Route description

Tackle multiple surfaces including hard packed gravel, loose chipping gravel, grass, dirt and sand.

The routes are 100% off road and take in a beautiful route around King’s Forest. The tracks allow for bunch racing and overtaking, which makes the whole race exciting from start to finish.

The number of laps determines race length with each lap equalling 26km, each lap ends with a Pit Stop with both food and mechanical support available.

King’s Cup Gravel Festival and British Gravel Championships

Full route details will be published closer to the event date.

Time Trial & Team Relay

Riders will head out from the Event HQ over fast, hard-packed gravel before being taken into the forest. Once through the woods, the route takes riders north onto tightly packed chippings. Here, riders will glide over the grass trails on their way to the next gravel section which marks the 8k point.

The link route is still plenty wide but has some overgrown sections which can easily be avoided by riders. Once at the most northerly part of the route, riders will find the turning point which is reached on tracks mainly made of gravel, sand, and grass.

The route leads riders back towards the Arena via Queen Mary Avenue and the Icknield Way. With one last deviation at the 14k park, the surface changes to firm pea gravel tracks for a loop before re-joining Icknield Way. The final stretch of the Icknield Way has a predominance of loose sand on its uneven surface, but riders will enjoy a final grass path to get them over the finish line.

*Detailed route maps will be available closer to the event date.

Gravel Race & Gran Fondo

Both routes start the off taking the same route as the Time Trial (TT), with riders enjoying fast, hard-packed pebble gravel and some loose chippings for the first 4k. The next 1k will see riders taken through the woodland where the track enjoys the benefit of vehicle tracks with a grassy surface between.

After 5k, the route deviates from the TT route. For 4k riders are taken through the woodlands over a mix of pea gravel, grass, and hard-packed sand. The route rejoins the TT route for a fast and furious stint on hard-packed chippings again.

The route turns left onto wide, grass tracks a bit, taking riders to the 15k mark, after which riders get back onto the TT route. The final stretch of the Icknield Way has a predominance of loose sand on its uneven surface. There is a change of surface from sand to grass as riders re-enter the arena.

Depending on the event category and age group riders will complete this lap 2-3 times.

  • Gravel Race - Women = 2 laps
  • Gravel Race - Men U60 = 3 laps, 60+ = 2 laps
  • Gravel Fondo - Short Course = 2 laps, Long Course = 3 laps

*Detailed route maps will be available closer to the event date.

What is the Team Relay?

One after another members from each team of 4 must complete one lap of the 18.1km course, totalling 72.4k in total. After completing the lap, the rider then passes the ‘baton’ to the next rider in their team within the transition zone until all 4 laps have been completed.

Race classifications include Men, Women, Mixed (at least one rider of either gender), U19 Men and U19 Women.

*Both the Time Trial and Team Relay has a fully produced start area with ramp, sound and lighting, professional commentary and a countdown clock.
