THE COURSES

10 Mile

Starting and finishing on Clarence Esplanade in Southsea, the fast and flat course takes you through Old Portsmouth, home of the Portsmouth Cathedral, before entering the Historic Dockyard. Here you will granted permission to run past the Royal Navy’s current naval ships, and some of the most famous in the world – including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose museum.

After exiting the Dockyard you reach the halfway point on Winston Churchill Avenue, before making your way back towards Southsea Common, where you’ll complete the final two miles on the scenic seafront.

The course is steeped in history dating as far back as 1212 and features charity cheering points, boost zones, bands on the run and unrivalled support from local residents and spectators.

5K

This fast and flat 5k course is perfect for beginner runners or those who are looking for a personal best across a shorter running route. Runners, joggers and walkers will be treated to scenic views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight as they start on Clarence Esplanade. They then head past Clarence Pier and Southsea Common before crossing the finish line close to the Pyramids Centre on the sea front.

Mini and Junior Course

Both the Junior and Mini routes start on Clarence Esplanade, opposite the Skate Park. From here, all the runners head west past the D-Day museum and Blue Reef Aquarium.

Mini runners then turn right into Serpentine Way while Junior runners head up to a turnaround point next to Mozzarella Joes. Both runs then head up Serpentine Way and down Lady’s Mile to reach Avenue De Caen. The kids then head for the finish back on Clarence Esplanade.

With a nautical themed fancy dress, it’s a fun way to get your kids excited about running and a chance to experience their own finish line moment and wear their medals with pride.

An awesome event with such history - amazing to see people who have run every single year still doing the full 10 miles! The course is fantastic and the event really well organised from start to finish - loads of entertainment points, booming tunes, cheer zones and tonnes of support. Add this one to your calendar or bucket list!

I love this event. It is one of my annual races now. The route is flat wirh a nice sea view at the start and end of the course. There is plenty on offer at the race village with plenty of refreshments stalls and post race massage. The volunteers are very helpful in helping you find your way around.

The event has a great atmosphere along the whole route. It’s a flat route so perfect for PBs and running through the dockyard is amazing. Parking is available on the common and the Park and Ride can be a bit hit and miss, but that aside, it’s an annual challenge for me and my husband, and now our 3 year old will be joining this year for the Mini.

Everything about this Run was how it was described and more so much so I went straight home and signed up with the lovely ladies I ran it with last year for this year. We have also sold (as in signed up) it to some other people too!
The only little blip on the day was one of my friends was given a medal for the wrong race but was exchanged straight away to the correct one.
The organisation, marshals, atmosphere and support from the crowds was awesome, can’t wait for this, this year as the training for me hasn’t been easy but I know on the day all of the above will get me over the finish line!

I really enjoyed this run. Great scenery, excellent parking and start very well organised. Long queues for portaloos but thats to be expected with such a big event (the queues did move quite quickly). My only issue is with leaving Portsmouth afterwards - my advice, hang around a bit and wait until roads are fully open. I walked along the seafront towards Portsmouth and had lunch before leaving (mind you I wouldn't have wanted to do this if the weather hadn't been so good). I will be back next year as this race is easy for me to get to.

Well organised from start to finish as well as before and after.
According to Stu “it’s always Sunny in Pompey” and 2018 was no exception.
The crowd were amazing and a crafty sip of Guinness at the Eastney Tavern added to the sheer joy of the day

The event is brilliant. It's fast, flat and the atmosphere and support is the best I've experienced. It's on the coast, so it can get cold and windy. You might want to wear an old top to keep warm which you can discard when the race starts.Access to the event is super easy and there is shed-loads of parking....it's just those last two miles along the seafront... so tough. But good.

I have run this great 10 mile in 2016, 2017 & have already booked my place for 2018. It has been pretty cold each year and it's definitely worth wearing warm clothes that you can throw to the side just before the start. They are collected and given to charity, much better than a bin bag that some people wore.

I thought it was brilliant, and definitely one of the best races I did in 2017. The course was enjoyable, pretty flat and had a lot of crowd support. I enjoyed the short section near the end where we passed others runners and managed to spot my slower husband going the other way as I got into my sprint finish! The one thing I found was that the queues for the toilets were massive, and I had to leap one of the barriers to make my start time - so definitely make sure youve plenty of time!! And maybe bring your own loo roll!

Only thing that let's this event down is the bag drop off. The queue is always way too long and so many people miss the start of race and warm up. It's such a shame as everything else is perfect.

Loved it more than I thought I would !I went to Uni in Portsmouth and half thought the weather is going to be shocking ! The weather was fine and even the wind at the end couple miles didnt phase me :) great support and a super flat course !It helped that I had lovely friends and company to run with!Only thing which couldnt be helped on the day is the baggage area was a little bit haphazard on the day !

Its always a fantastic event, with a great set up and atmosphere. Compared to other events ive Done in london etc, the operation always seems to run smoothly. Its also a good course for spectators. The bands at every mile are also a great addition!

Its a fabulous event and a great course - just a shame the storm put paid to fast times. Just one criticism is the lack of recognition for Veteran/ Masters athletes at the Great Runs. I was 1st over 50 at Portsmouth and any other race would present age group prizes.

Great experience although ended up treating it as a hard training run as I didnt taper for it. Only thing to add perhaps was a big unexpected congestion to drop the bags in the bagging area which made the way to the start line in time an extra bit more stressful. Otherwise great running t-shirt, medal and good atmosphere. Didnt enjoy the strong headwind in the last 2 miles, though!

I have done this race more times than I can remember and I have always enjoyed it. A flat course with lots is support. Well organised and a great atmosphere. My kids have done the mini and junior runs and we have also done the 5k. Theres lots to do in and around Portsmouth and Southsea - so why not make a weekend of it. I come from Milton Keynes, but that is what we do, and we love it!

I put alot of effort into this race. Trained hard and drove over 150 miles to take part. I was hoping the race would not dissappoint and it didn't. The organisation was amazing! Everything went so smoothly. Baggage was spot on. The build up the race was great and really motivated me. I started pretty near the front and didn't get boxed in behind slower runners which also was cool. When i went through the finish they had everything laid out really well and i got my medal and goody bag. The results were up very fast too. Amazing day out ! Defintley want to do it again this year!

Luckily we'd traveled down to Portsmouth early and got one of the last few spaces at the park and ride outside the city, any later would have been in trouble. Will park at the seafront this year. Course is lovely and flat, had a headwind for the final 1.5 miles so dont burn yourself out too quickly!

Route is the best Ive ran, Flat and Fast which is always good. Brilliant sights evenly split around the route. Start line was poorly organised with the start areas poorly policed and people running through or jumping in. Baggage drop off was the single worst Ive ever experienced! Dreadful. The bands/music along the route was well organised though. Atmosphere was ok, patches of heavy crowds, but also empty patches.

The race itself was excellently organised. The atmosphere was brilliant, plenty of support around the course (medics, drink stations etc.) and the route was clear and on a good surface. The start was great with the warm up and it was a very easy finishing area to navigate through. The facilities, event, course and general atmosphere was fantastic and Ill be trying to get in to do it again next year! Just beware the last 2km down the coast, the wind is brutal!!

I'm not one to glibly give 5 stars in a review, but the GSR2017 really was a five star event. The course was flat and fast, and also picturesque. The encouragement from locals and the atmosphere was incredible, far exceeding what I expected. I think the only minor complaint was that I was unclear where and how to leave bags, though I got there in the end. I also had a problem with my chip time, but the techies quickly corrected my official time when I linked them to my Strava track.Overall, 10/10 would race again.
