The theme and thoughts behind this race series are to help with conservation project funding in Africa. As some of you might be aware of, big game parks in Southern Africa and in other parts of Africa are struggling to curtail the fight of the ever present dastardly deeds of the poachers that proliferate throughout Africa.

Their acts of barbarism are despicable and they need to be stopped in their tracks, to prevent mass scale poaching operations, this is on the rise now too due to lack of funding brought about by this dreadful pandemic which has curtailed tourism revenue coming into African countries due of course to the lockdown and enforced travel restrictions.

10% of all proceeds will directly benefit both Save the Rhino and Tusk
. Save the Rhino aim to stop poaching and habitat loss so that, in 20 years’ time, rhinos will no longer be Critically Endangered. While Tusk are a conservation charity who amplify progressive conservation initiatives across Africa and fight the ever present threats of poaching and habitat loss.

Each week you will have 48 hours from the start of the race to complete the distance and upload your race data back on this page. Simply record your run using your favourite run tracking app or GPS watch, snap a screenshot of your completed race and a selfie (bonus points for making them Big 5 themed) and upload it to the finishers' gallery.

Bespoke finishers' medals will be awarded for each single stage of the VE event, with the special medal awarded afterwards to all the series finishers that do all 5 of the race distances. All the medals are bespoke wooden medals made in the UK by Chris Dolan at Swift Supplies and are eco friendly, made using laser technology.

Frequently asked questions

How do I record my activity?
To record your activity, you will need to download an activity tracking app that is able to track your distance and time. Popular apps include Strava, Nike Run Club, MapMyRun, and RunKeeper, and are available in the app store for free on your phone. For more details on our favourite tracking apps check out our blog post.
Are there time cutoffs for Virtual Events?
Virtual Events are fantastic in that they can be completed at any pace and location. The only restriction on how long you take is the event submission window, which is generally 48 hours, giving you lots of time to complete your event.
Can I go further than the race distance?
Yes, you can complete a distance further than what the event requires. All you need to do is input distance travelled and time, and we will adjust it down to the time it took to complete the event distance.
Can I do my distance over a few days and break it up and add up my total time to submit?
Unfortunately, while you can complete the distance at any pace, it must be completed in one go. In order to make the virtual experience as close to a physical event as possible, please submit your total elapsed time that it took to complete your chosen distance rather than total moving time. This will take into account any breaks or stops taken during completion, and mimic the experience of a physical event.
If offered, when will the post-race goodies be mailed?
Any race goodies or merchandise will be posted by the Event Organiser as soon as possible after the event. Please contact the Event Organiser if you have further enquiries about race swag.
Can I take part at any time of day?
You will find the event start time on the event page. Once the event starts, you can complete the event any time within the submission window. Make sure to upload your result and picture within the submission window to verify your results!
