Marathon & Half Marathon in Coniston

Starting and finishing at Coniston Hall Landing Point, on the shores of Coniston Water (LA21 8AS), the Lakeland Trails Marathon takes in a complete circuit of Coniston Water along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways. Taking in the idyllic beauty spot of Tarn Hows, and the elevated Beacon Tarn, the whole course gives panoramic views of Lake Coniston and the surrounding peaks of the Old Man, Swirl How, Wetherlam and Dow Crags. Described by Runners' World magazine as 'the most scenic trail Marathon in Britain' this event is quickly becoming a classic European trail marathon.

For those wanting a shorter option, the Lakeland Trails Half Marathon utilises the first 17km section of the marathon course as far as Tarn Hows, before heading back to Coniston. The Lakeland Trails Mini Marathon 10K utilises the beautiful Torver Trail route from 2014, starting and finishing from Land's Point in Coniston.

A carnival atmosphere is guaranteed for both spectators and competitors, with live music, race commentary, food and drink all available at the start and finish. So, whether you're new to trail running, an experienced athlete, or simply looking for an unforgettable day out in the Lake District, a family-friendly, festival atmosphere and some amazing trail running awaits you!

  • Did the Marathon Race in 2019

This was my first Marathon and certainly not an easy option but the breathtaking scenery and wide variety of terrain to cover kept me distracted from the tiredness in my legs. The uphill sections were frequent but never so long that they weren't manageable (with a fair bit of hiking). The course took us through some incredible places, the loop around Tarn Hows was gorgeous and I loved running through misty woodland when the cloud dropped down to meet us. I was surprised at how technical the terrain became towards the end of the run, some very tricky trails but adding to the overall experience. I would definitely do this event again but I just need a bit of a rest first.
