    The Fan Dance Summer Edition

    About the event
    From the organiser

The Fan Dance is a gruelling 24km non-navigational race over two sides of Pen Y Fan, the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons. This infamous route has long been a part of SAS (Special Air Service) and SBS (Special Boat Service) Selection and is considered the yardstick of a candidate's potential to perform well on Test Week and ultimately pass the Special Forces Selection programme.

Starting at the iconic old red phone box the race goes straight up to the summit checkpoint of Pen Y Fan and, after descending "Jacob's Ladder", continues along an undulating stone vehicle track (the "Roman Road") to the second checkpoint which also serves as a tea stop and turnaround point. Then, taking the route in reverse, racers climb back up "The Fan" via Jacob's ladder and pass through the summit checkpoint a second time before legging their way back down to the finish at the old red phone box.

The route is a real lung buster that throws everything at you, including the elements. There are steady slopes that allow a solid jogging pace, shocking inclines that have you almost on your hands and knees, loose stone tracks that require cautious foot placements and a forested vehicle track that allows for some rapid going. Even SAS recruits at the height of their physical abilities regard beating the clock in this event as a serious challenge, and all know its capacity to hurt. Aside from the race aspect of this event, just getting to the end is an accomplishment and something to be proud of.

The Fan Dance is open to ANYONE looking for a unique challenge: be it personal, competitive, as a sponsored participant in aid of your favourite charity or as part of a team building exercise. As per real Special Forces Selection, the event will be staged in both summer and winter (both load-bearing and clean fatigue).

This event is brilliant! My favourite race ever! It is run in Summer and Winter on the SAS route as per the regiments tests by ex-SAS. Your aim is get round in 4hrs. The issue is a mountain in the way and it’s a 15m TAB not run... TAB is tactical advance to battle. So you have to have everything required to survive and engage the enemy... well stay warm and cook. You can do it clean, you can do it Sat and Sunday and Saturday night... so suddenly it’s an Ultra. The atmosphere is brilliant And the views on the hills amazing. You learn a lot on the race and in prep about survival and I felt it really helped me prioritise for the MDS - even though it’s totally different. The organisers are passionate about supporting ordinary people to complete and that really comes through. Mainfield backpack weight in boots is 16kg so you will need to strength train. Good luck

As always with an Activity Events Wales race it was very slick and well organised.

This is a great event for those just starting out in multi sport or for those of us that have been beasting ourselves for a few years!

I'm going to get the bad point out the way early, this race (for a sprint) is really expensive! nigh on £80 for a sprint is lots of ££££'s.

the good points, a nice afternoon race (4pm start for my wave) not having to get up at 5am to travel was brilliant, the finish in the square is really goof and my wife said it was brilliant for the spectators.

The swim is in one of the docks and pretty quick, a longish run to t1 and then out on a closed road (may explain the high cost of the race) multi lap pan flat bike course and then onto a lovely seaside run before the run down the red carpet to finish in the town square.

This race would get 5/5 from me if it wasn't so costly.

    • Did the event in 2018

My first time at sprint triathlon distance so I was extremely nervous. I didn't need to be as this event was very well organised and the helpers/wardens etc along the course were excellent.Even when I emailed last week about my starting Wave the advice I received was brilliant (and the response immediate). The transition area was very well layed out with each Wave clearly marked. Bikes were checked going in, and checked again going out (for security). Officials were on hand to ask answer any questions. I had several - all were dealt with.Once the bike and kit was set it was back over to change into my wetsuit and then after an hour waiting around over to the swim start. Wave One went first after their briefing - some ahead of the start point. Once they started it was time for my briefing. Very good too. Plenty of nervous first timers. The into the cold Swansea Dock water.30 second warning was given and then the hooter went. Off we go. I stayed at the back as I was worried about being swam over. As it happens I overtook several people but ended up fighting my way around as some people clearly were not looking where they were going. The final 100 metres as we swum towards the exit point was also tough as everyone tried to fit into a two metre wide exit gate. By this time I was more ruthless (having learnt quickly) and just swam - regardless of who was around. Marshall helped me up onto the ramp as I was a bit dizzy.Short 350metre run over to transition and onto the bike. Race Referee's in attendance to watch we were doing it all correcntly. I was - and off out onto the flat course. Love it. I thought I was going fast, but the guys on Aero bikes were flying along. Amazing to watch.Once the bike was done it was out onto the promenade for the run. There is no better than Swansea on a nice day. 5k in and it was the finish at Castle Gardens and a roaring crowd.I pulled my kids over the barrier and they ran with me to the finish line where they too had a medal.Done.So final thoughts - what an amazing event, helped by the Sun being out and the crowds turning out in force. As a new triathlete I would recommend this event to all those thinking about going into it. From registration through to the race day it has gone really well.My only real complaint - I took my family (wife and two children, 7 and 5). There was not much for them to do during the day. A few mobile ice cream vans would have been handy. The lack of toilet cubicles around was also an issue. There should have been some around the transition area. Several of the pubs had free toilets for the day - but not ideal taking two young children in and out.

I have done this event a few times and I have to say its still the best event for finishers tshirts! Really bright and snazzy.

My only niggle this year was the change of start line to slightly out of town. This was a pain to get to as roads were shut. But this is only me being awkward.

I'm delighted to say I'm signed up for 2019.

My first ever ultra .... And first ever marathon distance . Absolutely amazing atmosphere .,everyone was so welcoming and encouragement was in abundance. Was a very hot day and plenty of water /drinks and food was supplied. If it wasn't for the fact that we are expecting an addition to the family I would be doing it again this year. I will however be volunteering to help out on the race day this year. Give back what you can.

First ever 100k, Marshalls were great knew what they were doing and supportive when things got tough. Aid stations were like buffets, things to eat and drink for everyone. Route was beautiful and easy to navigate.

I did this Ultra in 2018.

It had an extremely friendly vibe throughout the entire day. From the race briefing where every one really was made to feel welcome, through every check point and again at the finish.

2018 had a new slightly different route which had a much better finish than the previous year I thought, as this time it finished in the harbour by the pub with a big crowd cheering everyone in! It really was something else after 8 hours of slogging up and down the amazing but brutal course. The course is very interesting, through some stunning countryside it has to be said. It was well
marked out and I didn’t get lost at all (which was a bit unexpected!)

The checkpoints were all extremely well stocked too, with loads of selection and they all had very friendly volunteers at every one of them.

I will be back again this year and I really can’t wait to do it all again (I just hope the weather isn’t quite so hot this time, it really didn’t help!)

Highly recommended if you want to go to a summer festival with a bit more of a healthy atmosphere, daylight activities and potentially less chance of hangover!

first time taking part in this one and I loved it. Really well organised from start to finish.  One of the smaller events I’ve attended and well managed.  Plenty of pacers for a variety of different times to help get a PB. (Especially Gary who helped me!)The course is downhill for the first half and then a steady incline for second half. Fabulous marshals at various points.  Great all round, couldn’t fault it.
    • Did the event in 2018

Let me start with a little brag, I knocked 4 minutes off my PB at this race! If I can PB here, so can you. Registration was a doddle and very good value for money, information was easy to find and everyone involved were very helpful. There was plenty of parking right next to the start finish line, with a handy cafe and toilet block on site. Everything was so well organised that the start line was full of relaxed people, that’s a first. The route was fairly flat with only one hill just before mile 7. The route was easy to navigate along forestry tracks and tarmac paths. The scenery lacked a little, but I was there to get a PB, not sightsee!!The marshalls were fantastic. They were so helpful, full of encouragement and energy, despite the rain. The local support was good too, it’s obviously a friendly part of Wales!I loved the finish line experience. Clearly, the local funny guy was on the PA system and he had a lot to say about the local runners. As I crossed the line by myself, it was nice to hear my name and my club mentioned. He also gave me a bit of ribbing, because I overshot the medals and goody bags as I tried to slow down! It was nice to have a bit of a personal touch and some friendly banter as you finish a tough run. The t-shirts are really nice and the medals look brilliant. On top of that, we got a goody bag full of sweet treats to help us recover!I would definitely recommend this race for everyone from a novice to a seasoned runner trying to shave some time off their PB.Ill be back next year, hoping to drop into the 1:30’s and improve on my PB!
    • Did the event in 2018

This is a half marathon that lulls you into a false sense of secutrity with the first 6.5 miles almost entirely down hill. But of course what goes down must go back up! After making the most of the downhill section, it's a shock to the system to turn a corner and climb gradually for what feels like an eternity. Thankfully it lashed down for the whole race, it would not have been fun on one of the many hot days we've had recently. This is a beautiful and rewarding course and very well organised by the Port Talbot Harriers, would recommend it to anyone particularly if you're looking for a different kind of half.

The beautifully maintained waters and shore of the Blue Flag awarded beach are host to the 1.5 km swim and parts of the 10k run, whilst the 37k bike course gives a relaxing feel to the route!

Once again Activety Wales put on a really good race, the atmosphere at their events is brilliant, they always get tehlocals out to support. The course is a tough one with some steep climbs on the bike and run but the beauty of the Gower scenary easily distracts you from the tired legs!A great value race and one I'm sure I'll be back to do again.

Organised by activity Wales who are used to doing some pretty big events so the organisation at this event was top notch. The setting is beautiful. This event manages to maintain the feel of a small friendly triathlon but combine it with expert organisation. Even the rain couldn't dampen the marshals and spectators spirits.

didn't have a chance to register Friday evening sonatas flapping turning up, but it was all made very straight forward with little stress, breifing was nice an In depth which was appreciated as I didn't have time to completely go through the race pack with a fine tooth comb. Enjoyed the race as everything was laid on very clearly and efficiently. Volunteers were superb and encouraging which made the event even better as the weather conditions weren't great. Really enjoyed, thank you guys

The first addition of the Cardiff Epic Trail 10k went down a blast this year, selling out in just a FEW WEEKS! Hundreds of people turned up on a hot day in July to soak up the pure beauty of Fforest Fawr.

The route within the Forest has certainly got that key element of Tough and comprises some stunning views, including the historic Castell Coch.

If you havent been to a Tough Runner event before, youre in for a surprise! We like to think of it as more than just a race, we make extra effort to make sure its a day for you to remember!

I've done a few trail races this year and each one has its own uniqueness to it, and this one was no exception. Cardiff Epic Trail certainly lived up to its name. With the glorious backdrop of Fforest Fawr as the setting for this race, runners were shaded by the trees as they wound their way along the route. This was a welcome relief from the oppressive. With lovely, long sections of winding downhill trails you were lulled into a false sense of security and it was easy to forget that as far as trail runs are concerned, what goes down must come back up again. And up we went. Up, up, up and up some more of the most brutal hills I've tackled on a trail run. We're talking stopping for breath, bent double, wondering whether you have the strength to go on. But with a name like Cardiff Epic Trail, no one ever said it was going to be easy. After all, flat is boring, right? Really impressive medal and a great welcome at the finish line where you were greeted with bottles of water, as many sweets as you could shove down, and a medal placed around your neck by the local Police Community Support Officers. All in all, a great experience. 10/10 would run again.

This is the second time I have raced this event. Last month is was hot and lovely. This time, much cooler and a little wet. None the less, it’s a nice friendly race regardless of the weather and the conditions were still fine and enjoyable. The lake was fuller this time due to the extra rain we had since the July race. This was good as it minimised the weeds catching on you in the swim. Pre brief we go in to climatise. Then a quick brief and straight forward. The swim is easy to navigate and there are lots of yellow bouys and water safety around the course. It’s aways a wetsuit Swim too.The run is easy to navigate and well marshalled. Two laps around the lake on a foot path and a few geese along the way to add to the scenery. Cheap and friendly. Cafe and showers and free parking too.  I recommend this series of races to anyone that is local and likes a race during the week.

Gower was the first place in Britain to be designated an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' (AONB). The unique peninsula is a protected haven for some of the richest and most varied wildlife habitats in the UK. The coastal trails here are set against an awe-inspiring natural backdrop of cliff tops, downland, woodland, sand dunes and world famous beaches. This trail running paradise is very accessible from most parts of the UK.

Nothing out of the ordinary for a coastal trail event. Course was more or less as expected. I keep going back-and-forth on whether I would've preferred to run in the other direction. The majority of the muddiest spots were towards the end when legs were quite wobbly already. Saw a few people slip and fall. Advice to future runners - shoes w/ excellent traction.

After attending the Winter version of this race that was cold and mucky (Just the way I like it :-0), I thought I would give the Summer race a go and drag some of my team mates along with me, telling them it was a brilliant race and they would love it.Well Diane cursed me all the way around and Chris turned an ankle 2k in oops I think i,m off their Christmas card list haha, no it wasnt all that bad, Chris just landed awkward on a downhill section but managed to complete the race with me firmly by his side to ensure he got back OK. Diane messsaged me and said she loved it later that evening, she loved the relaxed atmosphere (one you dont tend to get at big road races), she perked up at the prize giving when she realised she was second in her age category whish was amazing because this was her first ever fell race.Me, well I loved every minute of it, the hilly start, the bewtifully rugged terain, the down hill sections, water crossings the lot, actually Chris turning his ankle was a blessing in disguise for me because my legs were shot after running around the Brecon Beacons the day before 10.6m of madness. This race is firmly planted in my calender for next year, both the winter and summer series. The briefing was top notch with a bit of humour chucked in for good measure, covering all the sailaint points to ensure everyone had a safe race, marshalls were jovial and encouraging (probably because they werent running it pffffft) and the route was well marked with ticker tape. Its not often that you see the last person in a race being celebrated and clapped in with such vigour and encouragement, the lady that came last also got a bottle of wine for her efforts, im sure its a race she wont forget and for many others this will stick in their mind.Trail and Fell running is a different animal with a different class of clientel that I just love.
