Check out my video of the Southend Half Marathon on YouTube: https://youtu.be/h4wdVyTfrBcThe Southend Half Marathon had a nice friendly feel to it and I had a great day attending this event.Registration was very smooth and race packs arrived in the post a few weeks before the day of the event. Approaching race day we received emails with useful information on what to expect. There was well marshalled, free onsite parking. It did take a bit of time to get into and out of the car park so worth not cutting it too fine with your travel plans. There was a small event village so it was pretty straight forward meeting up with others once you have arrived. The bag drop was well organised and we didn't have to wait much time at all to either drop off or pick up our bags.Following a short safety briefing by the race director we started in waves based on predicted finish time. It's a 2 lap course, the majority of which is along the sea front at Shoeburyness. Except for one very short incline towards the end, the course was about as flat as they come so loads of potential for a PB.I was impressed at the number of water stations along the course. It meant that if you missed one you could easily wait until the next one. The water was in plastic cups and not bottles. The water stations also had sponges available.Upon finishing we received a medal and a goody bag.So all in all I really enjoyed the event. I'd certainly come back and race it again, simply because of the PB potential. But don't just take my word for it, have a look at my video and see for yourself: https://youtu.be/h4wdVyTfrBc

The Southend Half gets better every year with the numbers of runners growing every year. Havens Hospice do a fantastic job putting on this event and I would recommned anyone looking for a PB or just a great Half to register and come along and run this race. The registration process is easy, its not that expensive, the organisation is great and the course is cool running along the seafront. Local support is fantastic. Overall this is one of my favourite half's of the year! I will be back next year!

I was slightly sceptical about signing up for this race originally, as it involved running 2 out and back loops which I would normally avoid.  However, I really enjoyed this race.  Parking was really easy as it was in Shoeburyness so away from the hustle and bustle of Southend.  The race village was just the right size, not too much queuing for loos either which makes a change.  Plenty of information available and very helpful marshalls. I think around 2,000 people did the race but you wouldn't think it as it didn't seemed crowded at the start.  There were 3 waves - under 1.30 (about 3 people were in there!), under 2 and then over 2.  Quite simple but seemed to work well.Very flat course - the only incline was towards the end - around 11 mile ish which you only do once thankfully.Brilliant marshalls too - plenty of water plus wet sponges was a great touch as it was quite humid (although thankfully not sunny).  They were really supportive and jolly.Due to the looped course spectators can see you a few times, which is great for runners seeing family and friends.  Decent views too so actually I didnt get bored.  Although they recommend no heahphones many were wearing them without issue (including me). As long as you can still hear marshalls it's not an issue.Although I didn't get a PB (course definitely has PB potential) I was only 2.5 minutes off so was very happy with my time. All in all a very enjoyable race and extremely well organised.  Nice medal too.  Not forgetting that this race was organised by Haven Hospices, so hopefully substantial funds were raised for them.

The base at Medway Park is a fantastic location and they seem to get full support from the local authority. Great atmosphere around the track with short fun runs for all age groups....grannddaughter "ran" 400  & she's only just 2! Well marshalled event from car parking on site, which is free, to the finish line. Interesting course that was a lot more pleasant than I was expecting. Slightly undulating but good surface all the way using roads and footpaths. Start is on the track making it a bit narrow so if you're going for a place make sure you are near the front. Otherwise please be sensible and use the pace makers to gauge where you should be. Highly recommended.

Good event and nice venue but the run course was no where near as long as it was supposed to be and directions weren't entirely clear which caused a bit of confusion. Overall a great day though!

Lovely lake and setting. Good, fast cycle route but the run was short of the 10k possibily due to a confusion near the circuit end. The run route also had a tricky path that challenged manners of oncoming runners. Also, I'm not on facebook so didn't see the pdf or get a race brief before hand. Maybe admin might email out for next year? I'll definitely do it again though.

gosfield lake triathlon is run by the born2tri team. They have run this event for a few years and have it organised very well. Parking is not on site, it is in the local playing field well signposted, marshalled and a short 300 ish m walk to the lake. Registration is slick and well organised transition is wel marshalled and easy to navigate. They have a bag drop tent which helps when your a lone competitor so you have access to your belongings before the race finishes and transition opens for bike removal.  Race start this year was via a beach start style lining in up in corresponding time zones based upon your 100m time. Previously it had been a start in the water. This was the only issue for me as the actual start area was very narrow and once over the timing mat you were held up slightly. Over than that the swim is good and easy to navigate as 2 laps for the Olympic distance one for the sprint. The bike is two laps of the surrounding countryside on quite roads so not much traffic. The course is two laps for Olympic one for sprint it is quick however there is one hill per lap that gets you!  The run is out into countryside passed the golf club, part trails part farmers track and again two laps for Olympic and one for sprint. This is mostly a traffic free run. There are 2 water stations that are well marshalled. Could do with gells at one of them probably a luxury request rather than anything else! Into the finish line and done great setting, organisation, well signposted and marshalled. This race is on my calendar every year

My second Half Marathon and a great course. Only downside of the route was that being a two lap along the seafront, approx 8 miles was running into the wind! It was tough going! Some up/down hills due to using the seafront and promenade but I was expecting this as have completed Clacton Parkrun a few times.

Well organised and very well supported by locals, especially at the finish area. Plenty of water supplied plus coke, jaffa cakes and jelly babies on the final lap.

The marshals were encouraging and helpful plus the course was well marked. As it got later in the day, the seafront did get a bit busier and some families were oblivious to the runners.

If you need to use the toilet before the start, join the queue early & bring loo roll! Only a couple of public cubicles were available.

Great medal, my first that wasn't round! Water, sweets and bananas provided at the finish.

This was the first time that I have ever ran a half marathon. The only real criticism I have of the clacton half is the placement and supervision of drinks stations. You pass drink stations 4 times, however, the placement of them means that you visit a drinks station twice within a couple of miles and then you have no water until the following station which is at the other end of the course. We also found that there were not enough volunteers on the drinks stations and you had to stop to wait to get a drink. Apart from that, it was generally a good experience and I will be back again next year - all be it with my own drinks!

A windy and tough race. It was harder than I thought but everything was well organised from water stations to marshal.Regarding free parking. I didn’t know until I arrived when a marshal pointed us to the free carpark. It wasn’t mentioned in the race pack unfortunately. I also like to say thank you to Martin Burke for giving me the bib nr I requested.

I arrived in plenty of time and managed to park quite easily in the Visitors Centre cark park although it was all a little confusing with a parkrun nearby and a country show also taking place on the same day which meant Zoe ended up in a different car park to where we had arranged to meet.  Registration was nice and easy, just gave them my name and I got handed my number and we were also able to leave our bags there which was handy.Whilst we were waiting for the start I was trying to work out the route, having not been to this part of the park before I quite literally didn’t have a clue but I was worried there would be a lot of running across fields as that was all I could see.  Luckily enough this was not the case and most of the running was through woodland trail with a slight increase in elevation.  It didn’t feel like there were many downhill parts, until close to the end of the loop when the legs really appreciated it.  It was a  good job I enjoyed the lap as we had to do it 3 times to make up the 10k, I know this puts a lot of people off but I really didn’t mind it especially as we got to run through the woods.  I can’t say I liked it when we were overtaken by the quicker runners which is the only thing when you are doing laps, however it was nice to know what was coming up and I felt comfortable and enjoyed the route and chat we had along the way. The marshals were great, ensuring we knew which way to go and shouting encouragement as we passed, there was a water station at the start / finish point which we passed on each lap and meant we didn’t have to carry our own water – always good. What I really loved about this route, aside from the woods mud and hills, was the wildlife. Whilst covering the 10k we got to see deer running across the field in front of us, horses being ridden through the park and many dogs being walked. This is quite a highlight for me, I would recommend visiting this park one weekend especially if you have a dog to walk or children who can play on the swings. It was a shame I didn’t manage to complete more of this series, however the two events I have done have been organised very well and the medals and goody bags provided have been great.  I hope to be able to do more of these next year and perhaps try out some of the other routes in the series, maybe even try and improve that 10k time as I go.

This half-marathon is not for the faint-hearted.......literally!  It's pretty uppy-downy so you're being worked hard pretty much the whole way round. There is an abundant supply of marshals and locals come out to cheer you on as well. The only suggested improvements I have is regarding the water stations.  Water was provided in plastic cups - I find it extremely hard to drink from cups while running and generally have to stop, consume the water from the cup, then restart.  I did see some squeezy bottle energy drinks at the final station but they did not appear to be readily available/visible at the other stations.I also think the final water station should be positioned nearer the top of the hill.  I really felt rather faint by the time I got to the top of the hill and then I had to run a good 400m before reaching the water station.Having finally completed the race there was water available but it was only when I specifically requested an energy drink that a marshal rummaged into a box and pulled out a 2l bottle of coke.  The course is hard going so the energy drinks should be readily available.Having said all that I had a great run yesterday and I'm sure I'll be back again in 2019.  Thank you!

This was my first time doing the Canterbury Half Marathon. I really should check out courses before signing up! This was much hillier than I expected. Not sure how they managed it, but pretty sure there were more up hills than down hills!Fantastic marshals, plenty of water stations, great local support, beautiful country side, could've done without the lovely farm smells. Really found it to be a well organised and challenging race. Great views and plenty of walking up hills opportunities to take photos. Loved the medal and snacks at th end. Thanks!

If you've ever fancied running through orchards of apples and pears together with the waft of gently drying hops, the Canterbury Half Marathon could be the one for you.  But you'll need to be breathing in deeply - very deeply; 'cos those hills are gonna hurt. Its described as a lolipop route with a shared 4 mile section : upward gradient followed by steep downhill on the way out and reversed on the way back.  In between you'll find picturesque Kentish villages, wooded roads and hills. My first fault is with myself for underestimating the terrain and my speed going out.  Too much too soon.  My second is with the water stations - too many loose plastic cups strewn across the lane for 100 yards.  Please consider an alternative means of delivery or consider bins after the feed station.  My third is with fellow runners dropping cups, bottles and gel wrappers in out beautiful countryside.  I know you're racing but that's no excuse to litter.Otherwise, this is a thoroughlly enjoyable half marathon.  I was glad to see it held on a Bank Holiday Monday (rhather than a Sunday) and gave me the ideal opportunity to pop over from Hampshire to see my parents.

Great event if you like laps, which i hate very boring. Course itself and mile makers was rubbish, because it was laps first mile marker you saw was mile 8 WTF. very quiet country lanes which was great when you were on a main road they were shut off which was great, but laps are so boring, once you finished the laps you went back on the main road which was shut off to traffic to the finish with a nice little hill around mile 12.5 to finish you off . maybe for me if they could sort out the laps situation an event i would do again.

The Great Notley Autumn Duathlon is based at Great Notley Country Park in Braintree, with the attraction of a beautiful parkland venue but very accessible with good road links from the A120 and A131.

The race starts and finishes with a 4km run within the confines of the country park. You will run on a mixture of grass and surfaced paths, with a challenging hill included in the run. The transition to the cycle section is on a grass area adjacent to the access road. The cycle course is all on road, consisting of two 10km laps offering a fast but enjoyable ride through Rayne, Willows Green and Great Leighs before returning to the centre for the final run. The manageable distances and traffic free run course makes it an ideal race for novices.

This was my first ever Triathlon and I really didn't know what to expect. Registration was well organised and instantly put me at ease. The swim was just offshore so for someone like me who wasn't a confident swimmer, it gave me confidence and then when I realised I could still stand up if required I relaxed and just got on with it. The support along the swim was great and the same in transition. The ride was flat and having never completed anything else I can't criticise the marshalling or marking etc. Starting the run was great. Loads of people cheering and the MC pumping out the tunes. Really made you feel good. The run was like dodging the crowd but still very well supported. Personally having nothing to compare to it I was more than happy with the day.
    • Did the event in 2017

Tide came in just before first wave started, so there wasn't a lot of water to swim in! Easy to sight as we just followed the shore line. Bike course is dead flat, but has several turns and junctions. Could have been better marshalled in some places, including the traffic lights.Run is straight out-and-back on the sea front. Lots of supporters and great atmosphere.Pleasantly surprised with this inaugural event. Recommended for beginners and more advanced triathletes alike.Read more here: http://paddlepedalpace.co.uk/2017/05/race-re-cap-southend-triathlon/

This was my first sprint triathlon so it was all new to me. The marshalls and competitors were all very friendly which made it more enjoyable. From a personal perspective I learned a lot especially with the transitions. So I can build on this going forward. In terms of the organisation I thought it was a well run event and the interaction with the public was handled in a professional manner. In a perfect world we would have closed roads but this is unlikely to happen. The main thing is that everyone was smiling at the end, the sun shone brightly and this was a great inaugural event.

HARP 24 is unlike many races. It is held over 24 hours (to raise money for our local homeless charity - HARP) and you can do as many laps of the beautiful 4 mile trail route over the 24 hours as you fancy. One can run solo, duo and in groups of up to 12 and in various mixed sex groupings. It is not marshalled out on the course (nor at night) but St John Ambulance do cycle around the route and people are advised to buddy up with others for the night runs. It is just a fantastic event and the camaraderie between everyone taking part is unlike any other running event I have done. There is camping and loo facilities in the nearby rugby club centre, as well portaloos of course. Water is available at the start and finish tent. It is advisable if possible to do a recce of the route before the event itself, I'd advise, given it is not marshalled (there are of course maps and signs available). 2018 is the third year I have participated, with the first two years being part of a team. Lovely route, great and also unique atmosphere. Great t-shirt and medal too. Always photographers on the night runs and that's the trick - to get one of their brilliant photos! A race unilke any other!

This challenge is something of a change for an SVN event in that the loop is 13.1 miles or so and will pass through Jeskyns Woodland, the Darnley Estate and Ranscombe Wildflower Reserve. It will require a little bit of navigation and will be a bit more LDWA instruction/map reading than normal totally obvious/marked routes. However the route is largely out and back and its pretty straightforward and we'll have a long time limit as there are three pubs and an ice cream shop on the route in case you need to "pop in for directions"...

This was my first SVN race, and I had heard they were a friendly bunch, and this was certainly true. As a local I had a distinct advantage that I had run several parts of the route previously and had a pretty good idea of where I was and where I was going at all times! This was the first time I hadn't run a huge mass participation event and I loved it. Registration was a friendly hello, and collect your number, and a set of course instructions if you wanted/needed them. With the race briefing there was a long set of congratulations to those on their 50th/100th/200th marathon, which was very inspiring.Shortly after and we were off, the first couple of miles was an out and back section, mostly on pavements. Then on to the more exciting jaunt through Jeskins nature park (gravel track) and then onto Ranscombe Farm via the very picturesque Cobham village, where we did a loop (with a stop at the aid station) before heading back to the start for the first 13.1 mile loop. There's plenty to look at and the views are great to take your mind off a couple of the more undulating sections of the course. Everyone is running at their own speed and there are lots of "hello's" and "great running" greetings going on as you pass one another at different sections of the course. There is a 6 hour time limit and the number of loops you do in that time is entirely up to you. I went with the intention of probably 1 _maybe_ 2 but quickly decided I was definitely going to do 2.The aid stations were fantastic, well stocked with water and squash and almost every type of crisp/chocolate/nut/sweets that you could think of, which cheerful volunteers who were so encouraging. At the finish I was awarded a huge medal, and a fab goody bag containing all the things you realy want after a race - chocolate, crisps, and cola/beer.The SVN team put on loads of events through the year, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this or any other of their events...I can't wait now unil cakeathon in a few weeks time!

I did a full Tough Mudder the month before this event, so this 5k of inflatable obstacles had a different feel! Lots of first timers and non-runners and flexibility with start waves (lots of traffic around the event) which meant groups could still run together.  The warmup was hilariously camp and perfect for the event!  Nice leisurely atmosphere on the way round and the marshalls were lovely - not too muddy for the first half of the course but made up for later!!  Would recommend to anyone wanting to add variety to a charity run instead of just running a 5k - lovely encouraging atmosphere, definitely give it a go if you fancy a nice obstacle course!

I absolutely loved this event! The course was BEAUTIFUL (I couldn’t believe how hot it was!!) and to have completed a half marathon by 9.30am was awesome and meant I still had the bank holiday to do what I pleased! The course was laps, which I wasn’t sure I would enjoy, two lap events normally don’t do it for me, but this was so beautiful I managed 4! It was easy to navigate and everyone running was so friendly! It actually didn't feel repetative. There were lots of people walking dogs, but there was no problem with this, they moved for me and I moved for them! The cake was awesome – I even picked up a prize! Whoop! I would totally recommend this event to anyone! My non running Mum event went out an completed three laps and is still buzzing!! I will be back!
    • Did the event in 2017

As this is the cakeathon, there was a competition for the different cakes that had been made the runners & spectators. There are some talented bakers out there. The race briefing was like other SVN events with outline of the route & any achievements people had made. The course itself isn't the most exciting, there is a pond, some statues & often see the eurostar & HS1 train. It is a slightly undulating course but nothing too horrible. This is a timed event, & as such at the end of each lap you have to decide if you want to continue & get your card stamped or ring the bell & finish. At the end of each lap, there is an aid station & loads of amazing cake. If you decide to finish then there is an epic medal & goody bar with chocolate, crisps & beer. These events are great fun, relaxed with great support, but often you eat more calories than your run off.

Gosh, I loved this event!! It was well organised, everyone was super friendly and the course was actually really nice.I'm not really a "laps" person but for this type of event it works really well. Each lap was 3.75 miles, and was a mix of tarmac and trail. After each lap, you get your tag punched and its upto you whether you finish or continue on with the race! The race HQ was small but had everything you need - drinks, cakes and toilets. The race director gave everyone the race briefing at the beginning and that was that. We were free to run as much or as little as we wanted and eat as much cake or as little as we wanted in the 6 hours the event was open for!Everyone involved in the organisation of the event was really friendly and helpful! There weren't too many runners out on the course at any one time, so we didn't really disturb any pedestrians or other users of the park.My friend and I both brought homemade cakes, and the selection at the event was amazing!! Trophies are handed out as part of the cake awards, which adds an extra element of fun to the day.The medal is amazing, and the goody bag is full with goodies is the form of crisps, chocolate and cider/beer!!I think it's definitely worth trying an SVN event, there's loads on offer if Cake isn't the thing for you!! I'm looking forward to trying a few more in the future!

Wow, this was my third obstacle course race and easily the best so far. Being held on their own permenant site and not having to move obstacles to different locations makes a huge difference. The variety and sheer number of obstacles is immense, some brilliant ones to tackle both physically and mentally. Loads of mud and water so be prepared to get very muddy.  We did the 12k version which turned out to be 13.5k and they also run a 7k route and for those insane enough a 60k option!!!Brilliant organisation, marshalls everywhere and a great medal and finishers t-shirt. The event village is also great. Not many people out on the course supporting but enough other competitors you wouldn't really notice. We have already signed up for Nuclear Fallout in November, it's going to be cold!!!

Only missed the Spartan warrior who used to get us all hyped up at the starting line!

Really good course layout, tough terrain with great obstacles, very well organised.   The start of the race was sorely lacking mr Spartan who always creates a great atmosphere, which was lacking this time around. Also the spectators were very restricted on what they could view compared to Elton hall, not as many freebies compared to other years. Still a great OCR event but atmosphere needs improvement
