Route information
One of the most treasured components of the SILVA GL3D™ is that participants simply enter the event, and then choose whichever course they prefer on the day. This could be the Wainwright course for all three days, or for instance Wainwright on day 1, Café on day 2, and so on with any ‘mix-and-match’ combination possible.
Regardless of course choice, participants should expect mostly mountain trails and footpaths, along ridges and through valleys, rather than contouring, bee-lining and bogs. Unlike a mountain marathon or orienteering event with complex navigation, the emphasis is on long mountain journeys, spectacular scenery and enjoying an amazing mountain experience!
The Cafe: Daily average ~20km/1000m*
This course is specifically aimed at walkers, and runners who wish to take their time, and offers a route more focused on valley traverses and 'middle mountain' terrain between the overnight camps. That said, the Café Course does of course occasionally feature lower mountain summits. Most importantly, it is strategically designed to lead you to the very best Lake District cafés (or pubs) where possible in the area!
Wainwright: Short: daily average ~26km/1750m*
Next up, the short Wainwright course is aimed at those wishing to explore higher and further than the Café course. It is still possible for 'determined' walkers to complete the shorter Wainwright course days comfortably within the cut-off times (in dry weather and good visibility!)
Wainwright: Long: daily average ~33km/2500m*
The long Wainwright course is aimed at those who want a bit more of a test, and can maintain a solid pace (perhaps we can put it as walking the ascents and 'scampering' along on the flats and downhills). Please do not set off intending to exclusively walk the long Wainwright course as you will likely not make the cut-off times!
Expert: Daily average ~40km/3000m*
The expert course is definitely for runners and it is not possible for walkers to complete it within the cut-off times. You may visit some more obscure summits - Birketts for instance - in addition to experiencing some longer sections of route choice to challenge your navigational prowess.
This course is ideal for those training for events such as the Dragon’s Back Race or Cape Wrath Ultra, or who simply fancy a good leg-(and brain)-stretcher of a weekend!

Can I bring my dog to the SILVA Great Lakeland 3Day?
Absolutely! If you would like to bring your dog, you will just need to ensure they are always under control e.g. on a lead or harness when out on the fells and at the overnight camps.
Is the SILVA Great Lakeland 3Day marked?
No, the whole event is up to your navigational skills!
Are there feed stations along the routes at the SILVA Great Lakeland 3Day?
Not exactly! You may pass a café or a village en route, but expect (apart from the café course) to be up on the tops much of the day. Please be self-sufficient and carry enough sustenance and emergency rations to keep you going all day.
When do we find out the locations of the overnight campsites for the SILVA Great Lakeland 3Day?
Entrants will only find out those locations when they pick up their race pack at registration.
