I was really looking forward to taking part in this race as I grew up in the local area and have since moved away, but unfortunately I had to drop out just days before as I contracted tonsillitis. I asked Island Races what I could do about it but was told they had no withdrawal policy - effectively it was either turn up, or don't. I understand this is the case with many triathlon events, but I'm not sure why? No one should be exposed to the choice of losing their entry fee or potentially putting their health at risk by competing when ill. I really believe that when these events charge £130 there should be a withdrawal/transferal/deferral policy in place. Instead I am left feeling like I have just thrown away a substantial amount of cash through no fault of my own. I appreciate there is a big cost to putting these events on but surely there should be a plan in place for when competitors can't take part. The London Marathon, Great North Run, Cardiff Half all have policies but it doesn't seem to be the case in triathlon. … read more

Route description
Route description

This is a flat triathlon but the terrain is a mixture of road, sand and seawall making it a unique but challenging course. This event was voted as the Third Best Triathlon in the UK at the Let's Do This Challenge Awards 2019.

Run:

It is almost as if Mersea Island was created for this event. The run measures 21km, exactly the circumference of the island. There is stunning scenery all the way round, mixed terrain and no lap run.

Swim:

The swim begins from the beach and is held at slack tide.

Cycle:

The cycle route takes competitors off The Island and along scenic Essex country lanes. Competitors will then head around Abberton Reservoir before turning back to the transition to begin the final leg.

The Islander -what a great race !Well organised, the swim was amazing in calm warm water, fast scenic bike course, the run around the island was slightly more challenging with some tough sections over the beach. Overall I would say highly recommended and i'll definitely be back for 2020.

I did my first sprint triathlon here last weekend, everything from parking the car, signing on / collecting race numbers and setting up transition was extremely well organised. The volunteers were very friendly, and the atmosphere was fantastic, plenty of amazing support from spectators. Top marks for the course as well, loved the bike route. 100% recommend Island Races, especially for a first tri.

What a fantastic event. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff and volunteers. From the lady on the paddle board giving me support and leading me out of the swim. The great Marshall's on the bike route supporting everyone riding past. And the bike route was fantastic. Now on the the run route truly amazing scenery yes it was tough but the best half marathon route I have every run.The marshalls on the drinks stations were full of smiles with some going beyond the call of duty and running between drinks stations with water to make sure you stayed hydrated. A special thank you to Josh and Abbie on making yet another Island event very memorable.😁😁😁😁

Another cracking event by Josh and Abbie. The new start and transition area on the esplanade was a great addition from the 2018 event. A 1 lap sea swim led onto a scenic, relatively traffic free undulating ride and then followed the run......! A challenging lap of the island over various terrain with beach sections to really sap the legs. Always a great atmosphere at the Island Races events enhanced this year by an array of local food stalls. A fantastic event already on the list for next year.

A great event in a unique setting! A friendly and welcoming vibe that some of the bigger events lack making it an ideal first middle distance for anyone looking to take things to the next step. The run is one lap of the entire island and although not hilly, the terrain was testing! Looking forward to the next one!Cheers Josh and Abi and team!

Great event, built on from what was learnt in 2018. The swim is a fairly standard sea swim (although sighting coloured buoys against the background of multicoloured beach huts was interesting (and spotting the swim exit)), then a great bike with a few undulations and then an "interesting" run. No one said it was easy but the scenery and interest makes up for the challenges of running a half marathon on trail and beach. It's a fantastic setting for a triathlon and with a bustling transition "village" and a sprint distance tri carried out on the Sunday (middle on the Saturday) it is well worth spending the weekend on Mersea. The Islander is definitely an event to watch and it is sure to become one of the classics.

Unbelievable event. The best thing for me was how unique the course is. The open water swim and beach run makes the triathlon fun and tactically brutal. The atmosphere was great too. Competitive vibes were keep on the course and the post event socialising was great. I learnt so much from everyone there. Now I’ve got a taste I want to hit it again.

What an amazing venue with stunning scenes and the off road run makes it really unique. Improvements would be brighter flags especially on the swim exit and some more signage on the run in particular the part after you enter the road then through the narrow gap into the field. One more water station would have been good, whilst I appreciate its hard with no vehicle access there was a particularly long stretch without any. Timing at the end couldn't be helped but I am not sure how accurate the results that were released are. I was second female and my times seems fairly accurate but the third woman it says was only a few seconds behind me and I know from standing at the end line this wasn't the case. SO either my time was slower or hers faster. I think overall 1.2.3 place for both male and female would also be good. Well done great event and one I have already promoted to Tri-Anglia members. We are likely to have the Norwich Tri on the last weekend in June 2020.

This is a great event with a really tough run on beach and trails. I enjoyed it, and enjoyed getting an oyster at the end. Thanks. One thing- cups for water on the bike doesn't work, particularly w/ it meaning you have to stop for water on the fastest section of the bike. I think this needs a rethink, otherwise great race :)

Really nice sea swim, followed by a gentle (almost) flat bike, and brutal run on the beach/trail/grass/...You'll have support all around the island. To summarise: awesome location, awesome triathlon but a tough one.

Thoroughly enjoyed this event, perfect swim, pretty good bike course, and a tough run course. I did say too much beach, but in hindsight it's a 70:3 it's not going to be easy. I would certainly do it again, with more beach training. 😄
