About
The Oxfordshire Triathlon Series consists of 3 races spread across the summer, from June to September. For a region with numerous triathlon clubs, keen individual athletes and beautiful surroundings, Oxfordshire was in need of its own open-water swim triathlon series. Apart from the wonderful Blenheim Triathlon which happens early in the year, we felt a need to provide more racing opportunities in this region.By offering 3 races it means that athletes can race 2 or 3 over the course of the year and measure their progression, or those with busy schedules should be able to attend perhaps 1 or 2, therefore not missing out on the fun!

Route information
Swim
The swim will take place in the 'East lake' of the Queensford Water Park.
The swim will start at 8.30am sharp. The 1km swim will consist of 2 x 500m laps (see diagram right)
The start will be a deep water start, a short distance from the shoreline to give those less confident the option to start from a shallower, more suitable depth of water should they desire.
There is an ideal, naturally sloping beach into the lake, as well as a concrete slipway for the swim exit. There is a short 50m run from the swim exit to transition.
Bike
The bike course consists of 2 x 17km laps (anti-clockwise)
The route will be clearly signposted for the entire lap. The lap has been chosen for its great mixture of terrain, so there is something for everyone!
The first 6.5km is flat, straight and fast! This is followed by a 6km section that has the majority of the course elevation changes (420ft total ascent over the 2 laps). The final 4.5km of the lap is flat but technical, with twists and turns.
The lap is ideal for either a Tri bike or road bike, whichever you prefer. The road surface is very good over the entire lap, and the roads will be relatively quiet.
Run
The run will consist of 2 x 3.75km laps around the lakes surrounding bank and paths, clearly signed for the entire route.
Flat and firm underfoot, it will stand up to all weather and has a total elevation gain of only 30ft over the full 7.5km. There will be a water station on the run route at the start and the turn around point at the end of the first lap.

FAQs
is this event suitable for me?
YES! The team or organisers have been very selective in the course distances and design to ensure it is suitable for all. The 'vibe' for the event is to encourage all abilities to have a go. I have never competed in an open water swim before,

will I be OK?
The swim loop will consist of 2 laps of 500m each. This was a deliberate decision to ensure that all swimmers are always within a reasonable proximity to the safety crew at all times. At the start of the swim you will be able to place yourself wherever you feel comfortable to ensure a stress free swim start, be it starting from the shore line, or in deeper water. You will be able to swim at the venue prior to all races as it is open to swimmers 4 days a week, so lots of time to practice beforehand if confidence is an issue.

What temperature will the water be?
The lake itself is an old mature gravel pit which means clean, clear water which warms up quickly from late April. Historical data from many years swimming at the lake shows that the temperature will be somewhere between 16-24 degrees for all races. All races will be wetsuit legal.

How will we know our finishing time and position?
We will be teaming up with Eventrex, a local company that specialises in the electronic chip timing of duathlons and triathlons. We have worked with them for several years on previous events, and we know they always do a fantastic job. Results will be available on the day via a big screen and split to show your finish position via age categories and overall.

Will there be feed stations on course?
Due to the nature of the course design, we will ensure there is a feed station with water at swim exit, bike exit and on the run course. There will be no feed stations on the bike lap as most athletes should be fine for 35km by carrying their own fluids/nutrition. This decision was made to reduce our environmental impact due to waste being left on the bike course.
