Event summary

How far is the race? You decide! The 2.8-mile off-road loop means your race can be just under 5k or even over 50k and anywhere in between. You decide how many laps you're going to do on the day within the 6-hour time limit. If you're looking to cover a marathon distance, you'll need to complete 10 laps (28 miles) and a half marathon will be 5 laps (14 miles).

Route description

The course is mainly on a crushed stone pathway, with some sections on grass pathways. There is one notable climb to the top of the Forest Park, with a corresponding notable downhill! The rest of the course is relatively flat, however, allowing for some spectacular views across the lakes. There is even a section through the pine forest.

Each lap has around 170ft of elevation, making the marathon distance 1700ft of elevation.

I don't know about'what hills'. One in particular was definitely a hill, could have been a mountain. Even so, the friendliness and the pit stops. made up for all the pain. Here's to the next one

The Big Bear Events Neve fail to disappoint & the Poplar Challenge was no different. It was and interesting course, undulating, amazing scenery & enough cross over points that you saw plenty of other participants. The volunteers were second to none and the feed station top notch!

This was my first Big Bear event and I really enjoyed the challenging course and the friendly atmosphere created by the organises and those taking. I would certainly recommend this event and wish I could do more but limited by work commitments.

This was my first big bear event. There was such a friendly and warm vibe given by those taking part. I run at sense valley all the time so it was so lovely to do an event there ( and new ideas to navigate round the park). I will definitely be looking into taking part in another 6 hr event organised by big bear.

Another great race from a fantastic organiser. The course was tough with two very steep hills each lap and some tricky muddy sections, but as always a great atmosphere and an aid station worth running the course for.

Great event really well organised with helpful and friendly volunteers. Really enjoyed the format with choice of distance from 5k to ultra. Good provision of drinks and food available. Definitely be back next year.

My 2nd race with Big Bear Events and just as well-organised as the first. The other competitors were friendly and supportive and the volunteer crew the same. Some big hills on this course so I would say it was fairly challenging. All in all a good day.

Had a fab time running around in the mud (though my legs may have had a different opinion). Super friendly organisers/volunteers, lots of encouragement on the way round, loved the snack table and drinks on tap. It was a tad lonely at times, especially towards the end when some people had turned in for the day, you could go for ages without seeing another runner.

6 hours + 1 lap is always a bit different to doing a normal race, but having all the facilities to sort yourself (easy access to bags, cups) means you can get on and do your thing without hassle. The feed station was excellent! Sweets, sausage, cheese and the Nutella in wraps was amazing. Big thanks to the tent crew but also marshals out on the course who was always encouraging and positive. Beer at the end as well!

My first big bear event, not knowing what to expect my friend and I turned up on a very chilly and muddy morning with no expectations about the event or our running distance.
Great venue, wonderful support, friendly staff and volunteers we had a thoroughly enjoyable day and will def be back for another mid week race thank you Big Bear Events 😁

My 3rd big bear event, such a great format, the team really look after you. Loads of food provided and nothing is too much trouble.
To me the events are a great way to run longer distances without the pressure. The courses are always challenging, but the three I’ve done have all been very scenic. A great day out 👏👏👏👏

Really well organised, all staff/marshals were very friendly. They had a great selection of food and drink at the rest point. The goodies at the finish were great. I’m definitely doing another Big Bear event next year 👍

Good first big bear event for me. Well organised by Paul and family, who all did a very good job of looking after things and keeping it professional, despite only a small field of runners on the day. Good location, great snack station, efficient results, nice medal, and loved the relabled Nobbys beer! Will be back for more events, but will still something with a simpler course next time.

Really enjoyed the format. The laps were long enough that the course didn’t become too familiar. The table for refreshments was a great idea, also nice being able to strip layers off and leave them behind in this cold weather. If I hadn’t been in a rush the format would definitely have encouraged me to run slightly further than I would otherwise.
