Route description
Route description

A unique part of this event is the ability to make it your own. With nothing but a 6 hour time limit on the course, runners are able to decide just how many loops they wish to complete on the day. Those wishing to cover a marathon will need to complete just over 8 laps, while the half marathon will be 4 laps.

The course explores many parts of Rosliston Forestry Centre that are normally untouched, even by regular visitors. There is a small section of around 100m on a concrete path but the rest is either on crushed stone path, untouched forest pathways or very muddy ones.

Each lap has around 170ft of elevation – it wouldn't be described as hilly but each lap ends with a steep climb!

Yesterday I took part in my first Big Bear event. I am 55 years old and only started running at Easter, completing the Couch to 5k and then moving on to Park Runs at Rosliston. On my first run I met a lovely group of ladies who quickly became friends and they have encouraged me every step of the way, including entering the Pine Challenge! I was a bit concerned as I thought the entrants would be mostly 'hard core' runners - how wrong could I be? Mixed ages and abilities but also some very fit and fast runners, all with their own goals for the day, but everyone very supportive of each other. Lovely positive atmosphere. The event was very well run and the organisers were helpful, friendly and encouraging - nothing was too much trouble. Food and drink was plentiful. The course was very muddy owing to days and days of rain (and got muddier as the day progressed!), but we were kept well informed of the terrain in the days, weeks before the event, which meant we well prepared and dressed appropriately.
As for me, I exceeded my expectations of myself and returned home very happy, aching, buzzing and looking forward to my next Challenge!

I attended my first Big Bear event yesterday - the Pine Challenge at Rosliston. I am 55, and only started running this Easter by completing the Couch to 5k, then moving on to doing regular Park Runs at Rosliston. I met a lovely group of ladies who quickly became friends and have encouraged me every step of the way, including joining them on the Pine Challenge. I must admit I was a bit unsure, and thought the entrants would be mostly 'hard core' runners - how wrong could I be? There was broad range of ages and abilities, all with their own personal goals for the day. There were some extremely fit and fast partipants but all very friendly and encouraging. Lovely positive atmosphere.
The event was well run and the organisers were helpful and friendly - nothing was too much trouble. Food and drink was plentiful. The course was very muddy owing to days and days of rain (and got muddier as the day progressed) but we were kept well informed prior to the event of the terrian, so were dressed appropriate on the day. Very murky to begin with then the sun came out (yeh!) which added to the enjoyment of the day.
As for me, I ran further than I expected and went home happy, buzzing and looking forward to my next challenge!

I had a fabulous day at the Pine Challenge. There was a group of 10 of us of very different abilities but all enthusiastic! The lap system was great, not only for the new snacks to look forward to at the end of each one, but to catch up with other members of our group to see how everyone was doing. The organisation was spot on and the atmosphere was really supportive. I hope to do another Big Bear event very soon and hopefully do a marathon distance next time. Great flapjacks at the finish too. Thanks Big Bear!

This was my first Big Bear Event, and my first try at running a half marathon. It was a fantastic day. Pre-event information was excellent. The welcome was warm and the day was very well organised.
Great choice of food, including healthy options.
The Big Bear staff and volunteers were friendly and helpful.
What I loved best about the day was the friendliness and camaraderie between those taking part. Some runners were running awesome distances, but they were all friendly and encouraging, with a wave or smile or a ‘well done.’
I would (and now have) thoroughly recommend a Big Bear Event.
Thank you to Paul and all of his staff and volunteers. A day to remember.

This was my first attempt at a 6 hours event and the supportive relaxed atmosphere made it an enjoyable one. The course provided variety of terrain and scenery without being very too technical. The support from the organisers, volunteers and other participants was great and the aid station was a welcome sight at the end of the lap. Looking forward to taking up another Big Bear event soon.

Another amazing run this time round the beautiful Rosliston forest and in the sunshine. The supporters, Marshall’s and other runners were all so friendly as ever. The check point food had a massive choice and it’s always great when you can pre request what you fancy. Big Bear Events are definitely the most inclusive and friendliest events I have ever done. Highly recommend them to anyone from first timers to regular, crazy ultra runners alike. See you at the next one in November

Frequently asked questions
FAQ
What is the Pine Challenge?
The Pine Challenge is a 6h event run along a 3.3 mile off-road loop. You decide how long you want to go for, how far you want to run, and how fast.
FAQ
Is the Pine Challenge cupless?
Yes. It's obviously good for the environment to reduce plastic use and general waste. You won't break a world record having to stop to fill a bottle of water or carry a hydration pack, but over a marathon distance it would probably add less than a minute to your time. There will be water and drinks available, but no cups. You can buy a foldable cup from the organiser on the day.
FAQ
Is there an age cut off for Pine Challenge?
Yes, entrants must be at least 17 years of age to enter the event.
FAQ
Will there be free parking at the Pine Challenge?
No, but parking will be available for £3. All money from parking will go straight to country parks.
FAQ
Can I enter the Pine Challenge on the day?
No, unfortunately no entries will be allowed on the day.
