Route information
This is a flat triathlon but the terrain is a mixture of road, sand and seawall making it a unique but challenging course. This event was voted as the Third Best Triathlon in the UK at the Let's Do This Challenge Awards 2019.
Run:
It is almost as if Mersea Island was created for this event. The run measures 21km, exactly the circumference of the island. There is stunning scenery all the way round, mixed terrain and no lap run.
Swim:
The swim begins from the beach and is held at slack tide.
Cycle:
The cycle route takes competitors off The Island and along scenic Essex country lanes. Competitors will then head around Abberton Reservoir before turning back to the transition to begin the final leg.

I was really looking forward to taking part in this race as I grew up in the local area and have since moved away, but unfortunately I had to drop out just days before as I contracted tonsillitis. I asked Island Races what I could do about it but was told they had no withdrawal policy - effectively it was either turn up, or don't. I understand this is the case with many triathlon events, but I'm not sure why? No one should be exposed to the choice of losing their entry fee or potentially putting their health at risk by competing when ill. I really believe that when these events charge £130 there should be a withdrawal/transferal/deferral policy in place. Instead I am left feeling like I have just thrown away a substantial amount of cash through no fault of my own. I appreciate there is a big cost to putting these events on but surely there should be a plan in place for when competitors can't take part. The London Marathon, Great North Run, Cardiff Half all have policies but it doesn't seem to be the case in triathlon.

The Islander -what a great race !Well organised, the swim was amazing in calm warm water, fast scenic bike course, the run around the island was slightly more challenging with some tough sections over the beach. Overall I would say highly recommended and i'll definitely be back for 2020.

Having done a few triathlons at this distance before this has to be up there with one of the best. Just such a well organised event and also beautiful course.

That beach run at the end was pretty challenging but being the trooper I am I pushed through the pain barrier to finish and collect that gorgeous medal at end.
