    About the event
    From the organiser

In the glorious private setting of the Flete Estate, Holbeton, Devon (PL81LW) we are hosting a Long marathon/Baby Ultra-Marathon distance race, its actually 29.5 miles. It involves 2 estuary crossings at Burgh Island and the Erme Estuary before finishing in the pretty village of Holbeton.

Courses are now designed so you can expect a lovely mix of private footpaths, coastal path, bridle paths, country fields and Woodland. However, the marathon incorporates the South West Coast Path on both sides of the estuary including a beach section at Bigbury-on-Sea and a run across the causeway to the privately owned Burgh Island.

On marked paths to the west of the island, we take you up to the top of the island, you descend and cross the causeway to continue the South West Coast Path further westwards climbing some awesome hills before racing the tide at Wonwell beach, across the estuary and running across Mothecombe beach. You then follow a circular route, continuing on the South West Coast Path for a few miles and on to the village to finish to pick up your well earned medal.

When I first signed up to the race I wasn't too sure what to expect as there wasn't any reviews or much information other than the description on the website.Communication was pretty good. race day instructions were only sent out a few days prior. I guess this is probably because of the variables in weather and route changes but some extra communication a couple of weeks prior would be nice but by no means a deal breaker. Directions to the start were very clear and parking was very easy.Registration and kit check went very smoothly . I would say that a coupe of extra toilets would have gone down well. But I was there early enough not to have to queue too long. Before the start of the race was a nice and short race briefing. They had explained some locals/walkers had removed some of the way markers for some unknown reason so and they were doing their best to make sure we didnt get lost! The race itself was amazing. The route was stunning. First following the River Erme up and down before meandering through some beautiful countryside and villages before dropping into Bigbury then running along the beach out to Burgh Island. There as a little welcome part there cheering us on which was nice as I felt pretty sapped of energy by that point after running for what felt like a couple of miles on the beach. After Burgh Island the real challenge started. The South West Coast Path out to the Mothecombe estuary crossing. The scenary was amazing but the temperature was also starting to rise and it felt tough. After the crossing there was another couple of tough sections of coastal path before again heading inland over some beautiful countryside before making our way back up the River Erme to the finish line. The reception at the finish was amazing lots of cheering and clapping. Just what you want after completing 46.4km with 1300m elevation. All in all I really enjoyed my day runing Race the Tide stunning route I don't think you could tire of. I thought the aid stations were well stocked and supported although I didn't use them to there full potential other than topping up my water/nutrition bottles. There wasn't much in the way of crowds/spectators around the route but for me I wasn't that bothered it was remote so I don't blame people for not standing in the middle of nowhere to cheer us on.Overall I thought it was well organised well. Marshalled and put together I would Definately recomend it to an new or seasoned trail runnerJust one addition I think would have added to the experiance is some sort of bar/food at the finish. I could have murdered a cider and a burger at the end.

There are 3 distances to the Race the Tide events, 10K, 16 mile Half-Marathon and 29  mile Marathon, as you can tell this is a trail event where unusual distances are commonbut Pure Trail tell you the distances beforehand so you know what you are getting. The Pure Trail team are always very friendly and well organised, this is a must do event and I will be back next year, not sure which distance I will do next year, but this year it was the 16 mile option for me, which saw us head uphill from the start and within half a mile, wading through a very wet, muddy water section, which for me is great fun, then single track through woodland, before we crossed a bridige over the estaury and up into more woods, the following downhill through the woods was fast and fun, with estuary glances through the trees, soon we were at mile 6.5 and at the Erme Estuary, the tide was out but it still meant a run through some water, others walked I ran, splashing through the water, then it was a couple of miles of hilly coast path before turning inland through fields and country lanes, before we reentered the woods and had the pleasure of wading through the muddy water again, quick stop for some photos and downhill to the finish, where we got a fab medal and a well stocked finish line of goodies. Do this event!

The race started in front of Paignton Pier in front of quite a large crowd and then the route went to Torguay. The course is a 2 lap course which i never like but the event was well marshalled and supported. There was adequate water stations especially on a warm day with bottles of water given and energy gels later on. The course is a little bit hilly in places but enjoyable since you are never far from the Devon coastline. In conclusion a very enjoyable event and i will probabley do next year.
    • Did the event in 2018

This was my very first Torbay Half. I had heard good things from friends who had run it in the past. And as they were running it again this year I decided to join them.Registering for the race online was easy. If you register with plenty of time the race pack is sent out to you.The event itself is well organised, the route is clearly marked and on closed roadsThe race starts in Paignton and you run once around the sea front before heading out towards Torquay. The course is quite undulated but the hills are not too steep so they are pretty manageable.I quite liked the approach into Torquay. Lots of support from the crowd and it was nice to see the big wheel in the background. Once around the big wheel you head back into Paignton. First lap done, ready to start the second lap. If you are not a fan of 2-lap races maybe this race isn’t for you. I know some of my running friends don’t take part simply because of this reason. The crowd in Paignton is out en-masse and they are really good at cheering you on especially when approaching the finish line. The finish line is by the sea. Not many races can say that. It’s great to take your shoes off and jump into the sea to cool off, especially on a hot day like it was this year. Having said that, my friends who have been doing this race for the last 3 years have said that it’s always been sunny and hot on race day.Nice medal, a good finisher t-shirt and a generous goody bag. All in all I think it is a great race and very good value for money – just over £20 if you are a UKA affiliated runner.
    • Did the event in 2018

On Arrival at Paignton station the start line is half a mile from the station next to the peir. Race village and bag drop right on the sea front. When race day come around you all called with plenty of time the start. On the off you have to run once around the sea front before heading out to of town towards Torquay.  There some nice hills to start but not to bad .You get a fast run in to Torquay, once around big wheel you head back to Paignton.  First lap done you repeat the lap. Its great running to the finish line you have so many  people cheering to the end. You get a great medal and finisher shirt and goody bag.  After race some great entertainment in the village and bars. Had great time jumping in to the sea to cool off. Paignton has lots of places to stay and lots of restaurants .Not a bad half  to do.

The title says it all, this stunning route on Dartmoor starts with a long climb up, of course stopping several times to look around and take some photos provided some relief for the legs, then an undualting run along some very boggy "path ways" jumping, slipping, squelching along the bogs, then the Volcano was in sight, a quick climb up to the top, some photos and selfies, before a short drop down, then more bogs, water crossings, a clapper bridge and a short climb up before a nice long downhill section, one final stream crossing a very short climb and a nice long descent down to the finish, good support at the finish, nice medal as well. Pure Trail put on well organised events across Devon and some further afield. Check them out you wont regret it. Highlight of the race for me was the guy in front misjudging a bog and going in up to his middle with a high pitched "Arrgh" sorry but it was funny from my angle.

Starting and finishing in the Moorland village of Peter Tavy and nestled below the wild Tors of West of Dartmoor. The Dartmoor 3 in ONE offers 3 races of 3 distances, all in ONE day. 22.25 miles in total.

All races start and finish from Peter Tavy Village Hall with a mass start for each race. You have to finish the first to be on the start line for the second. How much time you have to recover between races is down to the individual. Do you go all out and rest, or pace it out and go for negative splits? Its up to you

Start times are generous to a degree but the cumulative effect of 3 race starts in 5 hours is certain to have an effect on performance. Its a long race broken into 3 faster, shorter events. In itself, this is a new concept and we think its going to be a real test of endurance and tenacity to be the pureTrail Dartmoor 3 in ONE overall winner.

After spectating the event for the last few years I am glad I finally took part. The weather has the potential to make or break an event. Luckily the weather was really nice, maybe a tad warm for a race, but the sunshine made running through the Hoe, Barbican and Saltram really picturesque. The Athletes Village is well organised and there’s the option of having a FREE pre-race or post-race massage offered by Marjon University. There were enough toilets which meant the queues weren’t very long. Maybe a few more would help shorten waiting time, but it wasn’t a deal breaker. Maybe a few toilets on route wouldn’t be a bad idea, even though it’s only a half marathon. The race was brilliant and well marshalled. The course is a bit hilly – after all we are in Devon – but not too challenging. Some people don’t like the out and back along the Embankment. I didn’t mind it. It gave me the opportunity to look for my friends and cheer them on.The water stations – every 3 miles – were great and well manned. Maybe having a sport drink option half way would be a welcome added bonus. The finish is uphill and yes it can be tough but the support all the way from the Barbican to the Hoe was absolutely amazing. The medal and goodie bag collection at the end was well organised – as well as being given water and banana there was the option of collecting an energy drink too. The goodie bag itself was actually a drawstring gym bag which contained the event t-shirt, a chocolate bar and a packet of crispsI had a great time and I will definitely do it again next year

The first half of the run is a very fast downhill making it easy for the runners to cover the ground in good time however, once they reach the flat it is then a very hard slog up some very steep hills before re-entering the village for a fast downhill to the finish.

I had raced this event in 2016 (2nd Female) and thought I would race again as I enjoyed it so much despite the 712ft elevation gain! The course was well marshalled and despite the lack of spectators the beautiful scenery makes up for that.Finishers medal, small bag and loads of Ambrosia for all finishers. A bbq and cake sale were also in the small race village.Disapointed that there was only prizes for 1st in Age Cat and none for 1st 3 finishers overall. How they can start an Age Cat at 1st Veteran 30 Female is beyond me? Clearly not a Vet at that age, no other races in Armada Series have such a prize and start at V35.Anyway a new course best for me, 2nd female again and a very cheap entry fee.

And, you'll be pleased to know that in 2018 we are offering individual entries for both distances and a paired entry for the long course!

So, expect to run on a coastal path, sand, gravel, tarmac in your wetsuit, and your swim stages are all in the sea around the beautiful St Austell Bay coastline.

After enjoying the Hokey Cokey so much in 2017 I returned in 2018 to compete as a pair with my partner. Yet again Mad Hatter Sports Events have got it spot on! An option of a short course or long course cater for all abilities whilst the beautiful location adds to the experience! Another superbly organised event supported by the best marshals and water support, well stocked feed stations and all over happy vibe make for one of the best days in the calendar! Very highly recommended.

Despite being tough I loved every second of it from the registration to the prize giving. The marshalls were amazing and so supportive and the course was one of natural beauty with views that were definitely worth it. Prizes were something else with impressive trophies and a pair of barefoot swim run trainers. Will most definitely be back next year!!

I've been fortunate in being at over 10 SwimRun events over the last couple of years all over Europe. This event is without doubt right up there with the best of them. Its mixture of stunning location, friendly inclusive ethos and slick organisation makes for a fun but challenging event that makes both the 'whippets' and the 'give it a go' want to come back for more!

My first ultra and it certainly was ultra hard.! It was get as far as you can as the crow flys in 24hours, I did 33 miles as the crow flys but was probably 50miles overall. Feet were on fire but legs remained in pretty good condition. A few blisters for my efforts. Will be going back again next year to beat my position of 5th!

The Dartmoor Classic Sportive, organised and run by the Mid-Devon Cycling Club, is widely recognised as the most prestigious open-road cycling event in the UK. Established in 2007, the Dartmoor Classic has grown in popularity, attracting cyclists from around the world. The Dartmoor Classic offers you a choice of three routes. The Grande (107 miles / 173 km), the Medio (67 miles / 109 km) or the Piccolo (38 miles / 61 km).

    Reviews
    • Did the event in 2017

There are three length of races available at the Dartmoor Classic: Grande (~100miles), Medio (~65miles) and Piccolo (~35miles); I had entered the Piccolo, which meant a leisurely 0830 start compared to 6am for the Grande riders! Due to living in close proximity to the race venue, I travelled to Newton Abbot race course the day before to collect my race numbers and timing chip. The registration area was a little chaotic, but I collected my pack quickly and had the added bonus of discovering I had forgotten about ordering a cycle jersey! The following day, on arriving at the race course prior to the start, we found out that the car park was unavailable - it would have been useful to be informed of this in advance, however parking was found nearby at the local gym and we went over to the start line. The 'real' start line was actually 3 miles away at Kingsteinton and riders were being set off in groups of about 100 following a safety car. There was no seeding prior to the start, and due to starting in the 2nd wave of Piccolo riders, this meant having to listen to the race brief twice and then spend the first 5 miles of the course overtaking slower people and those on hybrids/mountain bikes etc.The course itself was beautiful with some stunning Dartmoor scenery, technical sections and a reasonable amount of climbing/descending! The marshalls with big red flags at each turn point ensured that individuals remained on course, and they were universally friendly. The roads were not closed for the race, but the biggest danger apart from the occasional Sunday driver behaving like Toad of Toad Hall, were the cyclists themselves - from the novices with no knowledge of the Highway Code to some more experienced riders showcasing some very dangerous 'skills'. There were feed stations on route, however I did not use them due to cycling the short route. The timing finish, as per the start, was not at the race course, meaning that cyclists had a further 3 mile cycle back, which was a bit of an anti-climax, and means the race is not the distance originally billed (31 rather than 35 miles for the Piccolo). At the race course, there was a 'finisher's funnel' and event village, where spectators could wait and medals were collected, and you could get a photo on a podium with your time displayed. A nice touch is the fact that there are Gold, Silver and Bronze medals relating to finish times for each length of race.In summary, the Dartmoor Classic is a nice race with some stunning scenic cycling at a good price, however it is somewhat lacking in occasion, and better logistical planning would add to the experience. However due to living in the local area and having the opportunity to often cycle in this beautiful region, it is not a race I would personally choose to participate in again.
