Really enjoyable, well signed and organised event, the finishers medal is event specific, not the generic one that some of the bigger events have now, but it names the event and the year, which was a nice touch. My only gripe, which wasn't enough to lower my rating was that I was waiting for 40 minutes to start, maybe if there are so many entrants, it might be prudent to have staggered starts where on registration, an 'earliest start time (8.00am/8.30am/9.00am etc) is allocated at registration, that way wearen't stood around getting cold. I would still recommend the event and shall look forward to it next year.
This is a cracking early season 'hit out'. There are no massively long or steep climbs, just plenty of undulations and sections where you can test yourself, if you are of a mind to do so. The headwind was, however, unrelenting The route is mainly on quiet B roads, parallel to the M6 between Penrith and Tebay and then heading back north via Appleby. The food stop at Appleby is a little after half - way. Well stocked with tea, buns and good cheer. It would be tempting to stay a little longer than necessary. I was hoping for a little help from the wind on the way back, but there was little. Just a tricky cross wind. There is a little sting in the tail - a sustained climb at around 55 miles just to keep the riders honest. My two small quibbles; one was the inexplicable delay at the start. Most riders were set and ready to go at around 7.45 but the first wave didn't get away until 8.15. I'm sure there was a good reason for it but given that there was a threat of bad weather it did cause a little wave of concern. The other was the section on the A66 at around 50 miles. I appreciate that the road had to be crossed but the section had a bridge with lights and also a section of roadworks. It just kind of broke up what had been a good rhythm. So there you are - small blips on a generally very good ride.
Great day out, first sportive for me but if they are all like this then ill be doing a few more!! Great course with a real sting of a climb on the last 4km which kill the legs!!
Thoroughly enjoyed the event, good course and very good food at the end of the event. I think the event could be expanded and possibly offer a slightly longer course for the more experienced rider? Some local knowledge would possibly be beneficial there. I believe the event HQ could do with being slightly bigger for the size of the event as the start was very congested. Other than that the food provided at the end of the event was very good. I cant comment on the food stop in Appleby as I didnt stop. On the whole an excellent event, which I will be returning to year in, year out.
