The Butcombe Trail Ultra is a fantastic route around 6 pubs in the Mendip Hills. Mostly off road, these challenging courses aren't for the faint hearted. They will, however, be extremely rewarding and show off some of the best views in the area.

Route information

The Butcombe Ultra routes are mostly off-road and take in beautiful running country and fantastic views as they criss-cross the Mendips. Starting at The Swan, Rowberrow runners will set off on an undulating route towards Compton Martin, where they will find the first checkpoint. The routes then continue on South through Hinton Blewett, Priddy and Axbridge. A tough 200m climb follows, with fantastic views from the top of Cheddar.

Some more ascending before a short descent into Bleadon for checkpoint 6. A woodland section takes runners out onto a golf course before crossing the motorway and heading into the final checkpoint (for the 50 mile race) at Winscombe. Enjoy the mostly flat final section to take you back the The Swan.

These routes require self-navigating and each competitor will need to carry 1:25000 scale paper maps which cover the route.

There will be free parking at The Swan. Please note the parking is event specific so follow the signs on the day and do not park in the normal pub car park.

Cut Off Times

There is a maximum time of 15 hours to complete the 50 mile race and 16 hours for the 56-miler. The additional 6 mile section is tough, and takes the winner around 1h30 and the tail runners around 3h. Runners should therefore be confident they could finish the 50-mile race in 13 hours if they wish to enter the 56.

Age Requirements

All runners must be aged 20 or older on the day of the event.

Entry Requirements

All entrants must have run a marathon since 1 Jan 2021. This doesn’t need to have been in a formal race, it could have been a 26+ mile training run. You will not need to provide proof of this, we trust you to tell the truth as it is in your own interest.

Navigation

The races are self-navigation and competitors must carry paper maps at all times. The Butcombe Trail itself is waymarked along much of its length but this can be patchy, and the BTU56 follows a different route for the middle 12 miles. There will be marshals at key points. These are updated regularly so always make sure you have the latest version.

Aid Stations

There are 7 checkpoints on the 50 Mile route and 8 on the 56 Mile route. These will all have fully stocked aid stations with all the drinks and nutrition you can imagine.
