Route information
This will be a stunning marathon route, taking one large, undulating lap of Lake Windermere, passing Hawkshead, Newby Bridge, Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside.
Over half the course is run on partially traffic-free roads or roads with a dedicated running lane.
The marathon will start from Brathay Hall and head anti-clockwise towards Hawkshead where you'll run through the historic and picturesque village with whitewashed houses, rchaways and alleyways, courtyards and squares. The section of the course in Hawkshead will be pedestrianised and with a lot of support from spectators.
At the 7 mile mark, you'll reach the 'Devil's Gallop' where you'll have to tackle a 200ft climb over half a mile but will be rewarded with a downhill respite towards Newby Bridge. Runners will cross the River Leven in Newby Bridge and be greeted with a cheering from spectators at The Swan Hotel.
Bowness-on-Windermere will provide some excellent scenery, with Bowness Pier right on the water of Lake Windermere. Always a popular destination, there's sure to be spectators with loud support and encouragement.
Heading towards the finish at Brathay, there'll be stunning views towards the Langdale Pikes at Low Wood Bay, only 2 miles to the finish.

Did the race in 2022
Course was rolling hills (challenging), on roads so traffic was an issue at points. Exiting the event was the main negative as the car park exit point was on a single track, which was unfortunately the same one runners ran up to finish the marathon!

It took too long to get out of the car park at the end, don’t know what the answer is though given needing to wait for gaps in the finishers?!

What an awesome day! The support from locals and the Marshalls was brilliant. Can’t wait to come back next year and do it all again.
