Route information
As Keen As Mustard are super excited to be working with Bewl Water again for our 2023 event. There will be superb, undulating 6k, 10k and 21k courses and super reservoir open water swimming.
The 6k and 10k course has easy entry and exits into the water and amazing trail running through the woods and tracks around the reservoir. The 6k, 10k and 21k courses head out along the shore, with swims across the natural bays, runs through woods and around the grass tracks. The 6k and 10k courses then weave their way back to the finish as the 21k continues around the reservoir.
The 21k course covers some awesome trails, quiet roads and serious hills on a 7k run through and around the nature reserve . Grass tracks take you back into wooded areas for a couple of swims before heading back around to the the finish. These are epic courses in and around Bewl Water and the surrounding area, you will love it. The 21k run sections are demanding on the latter part of the course, so plan your race well.

Withdrawal from the race and retiring
Marshals and race directors’ decisions are final. Abusive language and/or behaviour towards the marshals, organisers or directors will not be tolerated.
The marshals or race organisers can refuse to let a team or solo participant continue if they judge them to be too fatigued or in a physical/emotional condition that would endanger themselves or others. Please return to the race finish and hand in your number band.
If you decide to retire/stop during the race please report to the nearest marshal. Do not leave the course without telling a marshal. You must then return to race finish to hand in your number band . Failure to return your number band will result in a £10 charge.
Hazards
A proportion of the run is off road and through some rough ground. Please be aware that there may be unexpected natural hazards i.e lumps, bumps, holes, mud. It is an adventure race so there may be hazards to climb over or navigate through.
Please only enter and exit the water where you are directed to do so. The swim entrances and exits have been chosen to limit ecological damage to the lakes and the river banks. They are also chosen to ensure whilst they are safe, they are also a challenge and add an element of adventure to the race. Marshals will be on hand to help you. Please note that you may feel disorientated as you stand up to exit the swims. Please take your time and listen to the marshal’s instructions.
Assistance
If you feel you are struggling in the swim or need any assistance in the swim please roll over onto you back and put your arm in the air. This will attract attention and the safety team will attend to you. With this in mind you are only permitted to swim on your front.
You may hold onto the front of any safety boat and when you are ready, continue with the swim as long as you make no forward progress whilst you are resting.
Unlike triathlon, you can help fellow competitors. We actively encourage you to help each other but you cannot have outside assistance.
The Event Course
The courses will be clearly signed and swim entry and exit points are marshalled. Be observant and follow your colour arrows and tape
The final route maps will be available 4 weeks before the event in the Competitors Handbook. This will be available on the website, posted on social media and the link to it will be in your final email, which will be sent to, once entries have closed. Your final email is sent in bulk mail so it may end up in your Junk/spam folder.
The Race Director or Safety Officer reserves the right to change the race route at any point up to and including the day of the event.
Participants will be entering and exiting the bodies of water at various points, which will be marked and marshalled. Whilst every effort will be made to ensure participants safety you must be aware that being a natural environment there is every possibility of debris being present underfoot. For this reason the wearing of trainers / running shoes is mandatory throughout the race.
Diving is not permitted.
Taking the wrong course may lead to disqualification or added time. The race director has the final decision.
