Route information
Whichever distance you choose, an Impact Marathon race is trail running like no other. The surreal routes taking you from winding trails to volcano summits. Each distance has something incredible and unique to offer. Take to Guatemala, rich in culture and natural beauty, and immerse yourself in Impact Marathon's cause. Discover the exceptional nation of Guatemala in a way that is simply not possible any other way. As well as this, you will get to know your fellow racers, and yourself in a way you've never experienced before. This is more than a race - this is an enriching experience to last a lifetime.
Terrain Mountain, off-road, trails, and rock.
On day 6 of this awesome trip and having spent the first few days living in the stunning Athletes' Village, getting stuck in with the community projects, it’s time to run! Whether you are doing the 10k, Half marathon or Full marathon, this run will take you on a remarkably tough but beautiful trail through fincas, the surreal moonscape of the lava field that evolves and grows each year we have been creating this event. Then the most ridiculous climb of your life begins as you work your way up towards the bubbling crater of Pacaya Volcano. This will not be an ‘average’ race, so expect the unexpected.
10k - I ‘Finca’ That’s Enough
This outstanding course starts inside Finca El Amate, with a view across the four volcanoes of the region - two of which will be showing you just how active they are. You'll now be running through the fincas (small farms) on dusty and rocky trails, you will reach the Southern Lava Field. This is possibly our favourite section of any course in our series...it's like running on the moon! Outrageous! With views of the volcano rising above you, you will then turn back to take on the Finca Ascent.
Half Marathon - I ‘Lava’ This Race
Heading on an out and back route down to the Southern Lava Field, this half marathon is sure to be unlike any other you’ve done. You will begin with a downhill run through the town we support, through the fincas before arriving at the Lava Field, a moonscape land with the piping volcano up high above you. You must then prepare for a challenging second half, where you will launch into a tricky uphill climb, we call it 'The Wall' and you'll understand just why about halfway up...maybe less. Luckily you will be so distracted by the views around you that you will be at the top in no time and ready to celebrate an incredible race. Also, you get to come back down The Wall and the lava field crossing knowing you are just one gnarly little climb from home now!
Marathon - “The Beast of Pacaya”
There are some experiences that touch your life forever and this is one of them. This course has all that you have read above, but with the added joy of an extra 1000m of climbing up to an altitude of 2400m, where you will find yourself staring at the crater of an active volcano. Feel the rumble of the earth beneath your feet before you head down to the Southern Lava Field, a surreal location to run, with heat, history, and a full connection with the power of what lies beneath our feet.

Event day logistics
You should book a flight to arrive on the 27th February, ready to start the awesome itinerary lined up for you the following day.
Day 2 - 28th February - El Hato
Waking up on the first morning, you will have the chance to watch the breathtaking sunrise over Agua, Fuego and Acatanango as you begin to get into the swing of life on the project. Staying around the Athletes' Village, you will visit the village school of El Hato to see some of the amazing work SerNina does in confidence building amongst the children. You will also have the opportunity to get a feel for the terrain by heading out on one of the training runs.
In the afternoon, you will meet the SERES team and begin to learn about the methodology and work they do in each community.
Day 3 - 1st March - To Tecpan & Beyond
Today you will have an early start as you will be heading off to Tecpan, a hub town for SERES and one with a group of youth ambassadors who are truly driving change in the community. With a range of things going on here, from permaculture training to women's rights marches, you are sure to be blown away by the drive and passion of the youth in this community.
Day 4 - 2nd March - The Power of Fuego
In 2018, the Fuego Volcano erupted and changed the lives of those living on its slopes forever. The eruption displaced eight communities, who are still rebuilding their lives today. SERES works across these communities to help them build a new future. You will be visiting the Ulew Fuego...a leadership training centre that our runners catalysed the creation of. That's right, in 2017, before our first race, SERES shared this dream - we were crazy enough to back it. And now, it is alive...you are writing the next chapter in this story. You'll see how the land can be used to create massive, long-term, and sustainable impact.
Day 5 - 3rd March - Freedom of Antigua
Day 5 will be nice and relaxed before race day. You can head down to the pool, carb load and enjoy some down time, or you can travel into colonial Antigua to get some lunch and get to know your fellow competitors better. Tonight, we will be heading across to the Volcano. So, get ready for a night of camping in the shadow of a lava flowing crater...we're sure this will be easy enough to imagine, right?
Day 6 - 4th March - Run the Live Volcano
After a very early start, you will head across to Pacaya Volcano. Prepare for some amazing views of lava flowing as the night sky glows red above the summit. Soon you will be stood at the base, ready for the race to start. Take on the stunning trails in the hardest race of your life, before arriving triumphantly at the race finish. Then enjoy the huge welcome home waiting for you at the Athletes' Village and deservedly party into the night.
Day 7 - 5th March - Homecoming
Undoubtedly with many aches and pains, you can choose whether to fly home or enjoy some of the incredible experiences organised for you that show off the very best of Guatemala.
Fundraising Information
We aim for all our Impact Runners to set and smash their own fundraising targets. Turning the fundraising model on its head, we don’t tell you what to raise, you tell us! We have a team goal of £30,000, how much can you contribute to make this possible. As a bonus, for every £1000 you raise, you’ll get £150 off your next Impact Marathon.
The fundraising is what brings the Impact Week alive and leaves a powerful legacy in the communities we seek to serve. The Impact Marathon Foundation has the goal of catalysing change and supporting tangible, grassroots organisations with our funds, affirmation, and a platform to tell their story.
In Guatemala we head right to the heart of the challenges facing the nation: young leadership.
We work with SERES, an extraordinary organisation that works with youth across the region to define their needs, hone their voice, and actively change their communities. Their projects are super holistic, tackling our connection with the land, entrepreneurship, sustainability, all whilst upskilling the youth to communicate effectively. It is unbelievable what can be achieved, against all odds, when we engage our youth to change our world.
