Very pleasant, well organised sportive. Excellent value for money.  Lovely place to start as well.    Would have liked to have had some flapjack at the end for those of us who don't stop at the feed stations, I missed out and I heard it was ace!   Also, a couple more waymarkers after the feed stations would have been useful.  As so many people stopped to eat, those of us who didn't had a couple of 'is this the right way?' moments as there was no-one around and suddenly no waymarkers!

Really well organised and good communication near the date so was easy to access the information on the day. Some loos near the car park would have been really helpful - to help you get organised before you got on your bike. • Did the event in 2018

    Hilly with views to match
    Registration was super fast.
    Race briefing was fine.
Route was well marked. Scenery was brilliant.
2018 was dry but very windy - very glad of the mandatory kit to be honest.
Mixed terrain so need to select shoes for that.
    Challenging and rewarding course.
    Marshalls were excellent.
T-shirt, medal and a bowl of chilli at the finish.
    I’d recommend this race.
  • Did the event in 2017

now this is not a race for the faint hearted. running snowdonia Marathon the weekend before probably wasnt the best prep (hence the DNF).Registration was really straight forwards and the morning breifing covered everything that you neede to know.this is a tough ol course but the climbs are worth every step. mixed terrian with some road running so please wear suitable clothing so that you are visable to drivers. from the 13 miles or so of the course that i saw, you will love this race.
  • Did the event in 2017

The parking area looked massive on the map but soon runs out so get there early or be prepared for a mad dash round the local streets for a spot! 10 minutes walk to the start is easy and signposted, registration straight forward. Good to have use of the visitor centre for toilets and warmth but gets very overcrowded. I remember the start being a couple of miles of slow incline with decent scenery , nothing too tough. Much of the course is tarmac lanes, farm track and grassy track which I thought was a great mix. Only a few aid stations and basic, I would recommend being self sufficient. The hills are all bearable nothing too bad, but the very last one within a mile of the finish is a proper bastard when you’re dead on your feet. About a 20% gradient for about 500m roughly. Thankfully once over the top you can spring down to the finish. Shame the medal is generic, but you get a base tech shirt thrown in too

I'll be honest - for £8.50 I wasn't expecting much.I certainly wasn't expecting water stations on route (in a 10k), a fully marshalled course, good first aiders - and a medal to boot! It's a great little race, with about 100 taking part, but it probably deserves double the turn out. It's very scenic throughout, there's two absolute killer hills in the first 5k - but it's worth it for the views and some fast downhills. It's a bank holiday Monday staple - did it for the first time this year and will be back again and again!

This was my first ever race since starting to run 6 months prior, it was a enjoyable learning curve. The race landed on a really hot Sunday which isn't ideal for running. I chose this as my 1st race as I live in Rotherham and run around this area while training. It was very easy to register and I collected my race number the day before so I could avoid the queues on race day. Saying this, you still had to collect the timing ankle chip on the day but this wasn't a problem as it was very organized.
As for the race it started in Clifton park with lots of people supporting everyone. From the park you run through Rotherham town then back around the outskirts of the park before re-entering to reach the finish. I didn't realise how hilly Rotherham was till this race!
I was always told not to set off too quickly, this is the first thing I learned as running at a slower pace made it more difficult to over take people at the start. The finish was an up hill stretch that really took it out of me. Plenty of water en-route and marshals with the odd sugary sweets. Definitely entering 2019 now I know what to expect!

I loved doing this race. It fell on an exceptionally hot day which, whilst the weather was lovely, it was not ideal for running a hilly 10k! However, there were plenty of water statauons which were fab, lots of local support, a great atmosphere and a good medal at the end! It was a pretty challenging course in terms of inclines, but the whole race was on pavement. I enjoyed the course and will definitely be doing this race again next year!

This was my 2nd ever 10k , I chose this race as it was local. It was 200m + 2 laps of rothervally country park lakes. Nice flat course on gravel paths perfect for a PB. The only downside I found was you pass the finish area to do the extra lap. Also the country park was still open to public so had to be aware of other people walking/cycling and slow moving cars. Heard other competitors talking about queues for race numbers but I didn't have a problem as got there early as the race info recommend. A enjoyable 10k but slightly boring due to the laps. Cheap looking rubber medal compared to most other race medals. Good for a 1 off race, I don't think I'll do a race around Rothervally again, just use it for training.

I completed the Neurocare Head Start 10k and enjoyed running to raise money for a good cause! The race was around Rother Valley Country Park, which is pretty flat, so a good course to get a PB on. The route was enjoyable, it was a double lap of the lake and then an extra lap of the smaller lake. The extra lap of the smaller lake was a little unpopular with runners as you had to run past the finish area to do the extra lap. Lovely support and friendly Marshall’s. Small but nice event village. My only complaint would be the long queue to college race numbers at the beginning. However, this is a charity race and was very well organised and was very much a lovely race ☺️ got a nice silicone medal at the end too.

This race could be anything you wanted. A first foray in to trail running or a right laugh. It was tough going through streams and mud and there were some brutal hills and tricky to navigate downhills. However the views were gorgeous on a clear sunny day. I would’ve liked a veggie pie as an alternative to pork pie although there were little apple pies for us pork pie averse. It was a great atmosphere at the start although a reasonably low key event. Beware the ‘bog of doom’ where many a running shoe now resides. I miraculously managed to retrieve mine. All I all it was lovely and I’ll be booking this one next year. Highly recommend!

Roche Abbey is definitely a hidden gem, its not very well known, and nevertheless its very beautiful. Roche Abbey is nestled away in South Yorkshire near the picturesque village of Maltby. The races will start and finish within the grounds of the glorious Roche Abbey and will encompass trail and track running through Lord Scarboroughs land, which originally formed part of Sherwood Forest.

Roche Abbey was founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks; it was once home to 50 monks and 20 lay brothers. It is beautifully set in a valley landscaped by Capability Brown. The ruins of Roche Abbey are now the centre piece of the beautifully designed landscape.

Apparently Roche Abbey is a paranormal hotspot with lots of scary activity. The Abbey house which is only 240 years old, which now houses the Abbey shop as many tales surrounding it. One tale is of a Lady in Grey who can be seen looking out of the upstairs window where the sound of a wailing child can also be heard. Towards the end of the Abbey there lies a small stone coffin and it is said if one stares at it long enough, a face will appear.. Yikes!

So come running with us for miles with smiles and enjoy the hidden away treasures in this lesser known part of the world.

On a drunken evening some months ago me and my mate decided it would be a good idea to register for the 20 mile option of this event.  On waking the the next morning we both text each other demanding to know who had hacked our respective phones and done such a thing.Being only our second organised event both me and my mate (Gimli, son of Gloin) were slightly nervous on race day as you never quite know what to expect from the day. I was so nervous that i would get the registration bit wrong that i forgot we were meant to be doing 20 miles. Not quite sure what i was expecting to get wrong mind.Anyway, we need'nt have worried , registration was simple and really friendly, Diane showed us what we needed to do and get.We got chatting to various other runners and Andy the massage man so we were soon feeling very much at home and I even pretented i was a seasoned running veteran to a few folks. They could could blatantly tell i wasnt. The race course was stunning, great trails and spectacular views and plenty of hills.I can't thank the marshalls enough for a superb job of watering, feeding and generally getting us round the course on a ridiculously hot day. Massive thanks to you all, you were brilliant. The finish line was a sight to behold and we were welcomed in like champions. I actually thought i had won the whole event. Alas, i hadnt. The medals and goody bags were a triumph and although i didnt have any cake (I am watching my figure darling), it looked amazing. All in all, we had an incredible day, and so did the hundreds (well 10) of our friends and family who came to support.IGUN is most certainly not grim. Its a lovley warm friendly family of organisers and runners and we will certainly be booking more dates in the diary.

Another great IT'S GRIM UP NORTH (IGUN) race...I only enquired about entry to this race a few hours before the start but organisers were extremely helpful as always. For that I'm very greatful. Held at stunning Canon Hall Park, South Yorkshire. There was ample parking spaces, toilets and even a chance to buy a pre race coffee.Race registration was as easy as it gets. As with all IGUN events there was a nice, friendly pre race atmosphere & an indepth pre race briefing. There were 5 & 10 mile options, I chose to do the 10 mile race. Due to maintainence work at the park the course had to be changed with runners doing either 2 or 4 laps of 2.5 miles distance. These were complexed & varied laps with a mix of hills, grass, firm dirt tracks, paths & a little section of road. It didn't feel like a multi lap race because there was so much to enjoy. The very nature of all trail races means there are always potential trip hazzards but marshals were placed in key positions ensuring we were kept safe. These marshals are heros in my eyes, their support was massively appreciated. Feed stations at the end of each lap had water, cola & various sweet treats.Finishers got a beautiful, solid medal, beer & chocolate. There was also a feast of homebaked cakes, buns & biscuits and they even a vegan option. If you want a friendly, well organised race I highly recommend IGUN events. Can't wait for the next one.

Last minute sign up after melting in the heat of Roche Abbey.Another excellent IGUN race, I've done several of this companies races and I keep going back mainly because everything is the same (not the routes obv), excellent organisation, excellent cake, lovely routes and quality medals/goodie bags.Cannon Hall was no different.Different route to what was originally planned, which didnt bother me as it was only two scenic laps and the route was varied enough to keep it interesting.Marshall support was cheery and helpful.Regarding the medals, after a slip up from the supplier the ribbons had last years date on, I probably would not have noticed if i hadnt ventured on facebook but it's another little insight on how much they care and value their runners with how IGUN have dealt with the issue and promised to correct asap. Looking forward to the next one.
  • Did the event in 2018

As always, the lovely people at IGUN have put on a great race. Super-friendly, value for money events, in lovely locations. This review is specifically for Cannon Hall, but applies to all their events.Every runner is valued, there are no cut off times and those who are last are celebrated and made to feel as special as the first place runner. There’s always a choice of distance and the marshalls and event organisers put in long, arduous hours at each event, making each one worthwhile.Goody bags always contain real ale and chocolate and the medals are custom-designed, always incorporating the Grim logo. The courses are off-road, in beautiful locations, that usually include some not-so-beautiful hills!

The long route is probably one of the toughest challenges that can be done at 115 miles and over 10,000ft of climbing, it certainly isn't to be underestimated! A little more tame but still with the Killer Mile of Winnats Pass, the medium route is 62 miles and manages to squeeze in over 5000ft of climbing - a great starting point if you're looking for a challenge and the long route is just too much! I entered this race in preparation for the Alpe Dhuez Long Dustance triathlon in August. The thinking being that it was the toughest bike event for hills in the Midlands. I wasn’t wrong. it is 112 miles of relentless hills that test the body, mind and soul. The scenery is utterly spectacular and I was lucky enough to do it on a beautiful sunny day, not too warm with no wind. The views help to numb the pain in some truly gruelling inclines.  Three stand out. 1) Winnats Pass - this is a sharp incline at around 15 miles where you need all the gears you’ve got to get through it. Not everyone made it up, but for those that didn’t opt to walk it feels like a massive achievement 2) Holme Moss Hill - a long drag hill that seems to never end. Some relief on the switchbacks but it tests the legs 3) The Cat and Fiddle - at around 83 miles in its the last big challenge, but it’s quite a good one! 6-7 miles of steady incline like an Alpine stage. Seems to go on forever. And in between? Multiple hills and descents to navigate. I had a severe mental wobble at 73 miles but I’m so glad I finished. It’s an epic 10,000 ft of climbing that I’ll neve forget. Great event. Well organised and supported. Do it. You’ll hate it and love it.
  • Did the event in 2017

With less than a month to go before my first 70.3 tri I decided to do a sportive of roughly the bike distance. The Tour of the Peak Sportive is every flat riders worst nightmare. The first 5 miles were a constant uphill, the following 10 were undulating and then the real fun begins when you get to Winnits Pass. I have to admit that I (and may others) had to walk up Winnits Pass (one of the hardest climbs in the country apparently), but walking up in cleats and sliding back down again wasn't actually any easier. I'm not a strong hill rider but thought this wouldbe a challenge, and it was, but an incredible one at that.I did the Medium route (62 Miles) and found absolutely everything from the organisation of the day, the signposting of the route, the aid station (I only stopped at one of the two for my ride) and the friendliness of staff and fellow cyclists absolutely brilliant. The best part of the day however has to be, without a doubt, the views. Absolutely mindblowing.I'll be back next year and hopefully ride all of Winnit's Pass.
