Route description

Maverick Race presents three routes which will push you to your limits, but are attainable for all levels of trail runners.

The course will track through the Hollycombe Forest, with its towering trees either side of you, before breaking out into the open a climbing the surrounding hills. Although these will test you, it will all be worth it once at the top where runners can take in the truly spectacular views of area.

Only a stones through away from London, this is a fantastic opportunity to escape the city and experience how great the British outdoors truly is.

This was an interesting and challenging route. The event was well supported by catering and the free chilled beer at the end was marvellous.

Staff always super helpful and flexible, course could not be more beautiful. Ups and downs always a killer but the feeling at the end is the best. I started doing trains with Maverick 18 months ago, and have since done 3. I plan on doing as many as I can.

Well, I run a LOT of tough races. Mountain ultras etc but this was the hardest mile for mile race I’ve done to date! I was thoroughly spent at the finish. The mud was epic, you were either climbing, or running through calf deep mud! Hard work! I’ve done a few maverick events, cracking atmosphere, great routesaand I plan on running more. Get involved!

Lovely friendly atmosphere for my first trail run. Even getting lost, due to a disgruntled local removing signs, was handled well by the organisers. We knew how to contact them and they checked we were OK after the event. Would gladly do another event with Maverick.

Maverick race are my favourite trail series event company, I’ve run at their events for the last few years now and everything ticks the right boxes hard routes, stunning scenery, great nutrition stops and the race directors are some of the friendliest I’ve ever met.

As always Maverick races put on a great event with a challenging route, many thanks to the excellent marshalls, they were epic as always.

Maverick races are the best! Always great locations, really well organised with a thoroughly decent crowd. Everyone is very supportive and kind to trail running beginners. I’ve learned a lot from these events, and their sponsor inov-8 who kindly loaned us some trail shoes on our first race and taught us the importance of decent gear! The cakes and pizza on sale at every events are amazing, and if that’s not enough to push you to the finish line, the ice cold beer is! We would do these every weekend if we could but for now, we eagerly await new routes going on sale!

Lovely route through the woods with some challenging hill thrown in. A great atmosphere at the finish with a nice cold beer and chatting to people who enjoy running. This event made me do another 2 Maverick events and another in mind.

Always well organised, excellent atmosphere, friendly safe environment enjoyable event with like minded athletes, maverick staff visible and welcoming . An all round excellent event and series that gets you out and about into interesting beautiful countryside whilst completing challenging routes whatever the distance. The events are excellent value for money. The limited race entry also adds to the friendlyness of all events

Plenty of free parking and a relaxed, friendly pre race feel to the event. Amazing, supportive crew/marshals were always ready to give encouragement and praise. Brilliant route with lovely views and a couple of brutal climbs, especially near the finish! A decent bottle opening medal with good quality T-shirt’s which are individual to the event. All topped off with free beer and coffee at the end. What’s not to love?

As always maverick Hampshire was a great event, good organised car parking, easy registration, Good toilet facilities as well . I think these events are a good size with enough people at the start and finish to create an atmosphere but never crowded.. Also the route was very varied. The choice of distances is great because you can take part as a couple or group with different fitness levels or change distance on the day if you need to....can't recommend maverick enough..(so much more than a running event)

The race was well organised as always with Mavericks. The course were breautiful, challanging, but enjoyable. I had a great time running this race. Hydratatoin stations allways well stocked and the route is well signposted/marshalled. The event village had a great atmosphere too. Parking was easy too.

Excellent race again this year. I love what Maverick are doing, establishing a cool, relevant trail running community that is similar to what we see in the states but with a distinctly British feel.Conditions were tough going; super muddy in places but varied in terms of type of trail. The course was well marshalled and a huge cup of red bull was a nice surprise at half way. This isn't one for pb's if you are usually middle of the pack. A few kissing gates and Stiles caused a bottle neck of runners early on, although these made for a welcome break after going out too fast. With a few miles to go the route entered a field which had a gentle slope into some woods. The field was thick mud and a massive energy sapper! The final climb was by far the most difficult, winding upwards at a really steep gradient through woodland. It seemed to go on forever! Once at the top, however, the site of steam engine museum and the finish line were well worth it. Lots of smiles at the finish line from volunteers and some tasty goodies to go with my medal. Overall, a very cool race.Would have love to have been captured by their on course photographer but there seemed to be lots of pictures of the same people. A shame but not disastrous. Good job Maverick, see you soon.

Maverick Race returned to Hollycombe, Liphook yesterday to hold their Inov-8 Original Hampshire race. With three route options, short 7k, middle 13k and long 22k. As with all Maverick events the atmosphere is fantastic, very welcoming and friendly a real buzz around with fellow racers chatting and preparing themselves for the race. The routes were all challenging with mix of terrain and plenty of mud, oh and hills lots of them, nothing like finishing a long run with a 1k hill climb and a 'sprint' over the finish line! The organisers go to great lengths to make these races really enjoyable so it is a real shame that every now and then the route signs get tampered with sending runners in the wrong direction which is very frustrating but seemingly there is little they can do, the signage is double checked just before the race. Crossing the finish line you receive a medal, iced coffee, energy bar and a beer, yes a beer and why not. The post race experience is fantastic everyone on such a high, posing for photos, tucking into the variety of food laid on and of course checking their watches to see their times. Results are available quickly and photographs start coming in line within a couple of days; the photography is very good and free to download. Personally I have run with Maverick many times and they have all been excellent and have always left on such a high, I would recommend them to all levels of runners. Will Baigent

All of the info pre-race was great, so I was expecting an equally high level of organisation on the day. Unfortunately it wasn't quite the case. Parking was pretty poorly planned - there were no pavers used so the route into the field got very slippery very quickly. The method for number collection was great, really quick and streamlined, probably the best registration method of any race I've done so far. Organisation at the start line was poor - just a huge jumble of people lumped together to set off at the same time which caused a pretty intense bottleneck quite early on. I also wasn't particularly pleased to hear the announcer say that you could change your route to the longer one if you felt like it - considering that the tickets for the longer routes cost more. I found the directions for my route were pretty well laid out, but the same can't be said for the short route. In the last 2km I encountered a large group who had all become lost on the short distance and wound up accidentally doing much more than they had prepared themselves for. As for the route itself, the latter 2/3rds were better than the first section. The bottleneck I mentioned earlier didn't ease up until pretty much around the 3km mark, which made it impossible to get into a decent rhythm. Otherwise, it was a good challenging run - the recent weather added to that making a lot of the route very boggy, but that's just a likely & unfortunate side effect of running at this time of year. The atmosphere all round was great, just a shame about the organisation.
