lovely touch.A fun, lively but relaxed event which had my sister in law and I still talking about how good it was 24 hours later, this event is definitely one to do again!

    About the event
    From the organiser

The Pedal for Scotland Big Belter is a Sportive ride of 110 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh. The ride uses the same start and finish points as the Classic Challenge ride, but takes a completely separate route through the Scottish Borders, meaning you get the buzz of Scotlands biggest bike event on a quieter route designed for serious road cyclists. The transport service will serve Big Belter riders too, meaning there is an easy and hassle free way to get you and your bike to the start in Glasgow Green, or back home from Edinburgh at the finish.

The Route: Busy A roads, industrial estates, and roads in such a shocking state that youd think twice about driving a car over them (potholes, farm detritus, and in some sections in the last 10 miles, no perceivable road surface just a patchwork of holes and bumps).Bad route planning too e.g. lots of very tight turns on descents and high speed sections. Shocking state of road on entering Ingleston at end (washboard concrete road with gravel scattered about).Terrible feed stations very poor choice, and very little of it.No access to the event when official transport arrived at Glasgow Green (marshals hadnt opened it yet).A goody-bag that consisted of one leaflet and a bottle of water.A feed station that required all the riders to take their shoes off before entering. This is now a bike ride that, wait for it, tells all the riders to get off their bikes before crossing the finishing line. A treat greeting riders at the end of 100 miles is being shouted at to get off your bike as you approach the finish line.Still waiting for my chip time (3 days and counting).
